  • SiC nanoparticles were used to increase flexural properties of polymer matrix. This study was to manufacture huge concentration SiC nanoparticle/epoxy composites and to evaluate the dispersion. During mixing SiC nanoparticle and epoxy, 20 wt% SiC nanoparticle in total composites was used with both stirrer and sonication equipment together. Mixing speed and dispersion were improved with the method by using both stirrer and sonication equipment at the same time via mechanical test and FE-SEM. Based on the results, modeling of SiC nanoparticle dispersion could be established. Ultimately, unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced composites was manufactured using 20 wt% SiC nanoparticle/epoxy. Mechanical property of CFRP using dual stirrer and sonication mixing method was better than composites by single sonication mixing method.

  • Effects of $SiO_x$ or C shells on electrochemical properties of Si nanoparticles were investigated. $SiO_x$ shells with thickness of 10~15 nm were formed on homogeneously crystalline Si nanoparticles. Incase of Si-C nanoparticles, there were 30~40 layers of C with a number of defects. Li-ion batteries were fabricated with the above-mentioned nanoparticles, and their electrochemical properties were measured. Pristine Si shows a high IRC (initial reversible capacity) of 2,517 mAh/g and ICE (initial columbic efficiency) of 87%, but low capacity retention of 22%, respectively. $SiO_x$ shells decreased IRC (1,534 mAh/g) and ICE (54%), while the retention increased up to 65%, which can be explained by irreversible phases such as $LiO_2$ and $Li_2SiO_3$. C shells exhibited no differences in IRC and ICE compared to the pristine Si but an enhanced retention of 54%, which might be from proper defect structures.

  • We investigated the fabrication of Si nanoparticle and $C_{60}$ thin films by pulsed laser ablation. As a result, we observed visible green photoluminescence spectra in the Si/C$_{60}$ multilayer films after laser annealing. It is considered that this green photoluminescence is occurred from SiC particles, which is produced reaction of Si nanoparticles with $C_{60}$ via laser annealing.ing.

  • Poly(vinylpyrrolidone) stabilized cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles were loaded onto the surface of silica ($SiO_2$) nanoparticles by using ${\gamma}$-irradiation. TEM micrograph reveals the presence of ~20nm sized CdS nanoparticles on the surface of $SiO_2$ nanoparticles. XRD patterns confirm the crystalline. PL spectra of the simple PVP-stabilized CdS nanoparticle and $SiO_2$@CdS composite confirm the differences in the emission characteristics between them. Two prominent emission peaks were noted around 550 nm and 600 nm for PVP-stabilized CdS nanoparticles). The emission peaks noted for the PVP-stabilized CdS nanoparticles were found to be blue shifted for $SiO_2$@CdS composites. Besides, an additional emission peak around 450 nm was noticed for the $SiO_2$@CdS composite. The presence of CdS nanoparticles influence the emission characteristics and induce quantum confinement effect.

  • Si-carbon composites as anode materials for lithium rechargeable batteries were prepared simply by mixing Si nanoparticles with carbon black and/or graphite through a solution process. Si nanoparticles were well dispersed and deposited on the surface of the carbon in a tetrahydrofuran solution. Si-carbon composites showed more than 700 mAh/g of initial capacity under less than 20% loading of Si nanoparticle in the composites. While the electrode with only Si nanoparticles showed fast capacity fading during continuous cycling, Si-carbon composite electrodes showed higher capacities. The cycle performances of Si nanoparticles in composites containing graphite were improved due to the role of the graphite as a matrix.

  • $Ag@SiO_2@SiO_2$(FITC) nanocomposites were prepared by the simple polyol process and St$\ddot{o}$ber method. Fluorescence enhancement of fluorescein moiety (fluorescein isothiocyanate, FITC) was investigated in the presence of silver nanoparticles in $Ag@SiO_2@SiO_2$(FITC) system with varying thickness (X nm) of first silica shell. Maximum enhancement factor of 4.3 fold was achieved in $Ag@SiO_2@SiO_2$(FITC) structure with the first silica shell thickness of 8 nm and the average separation distance of 11 nm between the surface of silver nanoparticle and fluorescein moiety. The enhancement is believed to be originated from increased excitation rate of fluorescein moiety due to concentrated local electromagnetic field which was improved by interaction of light with silver nanoparticles.

  • We investigated the influences of Ag nanoparticle (NP) arrays and surface nanohole (NH) patterns on the optical characteristics of 10-${\mu}m$-thick c-Si wafers using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. In particular, we comparatively studied the plasmonic effects of both monomer arrays (MA) and heptamer arrays (HA) consisting of identical Ag NPs. HA improved the optical absorption of the c-Si wafers in much wider wavelength range than MA, with the help of hybridized plasmon modes. The light trapping capability of the NH array pattern is superior to that of the Ag plasmonic NPs. We also found that the addition of the Ag HA on the wafers with surface NH patterns further enhanced optical absorption: the expected short-circuit current density was as high as $34.96mA/cm^2$.

  • Newly-developed fabrication of a p-n heterojunction diode constructed with a p-Si nanowire (NW) and an n-ZnO nanoparticle (NP) thin-film by the dielectrophoresis (DEP) technique is demonstrated in this study. With the bias of 20 Vp-p at the input frequency of 1 MHz, the most efficient assembly of the n-ZnO NPs is shown for the fabrication of the p-n heterojunction diode with a p-Si NW. The p-n heterojunction diode fabricated in this study represents current rectifying characteristics with the turn on voltage of 1.1 V. The diode can be applied to the fabrication of optoelectrical devices such as photodetectors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), or solar cells based on the high conductivity of the NW and the high surface to volume ratio of the NP thin film.

  • The nanoparticle magnetite of which diameter was about 3 nm was synthesized in a homogeneous aqueous solution without a template. The synthesized magnetite nanoparticle was easily oxidized to maghemite in an ambient condition. The magnetic properties of the ferrite nanoparticle show superparamagnetism at room temperature and its blocking temperature is around 93 K. Modifying the sequential adsorption method of metal bisphosphonate, we have prepared a multilayer thin film of the ferrite nanoparticle on planar substrates such as glass, quartz and Si wafer. In this multilayer the ferrite nanoparticle layer and an alkylbisphosphonate layer are alternately placed on the substrates by simple immersion in the solutions of the ferrite nanoparticle and 1, 10-decanediylbis (phosphonic acid) (DBPA), alternately. This is the first example, as far as we know, of nanoparticle/alkyl-bisphosphonate multilayer which is an analogy of metal bisphosphonate multilayer. UV-visible absorption and infrared reflection-absorption studies show that the growth of each layer is very systematic and the film is considerably optically transparent to visible light of 400-700 nm. Atomic force microscopic images of the film show that the surface morphology of the film follows that of the substrate in μm-scale image and the nanoparticle-terminated surface is differentiated from the DBPA-terminated one in nm-scale image. The magnetic properties of this ferrite/DBPA thin film are almost the same as those of the ferrite nanoparticle powder only.

  • This study reports the fabrication and application of semitransparent Cu nanoparticle layers. Spin coating and subsequent drying of a Cu colloid solution were performed to deposit Cu nanoparticle layers onto Si and glass substrates. As the spin speed of the spin coating increases, the density of the nanoparticles on the substrate decreases, and the agglomeration of nanoparticles is suppressed. This microstructural variation affects the optical properties of the nanoparticle layers. The transmittance and reflectance of the Cu nanoparticle layers increase with increasing spin speed, which results from the trade-off between the exposed substrate area and surface coverage of the Cu nanoparticles. Since the glass substrates coated with Cu nanoparticle layers are semitransparent and colored, it is anticipated that the application of a Cu nanoparticle-dielectric bilayer structure to transparent solar cells will improve the cell efficiency as well as aesthetic appearance.
