  • There have been several problems in treating shipboard sewage due to special environmental conditions of ship, such as limited space, rolling and pitching, change of temperature and so on. It was suggested that Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) might be suitable process for overcome these problems in terms of small size, high capacity of treating wastewater and full automation. In this study a SBR process was employed for biological treatment of organic wastes in the shipboard sewage. This process was able to remove nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic matter efficiently. More than 95% of chemical oxygen demand(COD) were removed. In addition, about 97% of total nitrogen (T-N) was reduced. The total phosphorus(T-P) reduction averaged 93%. A disturbance operation caused by the treatment of Methylene Blue Active Substances(MBAS) was not observed.

  • This study was carried out for advanced treatment development on shipboard sewage. We employed SBR process using Bacillus sp. to remove Organic compounds, Nitrogen and Phosphorus simultaneously. Based on Res. MEPC.159(55) the system was qualified. From the results it was suggested that SBR system might be suitable process for shipboard sewage treatment in terms of pollutant removal efficiency, maintenance and special environmental conditions of ship. More than 90% of COD and BOD were removed. In addition, aover 50% of T-N and T-P were reduced.

  • Lab scale experimental study was carried out for SBR process, to investigate the effects of influent ship sewage organic compound removal and Bacillus sp. state on design parameters. The performance load of SBR process was shown to be 0.095kg ${\cdot}$ TOC/$m^{3}$ ${\cdot}$ day. The pH was decreased from 8.1 to 7.0 within 30 min and increased to 7.3 at the end of anoxic stage, and these phenomena were explained. The sluge produced in the SBR process is characterized by low generation rate (about 0.36kg ${\cdot}$ MLSS/kg ${\cdot}$ TOC) and excellent settleability. The number of Bacillus sp. in the SBR was 24.2%, indicating that Bacillus sp. was a predominant species in the reactor.

  • Lab scale experimental study was carried out for SBR process, to investigate the effects of influent ship sewage organic compound removal and Bacillus sp. state on design parameters. This process was able to remove nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic matter efficiently. More than $92.0\%$ of chemical oxygen demand(COD) were removed. In addition, about $84.0\%$ of total nitrogen (T-N) was reduced. The total phosphorus(T-P) reduction averaged $93\%$. The performance load of SBR process was shown to be $0.095kg{\cdot}TOC/m3{\cdot}day$. The pH was decreased from 8.1 to 7.0 within 30 min and increased to 7.3 at the end of anoxic stage, and these phenomena were explained. • The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ship, 1973, as modified by the Proto-col of 1978 relating thereto, well known as MARPOL 73/78, is probably the most important international agreement on the subject of marine pollution. The main purpose of the Convention is to reduce the total oil remaining on board vessel to minimum. MARPOL is a combination of different sets of rules on oil, chemicals, noxious substances in package forms, sewage and garbage as shown on each Annex. Since the Convention has globally set forth in 1973, it has amended so often whenever reasonable articles are requi-red by contracting states under guidelines of IMO. The amendments, for instance, have continuously perfo-rmed more than 8 times regarding articles, protocols, and five annexes because the original text was badly drafted as the control measures were expressed in general way. This paper, therefore, is intend to summa-rize a main point relating to each amendment, so that persons who have an interest in the Convention would be completely understand for practical implementation. Especially, for legislative purpose or annen-dement of domestic law, it could timely be contributable if specific consolidation and unified interpretations are followed with this paper. Consequently it is much more worth to study for preventing marine pollution from ship with tracing every moment whenever the Convention formally adopted through amending up-to-data.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop Sewage Treatment Plant that treat sewage which occurred in ship using fixed media method and to consider applicable to the Pilot Scale device of the STP regulations in MLTM(Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs) and MEPC(Marine Environment Protection Committee). In test results, pH geometric mean was 7.68, $BOD_5$(Biochemical Oxygen Demand) geometric mean was 7.28 mg/l, $COD_{cr}$(Chemical Oxygen Demand) geometric mean was 48.39 mg/l, TSS(Total Suspended Solid) geometric mean was 18.00/l, Residual chlorine geometric mean was 0.19 mg/l, and E. coli geometric mean was 1CFU/100 ml. In addition, about 97.4% of $BOD_5$ was reduced, the $COD_{cr}$ reduction averaged 96.4%and the TSS reduction averaged 97.6%. STP have been determined by the MLTM and MEPC regulation of the marine pollution prevention equipment for performance testing product.
