It has been well appreciated that reducing weld-induced deformation as law as possible is important during fabrication for a more efficient production of blocks. The weld-induced deformation is more serious in thin plates than in thick plates because heat affect zone of thin plates is wider than that of thick plates and in addition internal and external constraints much more influence upon weld-induced deformation of thin plates. This paper deals with the application of the mechanical tensioning method to butt weld of thin plates to reduce the weld-induced deformation. In order to investigate the quantitative effect of tensioning method upon the reduction of angular deformation and shrinkage in longitudinal and transverse direction of weld line, butt welding test have been carried out for several thin plate specimens with varying plate thickness and magnitude of tensile load. From the present experimental study, it has been found that the tensioning method is very effective on reduction of weld-induced residual stress as well as weld-induced deformation.
The use of high tensile steel plates is increasing in the fabrication of ship and offshore structures. The softening region which has lower yield stress than base metal is located to prevent cracking in the conventional high tensile steel. Also, thermo mechanical control process(TMCP) steel with low carbon equivalent has the softening region which occurs in the heat affected zone when high heat input weld is carried out. The softening region in the high tensile steel gives rise to serious effect on structural strength such as tensile strength, fatigue strength and ultimate strength. In order to make a reliable structural design using high tensile steel plates, the influence of the softening on plate strength should be evaluated in advance. In the previous paper, the authors discussed the ultimate compressive strength of 50HT steel square plates with softening region. In this paper, the ultimate compressive strength with varying the yield stress of softening region and the aspect ratio of the plate is investigated by using the elasto-plastic large deformation finite element method.
Welding work in pre-erection or erection stage of shipbuilding construction to be carried out in flat and vertical upward position mostly and Electrogas welding(EGW) is actively applied especially for vertical butt joint of thicker steel plate recently. In this study considered how to develope and improve mechanical properties of weld metal and HAZ in high heat input welding processes such as EGW and Electroslag welding(ESW) with its welding equipment in order to extend the application range to the longitudinal members and hatch coaming parts of container ship. Some components of welding system and parameters were modified to get the faster travel speed and reduce weld heat input, and also by adding additional filler rods or tubes increase the amount of deposited weld metal. With the test get some good date can apply to actual fabrication work and recommend items to manufacture welding materials make better. Above all things it's a fruition that to prepare the possibility of application of ESW to shipbuilding construction which fill up the gap of stoppage days of more than 20 years.

Thick plate is currently widely used in shipbuilding due to the increasing of size of ships. However, its use has increased welding groove angles and volume. The welder's technique must be good enough to improve productivity while preventing defects. Generally, the groove angle can be reduced to less than a flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) machine setting of $35{\pm}5^{\circ}$, requiring fewer welding passes while maintaining high productivity and reduced heat input. Therefore, welding technique can be prevented by improved mechanical properties and welding deformation. Welding defects such as lack of fusion (LF), lack of penetration (LP) and hot cracking should be considered when reducing the groove angle for related applications. In this study, a welding groove angle of $25{\pm}5^{\circ}$ is verified as suitable for FCAW design and fabrication. The experimental results confirm the effects on the strength characteristics of FCAW weldment when reducing groove angle to improve the productivity of shipbuilding industries.
A Macroscopic combination of two or more distinct materials is commonly referred to as a "Composite Material", having been designed mechanically and chemically superior in function and characteristic than its individual constituent materials. Composite materials are used not only for aerospace and military, but also heavily used in boat/ship building and general composite industries which we are seeing increasingly more. Regardless of the various applications for composite materials, the industry is still limited and requires better fabrication technology and methodology in order to expand and grow. An example of this is that the majority of fabrication facilities nearby still use an antiquated wet lay-up process where fabrication still requires manual hand labor in a 3D environment impeding productivity of composite product design advancement. As an expert in the advanced composites field, I have developed fabrication skills with the use of machinery based on my past composite experience. In autumn 2011, the Korea government confirmed to fund my project. It is the development of a composite sanding machine. I began development of this semi-robotic prototype beginning in 2009. It has possibilities of replacing or augmenting the exhaustive and difficult jobs performed by human hands, such as sanding, grinding, blasting, and polishing in most often, very awkward conditions, and is also will boost productivity, improve surface quality, cut abrasive costs, eliminate vibration injuries, and protect workers from exposure to dust and airborne contamination. Ease of control and operation of the equipment in or outside of the sanding room is a key benefit to end-users. It will prove to be much more economical than normal robotics and minimize errors that commonly occur in factories. The key components and their technologies are a 360 degree rotational shoulder and a wrist that is controlled under PLC controller and joystick manual mode. Development on both of the key modules is complete and are now operational. The Korean government fund boosted my development and I expect to complete full scale development no later than 3rd quarter 2012. Even with the advantages of composite materials, there is still the need to repair or to maintain composite products with a higher level of technology. I have learned many composite repair skills on composite airframe since many composite fabrication skills including repair, requires training for non aerospace applications. The wind energy market is now requiring much larger blades in order to generate more electrical energy for wind farms. One single blade is commonly 50 meters or longer now. When a wind blade becomes damaged from external forces, on-site repair is required on the columns even under strong wind and freezing temperature conditions. In order to correctly obtain polymerization, the repair must be performed on the damaged area within a very limited time. The use of pre-impregnated glass fabric and heating silicone pad and a hot bonder acting precise heating control are surely required.

Nondestructive testing is one of the most commonly used quality inspection methods for evaluating ship structures. However, accurate evaluation is dif icult because various composite materials, such as reinforcements, resin, and fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs), are used in hulls, and manufacturing quality differences are likely to exist owing to the fabrication environment and the skill level of workers. This possibility is especially true for FRP ships because they are significantly thicker than other structures, such as automobiles and aircraft, and are mainly manufactured using the hand lay-up method. Because the density of a material is a critical condition for ultrasonic inspection, in this study, a hull plate was selected from a vessel manufactured using e-glass fiber, which is widely used in the manufacture of FRP vessels with the weight fraction of the glass content generally considered. The most suitable ultrasonic testing conditions for the glass FRP hull plate were investigated using a pulse-echo ultrasonic gauge. A-scans were performed with three probes (1.00, 2.25, and 5.00 MHz), and the results were compared with those of the hull plate thickness measured using a Vernier caliper. It was found that when the probe frequency was higher, the eco-pulse velocity of the receiver had to be lowered to obtain accurate measurement results, whereas fewer errors occurred at a relatively low probe frequency.
Floating debris was recorded from a training ship, $\sharp$1 Kwanaksan, of Pukyong National University with about 10 knots speed at July 15th and 20th of 1997. The sampled area is the middle of southern sea of Korea, divided into 44 unit segments on survey routes. Debris fabrication materials were categorized with 6 items using the following; man-made or natural wood items, paper and cardboard, nylon netting and rope, styrofoam, plastics, floating metal and glass containers. All identified items within a 100 $\pm$ 2 m wide band were recorded but ignored if beyond this boundary. The results of distribution and transport of floating debris in the area are as follows: 1. The quantities of debris during the survey were distributed from $1.6\~369.7\;items/km^2$. The most obvious trend is the widespread distribution of all debris. The highest densities of all debris were discovered in the coastal waters of Namhae and Yokji island, and of about 50 km off from the southward of Yokji and about 74 km off from the eastward of Komun island. Especially many of small styrofoams within $\phi$20 cm were observed in these segments. 2. Styrofoams and plastics were composed of $83.5\%$ among all debris, next woods items, $9.8\%$. 3. The quantities, distribution shapes and composition of debris were varied as the observed duration and the natures of each items. 4. These phenomena are concluded that firstly they depend on the river discharges included debris due to precipitation falls, secondly inflow or dumping debris are drifting to the off-shore by Kuroshio currents present at their adjacent sea, But on the basis of the observed data it is difficult that source position, quantities and inflow items of debris are identified, and also the transport processes is pursue. further more surveys are continuously being investigated, and from this it is hoped that a much wider coverage can be achieved, perhaps on all sites of the Coast of Korea and contributed to the stationary area, finding of sources, removal method of debris and resistants of marine productivity.

This paper deals with the development of bonded joints for fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) hull structures using moulding-in concept. Focus is placed on bonded in-plane connections between two adjacent panels that could form the boundaries of hull structural module. Traditional construction in FRP hull structures requires the construction of a mould, usually from steel or aluminium. In this construction the FRP materials are laid in the mould, and resin is saturated, and then the structural member is cured. This is expensive since it involves the fabrication of metal hull mould for every different hull type, which is sacrificed after the production of the FRP ship. One way of encouraging greater use of FRP in ship construction is to investigate the possible construction of FRP hull structures in a similar manner to metallic ships, that is in terms of blocks or modules. Such a manner of construction would eliminate the need for expensive hull moulds permitting greater flexibility in the construction of FRP ships. The main issue then would be the design and construction of adequate bonded connections between adjacent panels. To fulfill this object, the simplified and automated way of manufacturing joint edge shapes for bonded joints is developed, and their structural assessment is performed in both experimentally and numerically.

Ballast water is carried by ships to ensure stability, trim and structural integrity. When a ship loads cargo, the ballast water is discharged. When foreign marine microorganisms are introduced into new marine environments, they pose a threat to the local marine ecological system. UV system is commonly used for the disinfection of waste and surface water. This method would not be as efficient because some species do survive to form viable populations, much of the sediment and organisms at the bottom of tanks, and may become serious pests. In this paper, we designed and implemented ballast water treatment system using fuzzy PID controller to prevent lamp damage, and to reduce the formation of the viable populations. The experiments were conducted with ballast water treatment system using fuzzy PID controller with short time exposure to the temperature above $40^{\circ}C$. This system was shown to be effective by significantly reducing bacterial population and lamp life extension through appropriate temperature of ballast water.

In this paper, we dealt with the design and fabrication of a medium pressure ultra-violet (UV) lamp and a magnetic ballast which are main components for ballast water treatment systems (BWTS). To acquire an optimal discharge condition of UV lamp, electrical and optical characteristics depending on the argon gas volume and the amount of mercury were experimentally analyzed. Rated voltage, current and power consumption of a prototype lamp were 490 [V], 8.6 [A] and 4.0 [kW], respectively. UV intensity of the lamp was 15 [%] higher than that of an equivalent lamp which is used in a BWTS. The magnetic ballast was designed in a UI core type through theoretical analysis and simulation. The open voltage and the rated power consumption of the ballast were 920 [V] and 8.5 [kVA] respectively. The disinfection efficacy which is carried out in a BWTS equipped with the UV lamp and magnetic ballast was over 99.99 [%], and this satisfy the IMO regulations.
