From March 1998 to August 2000, the phenological and morphometric changes of Zostera marina L. were examined at the Duksan Port in the eastern coast of Korea. Morphometric characteristics, phenological stage, shoot density, biomass of Z. marina population and environmental parameters were also measured. Nutrient levels in water column varied over the season. Morphometric characteristics of vegetative shoot changed with season; shoot heights ranged from 54.2 cm (March) to 100.0 cm (October). Reproductive shoots appeared from mid-March to early September of which the height was ranged from 97.8 cm (March) to 213.0 cm (July). The flowering phase started at 12$^{\circ}C$ and the fruit development was resulted up to 21$^{\circ}C$. The seed maturing was developed at 22$^{\circ}C$-$25^{\circ}C$. Shoot density and biomass in permanent quadrate (0.25 m$^2$) were significantly different among seasons ranging from 38 to 136 shoots (mean 80.3$\pm$6.5) for shoot density, and 190 g dry wt m$^{-2}$ in October 1998 to 922 g dry wt m$^{-2}$ in June 1998 for biomass respectively. Relationships between shoot morphometrics and physico-chemical parameters were not significantly correlated. Seasonal changes in water temperature seemed responsible for the replacement of reproductive phases and the annual changes of shoot morphometrics in Z. marina populations.
Aronia (Aronia melanocarpa, Black chokeberry) is an important cash crop in domestic agriculture. We investigated the effects of plant growth regulators on shoot proliferation and rooting using in vitro tissue culture. The most effective shoot multiplication was observed on WPM (woody plant medium) supplemented with 1.0 mg/L zeatin ($8.3{\pm}1.0$ shoots/explant), while the highest rooting rate was obtained from half-strength WPM with 3.0 mg/L IBA (8.8 roots/explant). The rooted plantlets all survived in the artificial soil mixture (with a mixture of peat moss : perlite : vermiculite, 1:1:1, v/v/v) and grew up relatively uniform, ranging from 14 to 16 leaves, 8 to 10 cm in stem height, and 2.3 to 2.8 mm in stem diameter. While experimenting with 5 different varieties of Aronia, we found out that each variety had different characteristics of shoot proliferation and rooting. The total numbers of proliferated shoots per variety is as follows: $17.4{\pm}0.8$ for Nero, 14 to 15 for Purple and Mackenzie, and 10 for both Viking and Odamamachiko. Rooting rates were also various depending on the variety: 88% of Odamamachiko, 80% of Viking and Purple, and 76% of Nero and 60% of Mackenzie shoots rooted. The survival rate of the rooted plantlets was from 92% to 100%, varying by type. Further growth appeared to be better in auxin-treated plantlets, compared to untreated ones. Our results showed the possibility of establishing an effective in vitro micropropagation system for Aronia melanocarpa.
Due to limited supplies and expensive importing costs, it is a goal to replace overseas peat with local soil amendments in turf industry of Korea. The study was initiated to compare the performances of five domestic and imported organic soil amendments (OSAs) on establishment characteristics and to provide basic information for root zone composition on sports turf design and construction. The study was conducted in Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L., KB) under greenhouse conditions from March to June in 2008. A total of 25 treatments of OSA + sand were prepared. These amendments were Berger Peat (OMA), Eco-Peat (OMB), G1-Soil (OMC), Premier Peat (OMD), and Supersoil I (OME). Significant differences were observed in establishment vigor, seedling emergence, and top growth. Results varied depending upon the type of OSAs and their rates in rootzone mixtures. OMA reached over 70% in establishment vigor in 5 WAS (weeks after seeding). OMC produced a maximum vigor of approximately 60% in 6 WAS. The OME amendment, however, showed poor performance lower than 30% in establishing KB turf until 8 WAS. There were considerable variations of top growth, being 3.8 to 14.5 cm. Greater differences in top growth resulted from OME mixtures. Shoot growth orientation in KB is also influenced by OSAs. In general, optimum mixing rate was considered as 10 to 20% for establishment vigor and 20 to 40% for top growth. Considering overall responses to establishment vigor, seedling emergence, and shoot growth, both local OMC and overseas OMD are considered as the useful soil amendments applicable for sports turfs. Domestic OME amendment would be applied for a low maintenance turfs such as rough and utility areas due to greater shoot growth. Information on these amendments would be of practical use for sports turf design and construction. Repeated experiments and field performance test are required to evaluate these OSA effect on other major turfgrass species and also to determine local OSA as imported peat substitute.
The $F_1$ hybrid Red Coat is one of the most highly sought after cultivars of tomato in Australia and yields up to 7.5 $\cal{kg/plant}$. An experiment was conducted to de-termine the optimal strength and type of growth medium and sucrose concentration for shoot organogenesis of the Red Coat cultivar using cotyledonary explants. Two basal growth media, viz. MS and Gamborg' s $B_5$ at 0, 1/4, 1/2, full or double strength along with sucrose concentrations of 0, 0.5, 1.5, 3 or $5\%$, were evaluated using 25 replications. The main effects of treatment and their mutual interactions were evaluated for the proportion of explants that produced callus and/or shoots, number of shoots produced per explant, callus diameter and shoot height. The explants failed to produce shoots in the absence of mineral nutrient. Only a small proportion of the explants ($6\%$ with $B_5\;and\;3\%$ with MS) regenerated shoots in the absence of sucrose. Lower sucrose concentrations ($0.5-1.5\%$) along with full strength media were optimal for most of the traits studied. The $B_5$ medium outperformed MS medium for shoot organogenesis. For all the traits examined, significant differences in main effects (P < 0.05) and two-way interactions were detected, but no three-way interactions (medium type $\times$ medium concentration $\times$ sucrose concentration) were observed. Sucrose was found essential for the development of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll content increased with an increase in sucrose concentration up to $3\%$ and decreased at $5\%$ sucrose.
Japanese pepper (Zanthoxylum piperitum Dc.) tree of selected genotype was propagated by a two-step method. Among the media tested, BTM promoted shoot height growth and DKW revealed as superior to micro-canopy increment Multiple shoot formation was greatest when the single shoot were subcultured on medium containing 0.89 $\mu$M BA alone. The numbers of survival shoots could be markedly increased by acclimatization of the multiplied shoots itself in plastic Petridish (punctured with pin on the top) for two weeks and subsequently transplanting each shoot onto peat plug system. After transplanting the micropropagules onto pots, prickliness characteristics seem to be transmitted to all plane produced from selected genotype.

This is the first study to establish a complete protocol for micropropagation of Rehmannia glutinosa from root segments. The study involved investigating the effect of plant growth regulators on in vitro shoot regeneration and rooting and identifying substrates supporting survival and growth performance of ex vitro seedlings. A Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 30 g/L sucrose for shoot induction and 0.2 mg/L indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), 1 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP), and 1 g/L polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) for shoot multiplication resulted in the highest number of shoots per explant and shoot height. Applying a medium containing 0.5 mg/L IAA and 1 g/L PVP yielded optimal rooting of the shoots grown in vitro. Compost enriched with microbial inoculants and perlite enhanced seedling growth better than that with organic biofertilizer-free substrates (soil and sand). We recommend the continuous production of micropropagated R. glutinosa seedlings from root segments under the aforementioned conditions as a possible propagation technique for crops of this species.
Experiments were conducted to find out the optimum condition for in vitro proliferation using shoot tip of Gypsophila paniculata. Formation and fresh weight of adventitious shoots were promoted by shoot culture with $0.2mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA and $0.2mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA in 'Bristol Fairy', while were promoted with $0.2mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ BA and $0.1mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA in 'Red Sea'. Vitrification was suppressed by using $7{\times}13cm $$(diameter{\times}height)$ vessel. Aeration treatment on cap and agar concentration did not affect vitrification, but promoted the elongation of adventitious shoots. Formation of adventitious shoot was inhibited by increasing agar concentration in the medium.

To clarify the reed (Phragmites australis) stand's effects on the sediment properties and its increasing pattern, breaths of reed stands in 1999 and 2000, and sediment properties - water, salt, organic matter, sulphur, nitrogen, carbon and hydrogen contents - along th depth at the three stands in 2007 were surveyed at Suncheon Bay. Regardless of reed stand, the more distance from the land was long, the more water and salt contents of sediment were high. Organic matter content of sediment was high and increased with the reed biomass at the upper layer but low regardless of biomass at the lower layer. Sulphur content of sediment was higher at old reed stand (0.33%) than at new stand (0.21%) or non-vegetated stand (0.23%). Carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen contents of sediment were similar at three stands in mean values. However, their contents were high at upper layer and low at lower layer in a stand. Therefore, the changing pattern of organic matter content with the depth was similar to but not coincided to the inorganic nutrients' ones. The mean breadth of reed stands increased $2.33{\pm}0.73m$ in 1999 and $3.65{\pm}1.64m$ in 2000. However, the increase of reed stands' breadth a year varied along the direction, year or stands, so that there was not a trend in increasing pattern. It was thought that this increasing pattern made the reed's patch round. The height and density of reed shoot in newly formed stand decreased with the distance from the center of stand. In the newly formed peripheral area of a reed stand, the shoot density was not related with the land (north) or sea (south) direction, however, the shoot height was higher in the sea (south) than in the land (north) direction.
This study examined effects of aqueous extracts of rice bran on the inhibition of germination and early growth of annual weeds, barnyardgrass and eclipta. Germination of barnyardgrass treated with 5%(w/v)-sterilized and nonsterilized extracts of rice bran were inhibited by 27% and 63% at 7 days after treatment(DAT), respectively, compared to control. However, plant height and fresh shoot weight of barnyardgrass treated with aqueous extract of rice bran was reduced significantly at higher than 1% for both sterilized and nonsterilized extracts. Plant height and fresh shoot weight of barnyardgrass treated with 5% extract of rice bran were inhibited by 66 to 68% and 75 to 78% at 7 DAT, irrespective of sterilization. The germination of eclipta treated with sterilized and nonsterilized extracts of rice bran were significantly inhibited at concentrations of more than 0.5% and completely at 4% and 5%. Plant height and fresh shoot weight of eclipta affected by the rice bran extracts showed trends similar to the germination rate. The sterilization of rice bran extract resulted in higher inhibition of germination and early growth of eclipta. Rice bran extract was more inhibitory to the germination and growth of eclipta than barnyardgrass. These results suggest that aqueous extracts of rice bran may have inhibitory potential to germination and early growth of weeds.
The objectives of the present study were to find out 1)the differences in growth of radish under foggy and non-foggy condition, 2)the weed competition between radish and major upland weeds including Echinochloa crus-galli, 3)difference in response of radish to herbicide and weed, and finally 4)the fundamental data for the establishment of radish weed control system under locational foggy regions. The research was carried out by tray in greenhouse equipped with Auto Foggy System(SAE KI RIN Co.) and results were summarized as follows. 1. Plant height and shoot fresh weight of radish cultivars(long skirt, delicious altari, green mascot) were not different at the early growth(8 to 38 days after seeding), but increased at 55 days after seeding under foggy condition. Root fresh weight increased only in green mascot cultivar tinder foggy condition. Chlorophyll contents were higher in all the cultivars of radish under foggy condition. 2. Plant height and shoot fresh weight increased at 0 and 20 days of weed competition under foggy condition. Root fresh weight increased at 0, 20 and 35 days of competition under foggy condition. Above 50 days-competition, there was no difference between foggy and non-foggy condition. 3. Napropamide, alachlor and linuron did not show any differences in plant height and shoot fresh weight between foggy and non-foggy condition. Molinate reduced the root fresh weight at 65 days after seeding tinder foggy condition. 4. No difference in weeding efficacy by any herbicides tested was found tinder foggy condition. Weeding efficacy of Aeschynomene indica was reduced under foggy condition.
