  • A computational fluid dynamics simulation of pyrotechnic material combustion inside a cylindrical closed vessel was carried out using the Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The 5th order upwind WENO scheme and the improved delayed detached eddy turbulence model were implemented to capture shock waves. The flow structure was analyzed inside the cylindrical vessel with a pressure sensor installed at the side wall center. The analysis revealed that the pressure oscillated because of the shock wave vibration. Additionally, the simulation results with four different sensor tab depths implied that, inside the sensor tab, eddies were generated by the excessively large gap between the sensor diaphragm and the side wall. These eddies caused irregularity to the measured time-pressure curve, which is an undesirable characteristic.

  • This study observes the difference in the actual regional ripple effect of the decrease in admission resources due to the decrease in school age population, which has been weak in empirical studies, and how much the decrease in competition rate by department nationwide provides a significant shock to the decrease in enrollment rate in the population unit. An empirical quantitative analysis was attempted. As a result of applying the panel-tobit regression model, a clear gap was confirmed in the decrease in the registration rate due to the decrease in the competition rate both nationally and in the provinces, and in particular, a highly significant relationship was derived with the decrease in the recruitment rate. In particular, the sensitivity of the risk of unrecruitment due to a decrease in competition rate was the highest in the Jeolla region (0.499), followed by the Gangwon region (0.475) and the Gyeongsang region (0.471), and the metropolitan region (0.158) was confirmed to be the most stable. This suggests that the gap in insufficient funding has gradually widened by region over the past 10 years, and that the shock wave becomes more pronounced in the provinces farther away from the metropolitan area. Based on this study, if we deviate from the standardized application of university development policies for the metropolitan area and regional universities, and present a customized higher education strategy for each region, it will be an opportunity to prevent local extinction due to a decrease in the school-age population and achieve coexistence with higher education institutions and regions at the same time.

  • The propagation mechanism of a detonation pressure with fully coupled charge is clarified and the blasting pressure propagated in rock mass is derived from the application of shock wave theory. The blasting pressure was a function of detonation velocity, isentropic exponent, explosive density, Hugoniot parameters, and rock density. Probabilistic distribution is obtained by using explosion tests on emulsion and rock property tests on granite in Seoul and then the probabilistic distribution of the blasting pressure is derived from the above mentioned properties. The probabilistic distributions of explosive properties and rock properties show a normal distribution so that the blasting pressure propagated in rock can be also regarded as a normal distribution. Parametric analysis was performed to pinpoint the most influential parameter that affects the blasting pressure and it was found that the detonation velocity is the most sensitive parameter. Moreover, uncertainty analysis was performed to figure out the effect of each parameter uncertainty on the uncertainty of blasting pressure. Its result showed that uncertainty of natural rock properties constitutes the main portion of blasting pressure uncertainty rather than that of explosive properties. In other words, since rock property uncertainty is much larger than detonation velocity uncertainty the blasting pressure uncertainty is more influenced by the former than by the latter even though the detonation velocity is found to be the most influencing parameter on the blasting pressure.

  • We analyzed retrospectively our experience to evaluate an effect of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for renal stone with infundibular stenosis. From January 2002 to August 2005, 35 patients with renal stone with infundibular stenosis were treated with ESWL. The diagnosis of infundibular stenosis was made by intraveneous pyelography or retrograde pyelography. The final follow-up check was performed by simple abdominal film or computed tomography and interview after 6 months to 24 months (mean 10 months). 7(20.0%) of 35 patients was freed completely, but Stone free rate including less than 2 mm size was 80%(28/35). 30(85.7%) patients became asymptomatic, 4(11.4%) patients were continued, and 1(2.9%) patient was required the percutaneous nephrostolithotomy. Although ESWL has a low complete stone free rate, We suggest that renal stone with infundibular stenosis should be treated with ESWL, because that is likely to produce a high symptom free and low complications.

  • How is the flow in a rotating impeller. About 35 years have passed since one experimentalist rotating with the impeller. of a huge centrifugal blower made the flow measurements using a hot-wire anemometer (Fowler 1968). Optical measurement methods have great advantages over the intrusive methods especially for the flow measurement in a rotating impeller. One is the optical flow visualization (FV) technique (Senoo, et al., 1968) and the other is the application of laser velocimetry (LV) (Hah and Krain, 1990). Particle image velocimetries (PIVs) combine major features of both FV and LV, and are very attractive due to the feasibility of simultaneous and multi-points measurements (Hayami and Aramaki, 1999). A high-pressure-ratio transonic centrifugal compressor with a low-solidity cascade diffuser was tested in a closed loop with HFC134a gas at 18,000rpm (Hayami, 2000). Two kinds of measurement techniques by image processing were applied to visualize a flow in the compressor. One is a velocity field measurement at the inducer of the impeller using a PIV and the other is a pressure field measurement on the side wall of the cascade diffuser using a pressure sensitive paint (PSP) measurement technique. The PIV was successfully applied for visualization of an unsteady behavior of a shock wave based on the instantaneous velocity field measurement (Hayami, et al., 2002b) as well as a phase-averaged velocity vector field with a shock wave over one blade pitch (Hayami, et al., 2002a. b). A violent change in pressure was successfully visualized using a PSP measurement during a surge condition even though there are still some problems to be overcome (Hayami, et al., 2002c). Both PIV and PSP results are discussed in comparison with those of laser-2-focus (L2F) velocimetry and those of semiconductor pressure sensors. Experimental fluid dynamics (EFDs) are still growing up more and more both in hardware and in software. On the other hand, computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) are very attractive to understand the details of flow. A secondary flow on the side wall of the cascade diffuser was visualized based either steady or unsteady CFD calculations (Bonaiuti, et al.,2002). EFD and CFD methods will be combined to a hybrid method being complementary to each other. Measurement techniques by image processing as well as CFD calculations give a huge amount of data. Then, data mining technique will become more important to understand the flow mechanism both for EFD and CFD.

  • In this study, authors analyzed the vapor cloud explosion induced by propane leak at the PEMIX Terminal, which is the propane storage facility outside of Mexico City. TNT equivalence mass for the leaked 4750 kg propane was estimated to be 9398 kg. Blast parameters such as peak overpressure, positive phase duration, and impact at 40-400 (m) away from the center of the explosion were calculated by applying TNT Equivalency Method and Multi-Energy Method. The probability of damage due to lung damage, eardrum rupture, head impact, and whole-body displacement impact by applying the probit function obtained using blast parameters was evaluated. The peak overpressure obtained using Multi-Energy Method was found to be greater than the peak overpressure obtained by applying the TNT Equivalency Method at all distances considered, but it was evaluated that there was no significant difference from the points above 200 m. The peak overpressure obtained by Multi-Energy Method was computed to assess the extent of damage to the structure, and it was shown that structures within 100 m of the explosion center would collapse completely, and that the glasses of the structures 400 m away would be almost broken. The probability of death due to lung damage was shown to vary depending on a human body's position located in the propagating direction of shock wave, and if there is a reflecting surface in the immediate surroundings of a human body, the probability of death was estimated to be the greatest. The impact of shock wave on lung damage, eardrum rupture, head impact, and whole-body displacement impact was evaluated and found to affect whole-body impact < lung damage < eardrum rupture

  • A rupture in a high-pressure pipe causes the fluid in the pipe to be discharged in the atmosphere at a high speed resulting in a supersonic jet that generates the compressible flow. This supersonic jet may display complicated and unsteady behavior in general. In this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed to investigate the compressible flow generated by a supersonic jet ejected from a high-pressure pipe. A Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model was selected to analyze the unsteady nature of the flow, which depends upon the various gases as well as the diameter of the pipe. In the CFD analysis, the basic boundary conditions were assumed to be as follows: pipe of diameter 10 cm, jet pressure ratio of 5, and an inlet gas temperature of 300 K. During the analysis, the behavior of the shockwave generated by a supersonic jet was observed and it was found that the blast wave was generated indirectly. The pressure wave characteristics of hydrogen gas, which possesses the smallest molecular mass, showed the shortest distance to the safety zone. There were no significant difference observed for nitrogen gas, air, and oxygen gas, which have similar molecular mass. In addition, an increase in the diameter of the pipe resulted in the ejected impact caused by the increased flow rate to become larger and the zone of jet influence to extend further.

  • The paper looked into the effects of the spectral properties (waveform) of the high intensity focused ultrasound on suppression of the ultrasonic cavitation. Three different types of ultrasound were considered in the study, which were sinusoidal (1 MHz, 5 MPa), frequency modulated (from 1 MHz to 6 MHz for 10 ㎲, 5 MPa), asymmetrically shocked (fundamental frequency 1 MHz, peak positive pressure 12 MPa, peak negative pressure -4 MPa). The temporal response of an air bubble in water initially 1 ㎛ in radius to each type of the ultrasound was predicted using Gilmore bubble dynamic model and Church's rectified gas diffusion equation. It was shown that the radially pulsating amplitude of the bubble was greatly reduced for the frequency modulated wave and was little decreased for the shock wave, compared to the case that the bubble was exposed to the sinusoidal wave. It is interesting that the bubble response to the frequency modulated wave remains similar when the frequency component of the modulated ultrasound is beyond the bubble resonant frequency 3 MHz. This implies that, although the ultrasound is modulated up to 3MHz rather than up to the present 6 MHz, it is likely to produce similar cavitation suppression effects. In practice, it means that a typical narrow band ultrasonic transducer can be taken to generate an appropriate frequency modulated ultrasound to reduce cavitation activity. The present study indicates that ultrasonic cavitation may be suppressed to some extent by a proper spectral modification of high intensity ultrasound.
