Effect of Fiber Dispersion on Mechanical Strength of SiCf/SiC Composites (강화 섬유의 분산도가 SiCf/SiC 복합소재의 기계적 강도에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper investigates the impact of fiber dispersion on the internal structure and mechanical strength of SiCf/SiC composites manufactured using spread SiC fibers. The fiber volume ratio of the specimen to which spread SiC fiber was applied decreased by 9%p compared to the non-spread specimen, and the resin slurry impregnated between the fibers more smoothly, resulting in minimal matrix porosity. In order to compare the fiber dispersion of each specimen, a method was proposed to quantify and evaluate the separation distance between fibers in composite materials. The results showed that the distance between fibers in the spread specimen increased by 2.23 ㎛ compared to the non-spread specimen, with a significant 42.6% increase in the distance between fiber surfaces. Furthermore, the 3pt bending test demonstrated a 49.3% higher flexural strength in the spread specimen, accompanied by a more uniform deviation in test data. These findings highlight the significant influence of SiC fiber dispersion on achieving uniform densification of the SiCf/SiC matrix and increasing mechanical strength.

  • Liquid silicon infiltration, which is one of the methods of producing fiber reinforced ceramic composites, has several advantages such as low fabrication cost and good shape formability. In order to confirm LSI process feasibility of SiC fiber, $SiC_f/SiC$ composites were fabricated using three types of SiC fibers (Tyranno SA, LoxM, Tyranno S) which have different crystallinity and oxygen content. Composites that were fabricated with LSI process were well densified by less than 2% of porosity, but showed an obvious difference in 3-point bending strength according to crystallinity and oxygen content. When composites in LSI process was exposed to a high temperature, crystallization and micro structural changes were occurred in amorphous SiOC phase in SiC fiber. Fiber shrinkage also observed during LSI process that caused from reaction in fiber and between fiber and matrix. These were confirmed with changes of process temperature by SEM, XRD and TEM analysis.

Degradation analysis of SiC fiber at elevated temperature for dust filtering applications (분진필터링 적용을 위한 SiC 섬유의 고온 열화분석)

  • SiC fiber can be used up to $1800^{\circ}C$ in both inert and air atmosphere without any problems such as melting and oxidation. SiC fibers can be applied to dust filtering processes as a bag filter at a high temperature above $700^{\circ}C$, which is far beyond the temperature range of currently available industrial bag filter. However the studies for the degradation of SiC fibers were still lacked in the harsh environment of steel industries and thermoelectric power plants. In this study, SiC fibers were reacted with steel dust and thermal power plant dust at a high temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ or higher, and the degraded shape of the fiber surface was observed by SEM. Also the degree of oxygen diffusion on the surface and inside of SiC fiber was analyzed by EDS.

Fabrication and resistance heating properties of flexible SiC fiber rope as heating elements (유연한 탄화규소 섬유 로프 발열체의 제조와 저항 발열 특성)

  • Silicon carbide (SiC) fibers mainly fabricated from polycarbosilane, a ceramic precursor, are applied as reinforcing materials for ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) because of their high temperature oxidation resistance, tensile strength, and light weight. In this study, continuous SiC fibers used to fabricate rope-type flexible heating elements capable of generating high-temperature heat (> 650℃). For high-efficiency heating elements, the resistance of SiC fiber rope was measured by 2-point probe method according to the cross-sectional area and length. In addition, the fabrication conditions of rope-type SiC fiber heating elements were optimized by controlling the oxygen impurities and the size of crystal grains present in the amorphous SiC fiber. As a result, the SiC fiber heating element having a resistance range of about 100~200 Ω exhibited an excellent power consumption efficiency of 1.5 times compared to that of the carbon fiber heating element.

Characteristics of Elastic Wave Generated by Wear and Friction of SiCf/SiC Composites (SiCf/SiC 복합재의 마모 및 마찰에 의해 발생된 탄성파 특성)

  • The wear characteristics of $SiC_f$/SiC composites were evaluated according to the alignment direction of the fibers, and the elastic wave-generated friction was detected and analyzed in wearing. The friction coefficient and wear loss were similar in the longitudinal and the transverse direction of the fibers. However, these values were lower in the vertical direction of the fibers because of the brittle nature of the fiber. The friction coefficient and the wear loss were directly proportional to each other. The dominant frequencies were 58.6 kHz for monolithic SiC and 117.2 and 136.7 kHz for $SiC_f$/SiC composites, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop silicon carbide fiber showing an excellent mechanical properties under highly oxidative conditions at high temperature. Polycarbosilane(PCS) as a preceramic precursor was used for making the SiC fiber. PCS fiber was taken by melt spinning method followed by melting the PCS at $300{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ in N2 gas. The Curing of PCS fiber was carried out in air oxygen chamber, prior to high temperature pyrolysis. Degree of cure was calculated by characteristic peak's ratio of Si-H to $Si-CH_3$ in FT-IR spectra before and after curing of PCS fiber. The properties of SiC fiber was affected greatly by the degree of cure. The SiC fiber produced by controlling fiber tension during heat treatment showed good properties. The SiC fiber exposed to $1000^{\circ}C$ at air from 1 min. up to maximum 50 hrs showed around 60% reduction in tensile strength. We found that large amount of carbon content on the fiber surface after long-term exposure has resulted in lower tensile strength.

  • SiC materials have been extensively studied for high temperature components in advanced energy conversion system and advanced gas turbine. However, the brittle characteristics of SiC such as law fracture toughness and law strain-to fracture impose a severe limitation on the practical applications of SiC materials. SiC/SiC composites can be considered as a promising candidate in various structural materials, because of their good fracture toughness. In this composite system, the direction of SiC fiber will give an effect to the mechanical properties. It is therefore important to control a properdirection of SiC fiber for the fabrication of high performance SiC/SiC composites. In this study, unidirection and two dimension woven structures of SiC/SiC composites were prepared starting from Tyranno SA fiber. SiC matrix was obtained by nano-powder infiltration and transient eutectoid (NITE) process. Effect of microstructure and density on the sintering temperature in NITE-SiC/SiC composites are described and discussed with the fiber direction of unidirection and two dimension woven structures.

A Study on the Possibility of Using Fire-Retardant Working Cloth Made from Silicon Carbide (SiC) Composite Spun Yarns (Silicon Carbide (SiC) 복합방적사로부터 제조된 원단의 방화복 활용 가능성에 관한 연구)

  • The mechanical properties of a woven fabric made of SiC (silicon carbide) fibers were determined in this study using the KES-FB system. The woven fabric is used in high heat settings above 1500℃. Composite spun yarns were used to create SiC fibers. By analyzing the wearing properties, we studied the prospect of using the textiles as fire-retardant work clothes. Mechanical properties determine the wearing attributes. Therefore, the tensile linearity (LT), tensile resilience (RT), and shear stiffness (G) values of the fabric varied according to the yarn type (filament or spun yarn). The thickness, weight per square meter, and density of the fabric were found to have an effect on the shear hysteresis (2HG) and compression resilience (RC) values. In terms of wearable clothing qualities, the fabric qualities of the SiC composite yarn demonstrated the highest ratio of compressive energy to thickness (WC/T), which indicates bulkiness. The fabric manufactured from SiC composite yarns passed the KFI criteria for carbonation length and cumulative flame time in the flame-retardant test. Therefore, we discovered that the material can be used as a fire-resistant work cloth.

Development of Continuous SiC Fiber Reinforced Magnesium Composites Using Liquid Pressing Process (액상가압성형 공정을 이용한 SiC 연속섬유 강화 마그네슘 복합재료 개발)

  • In this study, the possibility of manufacturing a magnesium (Mg) composites reinforced with continuous silicon carbide (SiC) fibers was examined using a liquid pressing process. We fabricated uniformly dispersed SiC fiberAZ91 composites using a liquid phase pressing process. Furthermore, the precipitates were controlled through heat treatment. As a continuous Mg2Si phase was formed at the interface between the SiC fiber and the AZ91 matrix alloy, the interfacial bonding strength was improved. The tensile strength at room temperature of the prepared composite was 479 MPa, showing excellent mechanical properties.

Synthesis of aluminum contained polycarbosilane and preparation of Si-Al-C-O nanocomposite fiber (Aluminum이 첨가된 polycarbosilane 합성 및 Si-Al-C-O 나노복합섬유 제조)

  • SiC 섬유의 고온강도를 향상시키기 위한 소결조제로 boron, aluminum 등을 사용할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 폴리카보실란에 aluminum precursor를 첨가한 후 중합반응을 거쳐 Al-contained polycarbosilane을 합성하였다. 합성된 Al-contained polycarbosilane을 용융방사하여 섬유화 하고 열분해 공정을 통해 Si-Al-C-O 나노복합 섬유를 제조하였다. 먼저 aluminum butoxide와 polycarbosilane(commercial)을 200m1 xylene에 용해시켜 14$0^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 동안 reflux하였다. evaporator를 이용하여 xylene를 제거한 후 autoclave에서 25$0^{\circ}C$/30$0^{\circ}C$ 중합과정을 통해 가교결합 시켰다 이와 같이 합성된 시료는 ICP분석을 통해 aluminum 함량을 확인하였고 FT-IR(Fig.1) 및 GPC분석(Fig.2)으로부터 화학구조 및 분자량변화를 확인하였다. aluminum 첨가량이 증가함에 따라 Si-H/Si-$CH_3$의 결합크기의 비가 감소하였으며 이로부터 aluminum butoxide와 polycarbosilane의 가교결합이 이루어진 것으로 보이며 중합 후 분자량의 증가 또한 가교결합에 의한 결과로 사료된다 열무게감량(TGA) 측정 결과는 40$0^{\circ}C$부터 유기리간드의 분해가 일어나며 80$0^{\circ}C$이상에서 세라믹화 과정이 완료되었음을 알 수 있었다 또한 aluminum 첨가량이 증가함에 따라 세라믹 수율도 증가하였음을 확인하였다. 합성된 aluminum-contained polycarbosilane은 20$0^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 동안 불융화과정을 거쳐 환원 및 진공 분위기에서 고온 열처리하였으며 이로부터 얻어진 시료에 대해 XRD분석을 수행하였다. SEM과 TEM을 이용하여 미세구조를 관찰하였다.
