  • Steel ribs such as H-beam or lattice girder are often reinforced to secure the stability of NATM tunnel when the ground is in the bad condition. When designing, however, steel ribs are not often taken into consideration on the numerical analysis when they are regarded as temporary tunnel supports until shotcrete shows its best performance or if they are, there are various modeling methods. This study shows behavior and loading capacity of steel ribs and shotcrete through the strength test on the bending, pressure and full-scaled. Also, we conducted and analyzed the experiment of composite member consisting of shotcrete and steel ribs under the same condition. Through the result, we can find the fact that shotcrete and steel ribs do not work as one unit because of slipping on the boundary. Also, when numerical analyzing, it was concluded that steel ribs cover all bending moment and shotcrete and steel ribs share with axial force according to the compressive strength.

  • A 5-20 cm thick shocrete has been routinely constructed for NATM tunneling method to stabilize and confine the excavated rock of tunnel construction site. A $40kg/m^3$ of steel fibers are usually mixed into such shotcrete but these steel fibers may not be evenly distributed depending on shotcrete machines, mixing ratios and excavated rock conditions. In this study, square column shotcrete-mimicked concrete specimens of $15cm{\times}15cm{\times}55cm$ were prepared with 5 equal layers and 5 or 20% cement ratio. The specimens were prepared with different reinforced-patterns: non-reinforced, middle layer-reinforced, 1, 3, and 5 layers-reinforced, or all layers reinforced. The specimens were air-cured for 7 days and tested for flexural strength. The influence of steel-fiber distribution on flexural strength and toughness of shotcrete-mimicked concrete specimens was investigated. In the case of a specimen with cement ratio of 20%, a flexural strength increased as a number of fiber-reinforced layer increased. The flexural strength of one-layer reinforced specimen showed 20% less than that of evenly fiber-distributed specimen. On the other hand, a specimen with cement ratio of 5% decreased as the number of fiber-reinforced layers increased. A toughness index increased as the number of fiber-reinforced layers increased, regardless of cement ratios. The toughness index of evenly fiber-distributed specimen showed 2-3 times as large as that of one-layer reinforced specimen.

  • This study was carried out to investigate and analyse the influence of brain and unit weight of cement on the properties of shotcrete through the laboratory and field test. From the results of the test, the shotcrete with high blaine cement showed the rebound ratio lower and the strength properties higher than the shotcrete with normal blaine cement. Such as this was produced also in the mix with low unit weight of high blaine cement.

  • In this study, an experiment in the field was performed to analyze the mechanical properties and the influence of steel fiber and silica fume on the rebound ratios of shotcrete. The experimental parameters which are the reinforcing methods (steel fiber, wire mesh), steel fiber contents (0.0%, 0.5%, 0.75%, 1.0%), silica fume contents (0.0%, 10.0%), layer thickness (60 mm, 80 mm, 100 mm), and the placing parts (sidewall, shoulder, crown) were chosen. From the mechanical test, it was found that the flexural strength and toughness is significantly improved by the steel fiber and/or silica fume. According to the results for the side wall in this test, the larger the fiber contents are in case of steel fiber reinforced shotcrete, the less the rebound ratios are within the range of 20-35%, compared to the wire mesh reinforced shotcrte. And also, the reduced rebound ratios were very larger in using steel fiber reinforced shotcrete with silica fume content of 10%, and these results are true of the shoulder and the crown. respectively.

  • Bonding strength of shotcrete is a significant influential factor which plays the role of collapse prevention of tunnel crown and of debonding prevention of shotcrete induced by the blasting vibration. Thus, the evaluation of the shotcrete bonding state is one of the core components for shotcrete quality control. In this study, the peak particle velocities induced by blasting were measured on the shotcrete in a tunnel construction site and its effect on the bonding state of shotcrete is investigated. Drilling and blasting technique was used for the excavation of intersection tunnel connecting the main tunnel with the service tunnel. Blast-induced vibrations were monitored at some points of the main tunnel and the service tunnel. The shotcrete bonding state was evaluated by using impact-echo test coupled with the time-frequency domain analysis which is called short-time Fourier transformation. Analysis results of blast-induced vibrations and the time-frequency domain impact-echo signals showed that the blasting condition applied to the excavation of intersection tunnel hardly affects on the tunnel shotcrete bonding state. The general blasting practice in Korea was evaluated to have a minor negative impact on shotcrete quality.

  • Interfacial properties between rock mass and shotcrete play a significant role in the transmission of loads from the ground to shotcrete. These properties have a major effect on the behaviours of rock mass and shotcrete. They, however, have merely been assumed in most of numerical analyses, and little care has been taken in identifying them. This paper aimed to identify interfacial properties including cohesion, tension, friction angle, shear stiffness, and normal stiffness, through direct shear tests as well as interface normal compression tests for shotcrete/rock cores obtained from a tunnel sidewall. Mechanical properties such as compression strength and elastic modulus were also measured to compare them with the time-dependent variation of interfacial properties. Based on experiments, interfacial properties between rock and shotcrete showed a significant time-dependent variation similar to those of its mechanical properties. In addition, the time-dependent behaviours of interfacial properties can be well regressed through exponential and logarithmic functions of time.

  • As there are increasing number of tunneling works these days, shotcrete is used as primary supports in order to secure the stability of tunnels. The quality of shotcrete has a direct influence on tunnels, because it is a primary support which secures the stability of completed tunnels as well as the stability of tunnels under excavation. Especially in case that ordinary shotcrete is used under weak rock conditions or at water gushing sections, more shotcrete is needed and rebound ratio increases. As a result, it is hard to keep economic feasibility. In addition to it, in subway construction, there are cases of separated excavation and it may have a bad influence on construction period or quality. Therefore, in this study, we are going to evaluate the early strength of powder type accelerator.

  • This study was performed to get basic information about properties of high blaine slag cement(HSC) to use shotcrete(or sprayed concrete and mortar). Particle size distribution, setting time and compressive strength test, analysis like as SEM, DSC thermal analysis, XRD was carried out to investigate principle properties of HSC. Setting time of HSC was delayed slightly, but influence of accelerators was more bigger than ordinary portland cement(OPC). Compressive strength of HSC at 28 days was more higher than OPC regardless of using accelerators. Results of analysis showed early period hydration products of HSC is more small and located widely, because of the interface of between cement particle and water is increased as specific surface of cement increase. From the SEM observation and analysis of DSC and XRD results, aluminates accelerators bring on some hydration products like as calcium aluminium hydrates, alkali free accelerators increases ettringite and monosulfates. Aluminates accelerators has a advantage of setting time and early strength, alkali free accelerators increases strength after 7 days.

  • The development of high-performance shotcrete lining is essential in improving the long-term durability of tunnels and in introducing single-shell tunnelling methods, where shotcrete as well as rockbolts are used as permanent support members. In this paper, new and advanced admixtures to improve shotcrete performance are introduced. In addition, requirements for mechanical properties as well as test items for quality control of shotcrete are summarized. A case study on the application of the pneumatic pin penetration test which can estimate compressive strength of shotcrete more easily and quickly is also illustrated. Previous studies to analyze the behaviors of shotcrete lining by considering its transient hardening and to carry out the sensitivity analysis of the design parameters of shotcrete lining are discussed to give fundamental concepts on rock-support interactions. Representative single-shell tunnelling methods where high-performance shotcrete lining is applied as a permanent support are also introduced.
