Recently, development of Al-based alloys for high mechanical performance has been an important issue in automotive industry. The present study focused on the design of a high strength Al-based alloy for rheo-diecasting. The research was based on thermodynamic calculation and experimentals to optimize the alloy compositions. Two important considerations were carried out: i) to obtain uniform slurry with fine and globular microstructures for rheo-diecasting, ii) to be strengthend by T6 heat treatment. In order to evaluate the effect of Si content on the slurry microstructure and castability, thermodynamic calculation and fluidity test were carried out. The effects of various alloying components, such as Mg, Cu and Zn, on age hardenability were also investigated. The mechanical properties of the rheo-diecasting products using the newly developed alloy are 324MPa in tensile strength, 289MPa in yield strength, and 11.2% in elongation after T6 heat treatment.
The tensile strength and water resistance of ADC12 alloy matrix composites reinforced with saffil/ceraklwool and saffil/Si particle prepared by squeeze casting have been investigated in room temperature and $250^{\circ}C$. Adhesive and scuffing wear phenomena was studied when load was changed to 10~40N and wear velocity was 2.0m/s at room temperature and $250^{\circ}C$. Generally, the morphology of tensile fractured surface revealed dimple pattern which implies ductile fracture of the composites. However, cleavage fracture was also observed in case of ADC12 alloy based saffil/Si particle composite. The maximum tensile strength of 320MPa was obtained in ADC12 alloy based composites reinforced by saffil/cerakwool(5:5) preformed fibers. In the results of dry wear test, it was observed that scuffing was occurred at 40N in room temperature and 30N for $250^{\circ}C$.
Ni-based heat resisting alloys are commonly used for high temperature applications such as in aircraft engines and gas turbines. In this work, the machinability of Nimonic 263 alloy is investigated with respect to optimum tool type and cutting conditions for both continuous and discontinuous machining as well as weld region. Among the five types of tools tested, K25 tool experienced the least of damage in machining the weld region. Furthermore, despite their superior high temperature hardness, Si-Al-O-N and CBN tools peformed poorly in machining Nimonic 263.

The paper presents the possibilities of obtaining new composite materials based on sintered porous ceramics with particles and fibre of $Al_2O_3$ infiltrated by aluminum alloy. The EN AC - AlSi12 alloy features the matrix material, whereas the RF50AX-301 preform, of Saffil Automotive, was used as the reinforcement. Examinations of ceramics preforms permeability were made. Metallographic examination of composite materials made on light microscope and in scanning electron microscope show that aluminum alloys fill micropores in the matrix. New composite materials show twice higher value of hardness in comparison with matrix. Results indicate that it is possible to infiltrate porous ceramic with liquid aluminum alloy to obtain new composite materials were advantageous properties of each component are connected.
In this study, we investigated the glass-forming ability (GFA) and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of $Gd_{55}Co_{20}Al_{23}Si_2$ bulk glassy alloy. It is found that the addition of 2 at% Si is effective for extension of the supercooled liquid region (${\Delta}T_x$), the ${\Delta}T_x$ is 55 K for the $Gd_{55}Co_{20}Al_{25}$ glassy alloy, and increases to 79 K for the $Gd_{55}Co_{20}Al_{23}Si_2$ alloy. As a result, $Gd_{55}Co_{20}Al_{23}Si_2$ glassy alloys with diameters up to 5 mm were successfully synthesized. The alloys also exhibit large MCE, i.e., the magnetic entropy change (${\Delta}S_m$) of 8.9 J $kg^{-1}\;K^{-1}$, the full width at half maximum of the ${\Delta}S_m$ (${\delta}T_{FWHM}$) of 87 K, and the refrigerant capacity (RC) of 774 J $kg^{-1}$.
PAS(Plasma Activated Sintering) process was tried to apply for the fabrication of BMG(Bulk Metallic Glasses) of $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_5}\;and\;Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_3Sn_2$ from the as-atomized amorphous powder. Compressive strength for the BMG(bulk Metallic Glasses) of $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_5$ were lower than those of BMG rods produced by warm extrusion ,or copper mold casting method. Microstructural examination by optical microcope, SEM ana EDS showed that oxidation had occurred during PASintering. In order to prevent the powder from the oxidation during PASintering, Ni coating for $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_5$ amorphous powder by electroless-plating method was performed. Microstructural examination for Ni coated layers after PASintering indicated that the Ni coating had been so effective to prevent powder from oxidation during PASintering. Sintering behaviors of $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_3Sn_2$ represent the same as those of $Ni_{57}Zr_{20}Ti_{18}Si_5$.
Fe-9.8Si-6.0Al mother alloy was manufactured using by Fe-3.5Si recycled scrap and Si powder. And then, soft magnetic alloy powder of $D_{50}$ size and sphere type were prepared by gas atomization process. To obtain the soft magnetic powder of a high aspect ratio, in the first, we conducted the ball milling process for 8 hours. And heat treatment was performed under $650^{\circ}C$, 2 hours and $N_2$ atmosphere condition for reducing the residual stress of the powder. Based on these process, we made around $50{\mu}m$ diameter Fe-9.8Si-6.0Al powder, which morphology and shape was a similar to the commercial Fe-Si-Al powder. Finally, the soft magnetic sheets were prepared by tape casting process using by those powders. The permeability of the tape casting sheet was measured, and we confirmed the possibility of reusing to the soft magnetic materials of Fe-Si electric sheet scrap.
Fe-Mn-Si-Ni-Cr-TiC alloys have a shape memory property, recovering initial shape by heating. With an aim to improve a durability and stability of building and infrastructure, this Fe-based shape memory alloy (FSMA) can be employed to reinforce concrete structure with creation of compressive residual stress. In this work, corrosion resistance of FSMA was compared with general rebar and S400 carbon steel to evaluate the stability in concrete environment. Potentiodynamic polarization test in de-ionized water, tap-water and 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution with variations of pH was used to compare the corrosion resistance. FSMA shows better corrosion resistance than rebar and S400 in tested solutions. However, Cl-containing solution is critical to significantly reduce the corrosion resistance of FSMA. Therefore, though FSMA can be a promising candidate to replace the rebar and S400 for the reinforcement of concrete structure, serious cautions are required in marine environments.
Aluminum alloys, known for their high strength-to-weight ratios and impressive electrical and thermal conductivities, are extensively used in numerous engineering sectors, such as aerospace, automotive, and construction. Recently, significant efforts have been made to develop novel aluminum alloys specifically tailored for additive manufacturing. These new alloys aim to provide an optimal balance between mechanical properties and thermal/electrical conductivities. In this study, nine combinatorial samples with various alloy compositions were fabricated using direct energy deposition (DED) additive manufacturing by adjusting the feeding speeds of Al6061 alloy and Al-12Si alloy powders. The effects of the alloying elements on the microstructure, electrical conductivity, and hardness were investigated. Generally, as the Si and Cu contents decreased, electrical conductivity increased and hardness decreased, exhibiting trade-off characteristics. However, electrical conductivity and hardness showed an optimal combination when the Si content was adjusted to below 4.5 wt%, which can sufficiently suppress the grain boundary segregation of the α-Si precipitates, and the Cu content was controlled to induce the formation of Al2Cu precipitates.
Car industry has required light-weight steels, but still with strong mechanical strength. To meet this requirement, a variety of researches on Fe-Al alloys have been performed. As Al is being added in a disordered manner, alloys become more ductile and show higher yield stress. At a certain concentration of Al, however, the Fe-Al alloy system falls in a second phase whose mechanical strength is worsened. To understand the microscopic role of Al, we investigate the stability and the elastic properties of various Fe-Al alloys using ab initio density functional theory. At agiven Al concentration, the equilibrium geometry is obtained among several disordered Fe-Al alloy structures by performing the geometry relaxation. The formation energies and elastic properties such as bulk moduli of the equilibrium structures are also computed as a function of Al concentration. We also investigate the effects of different elements such as Si and Mn. Fe-Si alloy systems exhibit unusual mechanical behaviors requiring further investigation to understand their physical origin. Especially, the microscopic role of Mn is investigated to find its physical origin of preventing the Fe-Al alloy system from forming an unfavorable second phase. The effect of manganese on mechanical properties of Fe-based alloys is also explored.
