  • Study of the wave structure and shear layer in the vicinity of a wall mounted cavity is done by time averaged colour schlieren and time resolved instantaneous shadowgraph technique in an M=1.7 flowfield. Effect of change of cavity width on flow structure is investigated by using constant length to depth (L/D) ratio cavity models with varying length to width (L/W) ratio of 0.83 to 4. The time averaged shock wave structure was observed to change with change in cavity width. Dependence of the shock angle at the leading edge on the shear layer width is also evident from the images obtained. Unsteadiness in the flow field in terms of shear layer dynamics and quasi steady nature of shock waves was evident from the images obtained during instantaneous shadowgraph experiments. Apart from the leading and trailing edge shocks, several other waves and flow features were observed. These flow features and the associated physical phenomena are discussed in details and presented in the paper.

  • A two-dimensional Navier-Stokes code based on AUSMPW+ scheme has been developed to simulate the hypersonic flowfield of hypersonic shock-shock interaction. AUSMPW+ scheme is a new hybrid flux splitting scheme, which is improved by introducing pressure-based weight functions to eliminate the typical drawbacks of AUSM-type schemes, such as non-monotone pressure solutions. To study the real gas effects, three different gas models are taken into account in this paper: perfect gas, equilibrium flow and nonequilibrium flow. It has been investigated how each gas model influences on the peak surface loading, such as wall pressure and wall heat transfer, and unsteady flowfield structure in the region of shock-shock interaction. With the results, the value of peak pressure is not sensitive to the real gas effects nor to the wall catalyticity. However, the value of peak heat transfer rates is affected by the real gas effects and the wall catalyticity. The structure of the flowfield also changes drastically in the presence of real gas effects.

  • This paper describes a study for anti high-shock design of MEMS vibrating ring gyroscope. Structure models was made by MEMS technology processing. MEMS Vibrating Ring Gyroscope mechanical structure were not only anti-high shock simulated with the LS Dyna Ver 971 software but also with mathematical analysis and the finite element method in order to confirm the shock reliability. Shock test result of a MEMS vibrating gyroscope being developed to have gun-hardened survivability while maintaining tactical grade navigation performance for application to various guided projectiles.

  • This study proposes a method of constructing an effective shock absorber. The existing shock absorber is fabricated only with polyethylene; however, the new shock absorber comprises polyethylene on the outside and a high-density material on the inside. The shock was mostly reduced when the density difference between the inner and outer materials was large. Aluminum, titanium, and copper were chosen as the outer structure of two-layer. Shock reduction was most effective in copper with the highest density, and the maximum deceleration was reduced by 43% while the impulse was reduced by 51% in the proposed shock absorber than the traditional shock absorber. In the cases of four-layer and six-layer shock absorbers, the impulse was reduced, but the maximum deceleration was increased. The fuze must survive from the biggest shock and the remaining shock waves should not exceed the threshold. Thus, a two-layer structure shock absorber using polyethylene-copper was proposed.

  • A series of shock wave pulses with Mach number 2.2 of 100, 200, and 300 shocks were applied to lead sulfide (PbS) nanomaterials at intervals of 5 sec per shock pulse. To investigate the crystallographic, electronic, and magnetic phase stabilities, powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM) were employed. The material exhibited a rock salt structure (NaCl-type structure); XRD results indicated that material is monoclinic with space group C121 (5). Further, XRD results showed shifts due to lattice contraction and expansion when material was subjected to shock wave pulses, indicating stable material structure. Based on the data obtained, we believe that the PbS material is a good choice for high-pressure, high-temperature, and aerospace applications due to its superior shock resistance characteristics.

  • The authors performed the underwater explosion analysis for the liquified oxygen tank - a kind of fuel tank of a mid-size submarine, and tried to verify the structural safety for this structure. First, the authors reviewed the theory and application of underwater explosion analysis, using a Structure-Fluid Interaction technique and its finite element modeling scheme. Next, the authors modeled the explosive and sea water as fluid elements, the LOX tank as structural elements, and the interface between the two regions as the ALE scheme. The effect on shock pressure and impulse of fluid mesh size and shape are also investigated. Upon analysis, it was found that the shock pressure due to explosion propagated into the water region, and hit the structure region. The plastic deformation and the equivalent stress were apparent at the web frame and the shock mount of LOX structure, but these values were acceptable for the design criteria.

  • We used the 4 m Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT) at Lowell observatory in 2014 to observe the Guitar Nebula, an Hα bow-shock nebula around the high-velocity radio pulsar B2224+65. Since the nebula's discovery in 1992, the structure of the bow-shock has undergone significant dynamical changes. We have observed the limb structure, targeting the "body" and "neck" of the guitar. Comparing the DCT observations to 1995 observations with the Palomar 200-inch Hale telescope, we found changes in both spatial structure and surface brightness in the tip, head, and body of the nebula.

  • For the development of the original technique of structural safety assessment of Cargo Containment System(CCS) in membrane type LNG carriers, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of dynamic response behavior of CCS structure under sloshing impact pressure. In the previous study, the wet drop impact response analyses of CCS structure in membrane Mark III type LNG carriers were carried out by using Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code, and were also validated through a series of wet drop experiments for the enhancement of more accurate shock response analysis technique. In this study, the characteristics of structural shock response behaviors of CCS structure were sufficiently figured out by careful examinations of the effects of specimen weight, drop height, incident angle, corrugation and stiffness of inner hull on its shock response behaviors. The shock response analysis of upward shooting fluid to inner hull was performed, and the reason of faster strain response than shock pressure one was also figured out.

  • In this paper, optimal spot weld layout design of the shock tower structure is performed for increasing fatigue life of spot weld and fatigue life of shock tower simultaneously. To predict the fatigue life, linear static analysis is conducted then fatigue analysis is performed by applying random vibration load. To optimize the spot weld layout, design variables that have an effect on spot weld fatigue life are selected. Based on the DOE table, spot weld fatigue analysis is conducted. Finally, response surface model is made from fatigue analysis results and optimized spot weld layout model which increases fatigue life of sport weld and fatigue life of shock tower is determined.
