Three-phase inductive superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with DC reactor rated on 6.6 $KV_{rms}/200 A_{rms}$ has been developed in Korea. This system consists of one DC reactor, AC/DC power converter, and a three-phase transformer, which is called magnetic core reactor (MCR). This paper deals with the short-circuit analysis of the SFCL. The DC reactor was the HTS solenoid coil whose inductance was 84mH. The power converter was performed as the dual-mode operation for dividing voltage between the rectifying devices. The short-term normal operation (1 see) and short-circuit tests (2∼3 cycles) of this SFCL were performed successfully. In regular short-circuit test, the fault current was limited as 30% of rated short-circuit current at 2 cycles after the fault. The experimental results have a very similar tendency to the simulation results. Using the technique for the fault detection and SCR firing control, the fault current limiting rate of the SFCL was improved. From this research, the parameters for design and manufacture of large-scale SFCL were obtained.

This paper proposes a parametric model for inter-turn fault detection in a fault-tolerant permanent-magnet (FTPM) machine, which can predict the effect of the short-circuit fault to various physical quantity of the machine. For different faulty operations, a new effective stator inter-turn fault detection method is proposed. Finally, simulations of vector-controlled FTPM machine drives are given to verify the feasibility of the proposed method, showing that even single-coil short-circuit fault could be exactly detected.
6.6㎸rms/200Arms DC reactor type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been developed. This paper deals with the manufacture and short-circuit test of the SFCL. DC reactor was the HTS solenoid coil whose inductance was 84mH. AC/DC power converter was performed as the dual-mode operation. The short-term run(1 sec) and short-circuit test of this SFCL was performed successfully. The experimental results have a similar tendency to the simulation results. In short-circuit test, at 2 cycles after the fault, fault current limitation rate was about 30%.
Multilevel converter topologies are widely used in many applications. The cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHBMI), which is one of many multilevel converter topologies, has been introduced as a useful topology in high and medium power. However, it has a drawback to require a lot of switches. Therefore, the reliability of CHBMI is important factor for analyzing the performance. This paper presents a simple switch fault diagnosis method for single-phase CHBMI. There are two types of switch faults: open-fault and short-fault. In the open-fault, the body diode of faulty switch provides a freewheeling current path. However, when the short-fault occurs, the distortion of output current is different from that of the open-fault because it has an unavailable freewheeling current flow path due to a disconnection of fuse. The fault diagnosis method is based on the zero current time analysis according to zero-voltage switching states. Using the proposed method, it is possible to detect the location of faulty switch accurately. The PSIM simulation and experimental results show the effectiveness of proposed switch fault diagnosis method.
In this study, inter-turn short fault models of interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM) are developed by adding saliency modeling to surface-mounted permanent magnet motor models. The saliency model is obtained using the deformed flux models based on both fault-winding flux information and inductance variations caused by cross-flux linkages that depend on the distribution of the same phase windings. By assuming the balanced three-phase current injection, we obtain the positive and negative sequence voltages and the fault current in the positive and the negative synchronous reference frames. The output torque model is developed by adding the magnet and the reluctance torque, which are derived from the developed models. To verify the proposed IPMSM model with an inter-turn short fault, finite element method-based simulation and experimental measurement results are presented.
A model of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with an inter turn short fault is proposed using a deformed flux model. The deformed flux model includes not only the fault winding flux information but also the inductance variation of the healthy winding considering the configuration of the winding distribution. With the deformed flux model and the positive sequence current assumption, the proposed model is derived in the positive and negative sequence synchronous reference frame (SRF). The finite elements method (FEM) simulation is applied to validate the proposed PMSM model with inter turn short fault.
With recent ESS (Energy Storage System) fire accident, the fault protection performance is becoming more important. However, there has never been any experiments with the protection performance on the faults in the ESS system level. In this study, the effect of AC ground fault and IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar mode Transistor) short-circuit failure on MW class ESS was performed experimentally for the first time in the world. First of all, the effect of the AC single line ground fault on battery was analyzed. Moreover, the transient voltage was investigated as a function of the battery capacity and the power level. Finally, the breaking capability and insulation performance of ESS were examined under PCS short-circuit fault condition. Through the tests, it was found that ESS protection system safely blocked the faulty current regardless of the faults, whereas the electronic parts such as IGBT and MC (Magnetic Contactor) were broken by the fault current. Also, the electrical breakdown in ESS resulted from the transient voltage during the protection process.
This paper proposes a new fault isolation methodology for a smart protective device which plays an agent role on the smart grid distribution system with the distributed generation. It, by itself, determines accurately whether its protection zone is fault or not, identifies the fault zone and separates the fault zone through the exchange of fault information such as the current information and the voltage information with other protective devices using bi-directional communication capabilities on the smart grid distribution system. The heuristic rules are obtained from the structure and electrical characteristics determined according to the location of the fault and DG (Distributed Generation) when faults such as single-phase ground fault, phase-to-phase short fault and three-phase short fault occur on the smart grid distribution system with DG.
Short circuit and ground fault account for the primary causes of electrical fires. In this research, real-scale experiments were conducted to assess the possibility of electrical fires due to these causes. The experiment conditions were identical with an actual fire accident, in which the power cable was supported by an iron fence. The purposes of this research are to investigate the short circuit caused by wire cutting, the conductivity of the iron fence depending on its coating conditions, and the ground fault of one wire or two wires in an effort to reconstruct the fire accident. The test results show that, owing to the instant operation of circuit breaker in the moment of short circuit or ground fault, the generated ignition energy is far less than necessary to start an ignition. Therefore it is concluded that electrical fire is highly unlikely if the electric system is protected by a circuit breaker with normal functions.
A load flow and short circuit fault simulation of AC electrified railway distribution systems is presented with DIgSILENT PowerFactory software. Load flow of electrified railways distribution system with concerning multi train lines and dynamic characteristics of train load is studied for different time laps. The dynamic characteristics of train load in starting and braking conditions with different starting and stopping times and its moving positions makes the load flow complicated so there is a great need in studying the effects of electrified railways on load flow. Short circuit fault transients is also studied and simulated for both power system or traction distribution system and their effects on the operation of the train sets is investigated.
