Objective: There are many cases of applying various taping methods to prevent muscle damage and to assist with movement. The purpose of this study was to investigate and to compare the effects of dynamic taping on joint position sense and to find out the difference in error values during various degrees of shoulder flexion. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: A total of 20 subjects participated in this study with a randomized cross-over design. The order of taping was adjusted by randomly proceeding with dynamic taping, sham taping, and no taping. After the taping, the proprioception of the shoulder joint was evaluated. The evaluation of proprioceptive sensation was performed by evaluating joint position sensation. The sequence was adjusted by randomly performing joint position tests at each shoulder flexion of 50, 90, and 110 degrees. All angles were repeated 3 times. Results: There was a significant difference between dynamic taping and no taping in 50 degrees of shoulder flexion. There was a significant difference between sham taping and no taping in 90 degrees of shoulder flexion (p<0.05). No significant difference was found in 110 degrees of shoulder flexion. Conclusions: In this study, it was confirmed that dynamic taping is effective in improving the joint position sense in 50 degrees of shoulder flexion. In the future, it is expected that further studies will be conducted on patients with shoulder dysfunction with decreased proprioception.
Purpose: This study investigated the immediate effects of a figure-8 shoulder brace and taping intervention on round shoulder posture, thoracic kyphosis, and chest expansion mobility in forward head posture. Methods: Thirty patients with forward head posture were assigned randomly to the figure-8 shoulder brace group (n = 15) or the taping intervention group (n = 15). Patients were assessed for forward head posture, shoulder posture, thoracic kyphosis, and chest expansion. Results: The figure-8 shoulder brace and taping intervention groups showed a significant difference for forward head posture, shoulder posture, and thoracic kyphosis after the experiment (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that a figure-8 shoulder brace and taping intervention has a positive effect on rounded shoulder posture, thoracic kyphosis, and chest expansion in patients with forward head posture.
Background: For performing various movements well, cooperation between the muscles around the scapula and shoulder has been emphasized. Taping has been widely used clinically as a helpful adjunct to other physiotherapy methods for shoulder pathology and dysfunction treatment. Previous studies have evaluated the effect of taping techniques using dynamic tapes on shoulder function and pain. However, no study investigated the electromyographic (EMG) changes in the shoulder muscles. Objects: This study aimed to investigate the effect of the upper limb offload taping technique using a dynamic tape on EMG activities of the upper trapezius (UT), lower trapezius, serratus anterior (SA), and middle deltoid (MD) muscles during scaption plane elevation. Methods: A total of 26 healthy subjects (19.85 ± 6.40 years, male = 20) volunteered to participate in this study. The subjects were instructed to perform scaption elevation with and without dynamic taping on the shoulder. Shoulder elevation strength tests were performed at 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%, for the maximal isometric contraction force. Results: There were statistically significant interaction effects between the taping application and shoulder scaption elevation force in EMG activities in the UT (p < 0.05) and MD (p < 0.05). EMG activities in the UT showed significant increases in 50%RVC (reference voluntary contraction, p < 0.05) and 25%RVC (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the EMG activity of the SA significantly increased in 50%RVC (p < 0.01) and 25%RVC (p < 0.01) after dynamic taping. For the MD, the EMG activity level significantly decreased in 100%RVC (p < 0.05). Conclusion: These results indicated that upper limb offload dynamic taping application affects the muscle activities of some shoulder muscles depending on different scaption elevation strength levels. Therefore, we suggest that the upper limb offload dynamic taping can be applied to the shoulders when patients need middle deltoid inhibition or upper trapezius facilitation, such as patients with shoulder impingement syndrome.
Purpose: The study examined the effect of dynamic taping and Kinesio Taping intervention on round shoulder posture, pectoralis minor length, craniovertebral angle, and balance in 20s adults with rounded shoulder posture. Methods: A total of 20s Adults with rounded shoulder posture were recruited and randomized to Group I (n = 15) and Group II (n = 15). Group I performed dynamic taping. Group II performed Kinesio Taping. Round shoulder posture and pectoralis minor length were measured using a tape measure. The craniovertebral angle was measured using a goniometer. Balance was measured using Biorescue. Results: As a result of comparison within groups, groups I and II showed a significant difference for round shoulder posture, pectoralis minor length, craniovertebral angle, and balance after the experiment (p < 0.05). In a comparison between the two groups, the experimental group showed a more significant difference in round shoulder posture, pectoralis minor length, craniovertebral angle, and balance than the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that dynamic taping intervention was effective in round shoulder posture, pectoralis minor length, craniovertebral angle, and balance in 20s adults with rounded shoulder posture.
Background: Prolonged neck flexion during smartphone use is known as a factor of neck pain and alteration of neck muscle activity. Studies on the effects of shoulder taping on neck discomfort and neck muscle responses while texting on a smartphone are still lacking. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of shoulder taping on neck discomfort using a numerical rating scale, and neck muscle activity and fatigue using a surface electromyography during a texting task on a touchscreen smartphone. Methods: Twenty-five healthy adolescents used the dominant hand to perform a 30-minute texting task using a touchscreen smartphone at two separate times under one of the following two conditions: taping across the upper trapezius muscle and no taping. Neck discomfort, normalized root mean square, and normalized median frequency slopes for upper trapezius, cervical erector spinae, and sternocleidomastoid muscles were recorded. Results: The results revealed that shoulder taping provided significantly lower neck discomfort than no taping (p < 0.001). However, shoulder taping did not significantly alter normalized root mean square and normalized median frequency slope values of all muscles when compared with no taping controls. Conclusion: Shoulder taping reduces neck discomfort but does not affect neck muscle activity and fatigue while texting on a touchscreen smartphone.
The purpose of this case study was to evaluate the taping therapy program designed to improve shoulder joint subluxation in hemiplegic patients. This study was 9 males who had hemiparesis with limitation of range of motion (ROM) and subluxation on affected side. Patients received proprioreptive facilitation using shoulder weight shifting and additional A type and B type taping. As a result of this study, Patients showed reduction of the subluxation on hemiplegic shoulder joint. but it was difficult to generalize. We concluded that proprioceptive facilitation using shoulder weight shifting and taping therapy was effective in reducing severe shoulder subluxation. Following studies must be evaluated its statistical significance.

Background: The purpose of this study was conducted to investigate the effects of Push-up plus exercise with kinesio taping on the pain and shoulder motor function in patient with shoulder myofacial pain syndrome. Methods: The patients with myofacial pain syndrome were randomly divided 2 groups. kinesio taping group (n=20) was taken physical therapy program and kinesio taping. Push-up plus exercise with taping group (n=22) was taken physical therapy and kinesio taping with Push-up plus exercise. The kinesio taping applied on upper trapezius and levator scapulae. The Push-up plus exercise performed in standing position and qudripad position during 10 seconds on 15 time, 3 set per each positions. We mearsured the pain degree using PPT, VAS, MPSSI and shoulder motor function using CSA before and after experiment. The significant test of PPT, VAS, MPSSI, CSA according to applying the kinesio taping and Push-up plus exercise between groups used ANCOVA. Results: In the result following analysis, there was significance on PPT (F=7.378, p=.016), VAS (F=13.071, p=.031), CSA (F=5.302, p=.026) between kinesio taping group and Push-up plus exercise with tapping group. Then, Push-up plus exercise with kinesio taping group has significance on the PPT, VAS, CSA in patients with myofacial pain syndrome. Conclusions: It may suggest that kinesio taping combined with Push-up plus exercise will be helpful of the pain and shoulder function improvement in the patients with myofacial pain syndrome.
Background: Patients after rotator cuff (RC) surgery experienced pain, weakness and limited of motion of the shoulder. Physical therapists have used heat therapy, electrotherapy, range of motion (ROM) exercise and other methods to treat patients after RC surgery. In addition, functional taping is also used to support joint movement and to increase shoulder joint stability. Objects: The purpose of this study was to determine the initial effects of functional taping using non-elastic tape on pain, strength and ROM of the shoulder following RC surgery. Methods: Forty-eight patients with who underwent RC surgery volunteered for this study. The subjects were randomly divided into an experimental group (EG, $n_1=25$) and a control group (CG, $n_2=23$). First, non-allergic tape was applied to the shoulder to prevent skin irritation. The EG applied functional taping using non-elastic tape and the CG applied sham taping using elastic tape. Assessment tools included the shoulder pain and disability index for functional activity score, visual analog scale for level of pain, shoulder muscle strength, hand grip strength and ROM testing. Results: Pain score in the both group significantly decreased (p<.05), and change in pain score of in the EG increased significantly than in the CG (p<.05). Shoulder strength and ROM in the both group significantly increased (p<.05). Especially external rotation and extension of the shoulder ROM in the EG increased significantly more than in the CG (p<.05), but the rate of change in the two groups showed no significant difference. Conclusion: These results suggest that functional taping using non-elastic tape was initially effective in decreasing pain score level in patients with RC surgery.
