  • In order to improve the electrical performance of ITO/InP solar cells, sulfur passivation technique was employed using (N $H_{4}$)$_{2}$ $S_{x}$ solution. Passivation effects were analyzed by measuring the short circuit current density ( $J_{sc}$ ) of solar cells and photoluminescence (PL) of ITO/InP interfaces. This paper firstly reports the sulfur passivation effects by investigating the correlation between the PL intensity and the short circuit current. Generally, PL intensity and the short circuit current of sulfur passivated sampels wer eincreased, and showed the same trend. Especially, samples prepared at 60.deg. C (N $H_{4}$)$_{2}$ $S_{x}$ solution exhibited the highest $J_{sc}$ and PL intensity. These results demonstrated that the short circuit currents was influenced by the ITO/InP interface states.

  • This paper proposes a methodological scheme for the photovoltaic (PV) simulator design. With the advantages of a digital controller system, linear interpolation is proposed for precise fitting with higher computational efficiency. A novel control strategy that directly tackles two different duty cycles is proposed and implemented to achieve a full-range operation including short circuit (SC) and open circuit (OC) conditions. Systematic design procedures for both hardware and algorithm are explained, and a prototype is built. Experimental results confirm an accurate steady state performance under different load conditions, including SC and OC. This low power apparatus can be adopted for PV education and research with a limited budget.

  • The electric ballast for ceramic metal halide lamp needs a protection circuit to prevent from over voltage and over current in the case that the lamp or the electric ballast are in faults. In this paper, cost-effective and high performance protection circuit is proposed for the electric ballast. The proposed protection circuit is adapted to the electric ballast with $LC_SC_P$ resonance type half bridge inverter. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed circuit can protect effectively under open and short fault conditions.

  • The flux cored arc welding (FCAW) process is one of the most frequently employed and important welding process due to high productivity and excellent workability. The process is performed either as an automated process or as a semi-automatic process. In FCAW process, welding voltage has been considered as a qualitative indication of arc length. But it is necessary to let welding operators know, maintain and manage the arc length directly by estimating and displaying it. In this study, to develop arc length estimation technique, we measured a welding circuit resistance($R_sc$) and then we calculated welding circuit voltage drop($V_sc$). Also, we measured arc peak voltage($V_ap$). By subtracting $V_sc$ from $V_arc$, we can easily calculate net arc voltage drop($V_arc$). Consequently, we suggested arc length estimating equation and basic algorithm by regressive analyzing the relationship between net arc voltage drop($V_arc$) and real arc length(Larc) measured by high speed camera. Therefore, arc length can be predicted by just monitoring welding current and voltage.

  • Theoretical and numerical assessments of approximate evaluations and simplified analyses of piezoelectric structures transverse shear modal effective electromechanical coupling coefficient (EMCC) are presented. Therefore, the latter is first introduced theoretically and its approximate evaluations are reviewed; then, three-dimensional (3D) and simplified two-dimensional (2D) plane-strain (PStrain) and plane-stress (PStress) piezoelectric constitutive behaviors of electroded shear piezoceramic patches are derived and corresponding expected short-circuit (SC) and open-circuit (OC) frequencies and resulting EMCC are discussed; next, using a piezoceramic shear sandwich beam cantilever typical benchmark, a 3D finite element (FE) assessment of different evaluation techniques of the shear modal effective EMCC is conducted, including the equipotential (EP) constraints effect; finally, 2D PStrain and PStress FE modal analyses under SC and OC electric conditions, are conducted and corresponding results (SC/OC frequencies and resulting effective EMCC) are compared to 3D ones. It is found that: (i) physical EP constraints reduce drastically the shear modal effective EMCC; (ii) PStress and PStrain results depend strongly on the filling foam stiffness, rendering inadequate the use of popular equivalent single layer models for the transverse shear-mode sandwich configuration; (iii) in contrary to results of piezoelectric shunted damping and energy harvesting popular single-degree-of-freedom-based models, transverse shear modal effective EMCC values are very small in particular for the first mode which is the common target of these applications.

  • New insights are presented in simplified modeling and analysis of free vibrations of piezoelectric - based smart structures and systems. These consist, first, in extending the wide used piezoelectric-thermal analogy (TA) simplified modeling approach in currently static actuation to piezoelectric free-vibrations under short-circuit (SC) and approximate open-circuit (OC) electric conditions; second, the popular piezoelectric strain induced - potential (IP) simplified modeling concept is revisited. It is shown that the IP resulting frequencies are insensitive to the electric SC/OC conditions; in particular, SC frequencies are found to be the same as those resulting from the newly proposed OC TA. Two-dimensional plane strain (PStrain) and plane stress (PStress) free-vibrations problems are then analyzed for above used SC and approximate OC electric conditions. It is shown theoretically and validated numerically that, for both SC and OC electric conditions, PStress frequencies are lower than PStrain ones, and that 3D frequencies are bounded from below by the former and from above by the latter. The same holds for the modal electro-mechanical coupling coefficient that is retained as a comparator of presented models and analyses.

  • We cultured the rabbit inner medullary collecting duct (IMCD) cells as monolayers on collagen-coated membrane filters, and investigated distribution of the P2Y receptors by analyzing nucleotide-induced short circuit current $(I_{sc})$ responses. Exposure to different nucleotides of either the apical or basolateral surface of cell monolayers stimulated $I_{sc}.$ Dose-response relationship and cross-desensitization studies suggested that at least 3 distinct P2Y receptors are expressed asymmetrically on the apical and basolateral membranes. A $P2Y_2-like$ receptor, which responds to UTP and ATP, is expressed on both the apical and basolateral membranes. In addition, a uracil nucleotide receptor, which responds to UDP and UTP, but not ATP, is expressed predominantly on the apical membrane. In contrast, a $P2Y_1-like$ receptor, which responds to ADP and 2-methylthio-ATP, is expressed predominantly on the basolateral membrane. These nucleotides stimulated intracellular cAMP production with an asymmetrical profile, which was comparable to that in the stimulation of $I_{sc}.$ Our results suggest that the adenine and uracil nucleotides can interact with different P2Y nucleotide receptors that are expressed asymmetrically on the apical and basolateral membranes of the rabbit IMCD cells, and that both cAMP- and $Ca^{2+}-dependent$ signaling mechanisms underlie the stimulation of $I_{sc}$.

  • This paper describes a feasibility analysis result of STATCOM application for the Jeju-Haenam HVDC system. The Jeju-Haenam HVDC system is one of the typical HVDC system interconnected with the low short-circuit-ratio AC system, which is vulnerable to the commutation failure due to the AC voltage variation. STATCOM has been considered as an effective reactive-power compensator to increase short-circuit-ratio of the interconnected AC system. In this study, a simulation model of Jeju-Hacnam HVDC system with STATCOM was developed using PSCAD/EMTDC. The developed simulation model was utilized to analyze the dynamic performance analysis of Jeju-Haenam HVDC system with STATCOM. The analysis results show that STATCOM can improve the dynamic performance of Jeju-Haenam HVDC system, such as load-change recovery performance and fault recovery performance.

  • An image of future power system which has introduced superconducting generator, cable, transformer, fault current limiter, SMES and so on is presented. Conceptual designs of each SC machines and devices are carried out. The SC cable and SFCL utilize the high Tc superconductor(HTS) cooled by liquid $N_2$Other devices use low temperature superconducting cooled by He. The SC power system models are proposed detailedly. In viewpoint of the operation and control SC power system, The concrete design direction and effective role of each SC apparatus are investigated. In this paper, it is pointed that superconducting fault limiters(SFCLs) should play an important part of the quenching current level coordination to prevent the other SC devices from quenching. Finially, SFCL are also expected to he very effective to introduce flexibility of power system configuration and operation due to their possibility to enhance transient stability and reduce short circuit current.

  • The paper presents the electrical performance measurements of a prototype nuclear battery and two types of betavoltaic cells. The electrical performance was assessed by measuring current-voltage properties (I-V) and determining the short-circuit current and the open-circuit voltage. With 63Ni as an irradiation source, the open-circuit voltage and the short-circuit current were determined as 1 V and 64 nA, respectively. The prototype consisted of 10 betavoltaic cells that were prepared using radioactive 63Ni. Electroplating of the radioactive 63Ni on an ohmic contact (Ti-Ni) was carried out at a current density of 20 mA/㎠. Two types of betavoltaic cells were studied: with an external 63Ni source and a 63Ni-covered source. Under irradiation of the 63Ni source with an activity of 10 mCi, the open-circuit voltage Voc of the fabricated cells reached 151 mV and 109 mV; the short-circuit current density Jsc was measured to be 72.9 nA/cm2 and 64.6 nA/㎠, respectively. The betavoltaic cells had the fill factor of 55% and 50%, respectively.
