Outfitting and Painting Scheduling for Shipbuilding Using Constraint Satisfaction (제약 만족 기법을 이용한 기관의장과 선행도장의 일정계획)

  • Scheduling for shipbuilding processes has many alternative solutions since it has long time horizon and handles many jobs. In this paper, an shipbuilding scheduling system for outfitting and painting is presented based on constraint satisfaction techniques(CST). We provide a field based model and an efficient solution methodology by using ILOG Scheduler and Solver. ILOG Solver support extensive optimization goals easily. We do verify the improvement and efficiency of the schedule generated by the scheduling system presented in this paper.

  • The shipbuilding scheduling has many possible alternatives because of its long time horizon and a lot of jobs, so it is required that the scheduling system can generate and search feasible alternatives rapidly. The scheduling in the assembly shop is initiated by allocating, namely loading, the assembly blocks to each shop. In this step, the resource capacities (such as available man/hour, available crane) of each shop must be considered. The result of loading without above consideration can make the scheduling result based on that infeasible or worse one. In this paper, we developed the optimal scheduling system of shipbuilding, specifically for loading and scheduling of assembly block, using ILOG Solver/Scheduler. ILOG Solver/Scheduler is a general-purposed commercial software which supports to find a feasible or optimal solution using object oriented technique and constraints satisfaction programming, given constraints and objectives. Also, in order to enhance the system performance, we conducted various experiments of ILOG search strategies. The experimental results showed that the impact of search strategies is significant.

  • This paper deals with pre-erection scheduling and erection scheduling in shipbuilding. Among shipbuilding scheduling, the ship erection scheduling in a dock is one of the most important since the dock is the most critical resource in a shipyard. However, it is more reasonable to consider pre-erection scheduling and erection scheduling as unified because they compete with the common constrained resources such as labor, crane, space, and so on. It is very hard to consider two scheduling problems simultaneously, and hence, we approach them sequentially. At first, we propose space resource leveling heuristics in pre-erection scheduling given erection date. And then, considering the manpower resource determined by pre-erection scheduling, we also propose manpower resource leveling heuristics in erection scheduling. Various experimental results with real world data show that the proposed heuristics have good performance in terms of scheduling quality and time.

  • Scheduling for shipbuilding processes has many alternative solutions since it has long time horizon and handles many jobs. This requests the scheduling system to generate and search feasible alternative solutions in short period of time. Among shipbuilding schedules, the ship erection schedule in a dock is the most important since the dock is the most critical resource in shipyard. In this research, we model the erection scheduling problem for shipbuilding and develop a new problem solving method using CST(Constraint Satisfaction Technique) and ILOG Scheduler. Experimental results show that the proposed scheduling method outperforms the existing manual scheduling methods in terms of schedule performance and required time.

  • In large-scale industry such as shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, and construction industry etc., it is required to consider two or three-dimensional spatial availability as one of bottlenecked resource constraints. We call this kind of scheduling a spatial scheduling, which considers the dynamic spatial layouts of objects as well as the traditional resource constraints. Since 1991, we have researched on the spatial scheduling for shipbuilding plant (Lee & Lee, 1992; Lee et al., 1994, Lee et al., 1995). In this paper, we present the various issues of spatial scheduling for the researchers and developers attacking spatial scheduling problems.

  • Assembly scheduling in shipbuilding is responsible for determine assembly process orders and departmental production schedule for the block, the basic composite unit of ships. It is necessary much more information to decide production scheduling as the characteristic of shipbuilding which has been more complex and more various and also, a lot of waste of time and of human power is generated in the course of data processing. The target shipbuilding manufacturer of this study use empirical techniques, based on the user's discretion, to compile and to apply data which are scattered in DB storages separately. Because of that reason, the user should not only be performed identification and screening operations but also modification and verification for vast amounts of data, so it is hard to keep the consistency of the data and also the operation time is not constant. Accordingly, the object in this study is by presenting an efficient DB framework to reduce wasting time and man-hour at experienced-oriented process, abate user's manual operations and support an efficient scheduling in assembly processes.

  • In this study, we deal a spatial scheduling system for the block painting process in the shipbuilding industry. In general, the spatial scheduling for the block painting process is a very complicated task. Because spatial allocation of each block in blasting and painting cells is considered simultaneously. Thus the spatial scheduling for the block painting process is the problem of planning and control of operation, which arises in shipyard. This system is developed for blocks to meet the delivery date given by the shipyard production planning system, to maximize space utilization of blasting and painting cells and to balance workload among working teams. And it has been tested using actual scheduling data from a shipyard and successfully applied in a paint shop in a shipbuilding company.

  • The up-to-date business environment for Korean manufacturers is very complex and rapidly changing. Especially, the companies have faced with various changes derived from small quantity batch production, diversification of customer demands, and short life cycles of products. Consequently, the Korean manufacturing companies are in need of more efficient production planning and scheduling techniques. In this paper, the research trend of scheduling techniques is investigated to provide relevant information to researchers in this field. Furthermore, some implications for future researches are presented regarding literatures published in Korea over the last 10 years. This paper presents an entire investigation into Korean research works on scheduling (2,569 papers) that are published from 2007 to 2016. Especially, detailed analysis was carried out in the following three industry : 1) semiconductor, 2) shipbuilding and 3) automobile. In this paper, approaches to scheduling presented in the literature are categorized into the following three categories : 1) application, 2) algorithm, and 3) simulation modeling. First, in the semiconductor industry, scheduling techniques related to semiconductor cleaning processes, photolithography processes, chemical processes, transport and transport equipment have been found to be dominant. Second, the shipbuilding industry is focused on assembly processes, transporter, crane and various existing production management system. On the other hand, the scheduling research of the automobile industry is mainly focused on the vehicle movement routing and procurement supply-chain planning algorithm in terms of logistics. The conclusion of this study are expected to provide many implications for various types of academic and practical follow-up studies related to scheduling in consideration of main characteristics of semiconductor, shipbuilding and automobile industries.

  • The dock is the most important resource in shipbuilding yard. Among the shipbuilding schedules, the ship erection schedule in a dock is preferentially built. As results of it, the other schedules(machining in plants, block assembly, pre-painting, pre-rigging, painting and etc) are made. In this study, ship erection scheduling is formulated using ILOG Scheduler. This study is to develop a new problem solving method for ship erection to make an effective schedule based on Constraint Satisfaction Technique(CST).

  • Generally, the shipbuilding industry has finite resources and limited workspace. Due to finite resources, limited workspace and state of block preparation, erection process in shipbuilding industry is frequently delayed than erection process scheduling which is planned at long-term plan stage. In this study, considering variability of block reserve ratio, the degree of delay in real erection process is measured and compared to scheduling which is planned at long-term plan stage in shipbuilding industry including finite capacity and variative lead time. Also, the erection process scheduling which has minimum lead time can be checked through simulation. The results of this study could be improved the accuracy of erection process scheduling by checking the main event compliance ratio by block reserve ratio and calculating the optimum erection pitch for the main event compliance.
