Heave Motion Estimation of a Ship Deck for Shipboard Landing of a VTOL UAV (수직이착륙 무인기 함상 착륙점의 상하 운동 추정)

  • When a helicopter lands on a ship deck in high sea states, one of main difficulties is the ship motion by sea wave, In case of a manned helicopter, a pilot lands a helicopter on the deck during quiescent period of ship motion, which is perceived from different visual cues around landing spot. The capability to predict this quiescent period is very important especially for shipboard recovery of VTOL UAV in harsh environments. This paper describes how to predict heave motion of a ship for shipboard landing of a VTOL UAV. For simulation, ship motion by sea wave was generated using a 4,000 ton class US destroyer model. Heave motion of ship deck was predicted by applying auto-regression method to generated time series data of ship motion.

  • The Seakeeping committee of Korea Towing Tank Conference executed the cooperative experimental study on deck wetting phenomena using S-175 contatiner model ships. Two members, Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering(KRISO) and Hyundai Maritime Research Institute(HMRI) participated in the study. This study was initiated by the ITTC(International Towing Tank Conference) Seakeeping Committee as the cooperative study of the 19th ITTC aiming at the establishement of the model test procedure on the deck wetting phenomena. Special emphasis was made on the determination of reliable record length for experimental measurement on rarely occurring events(such as deck wetness, slamming etc). Comparisons were made on both the test results and the test procedrues in this research. The measured frequencies of deck wetting show remarkable deviations between the runs. This fart implies that sufficiently long record length is required in the deck wetness measurement compared to the conventional ship motion tests. Careful considerations were made on the physical interpretation of the deck wetting phenomena, the correlation between the measured relative motion at stemhead and the measured deck wetness, and the estimation of deck wetting frequencies by Poisson process.

A Study on Motion of a Flooding and Un-steerable Vessel in Stormy Weather Condition (침수된 조타불능선의 악천후에서의 거동연구)

  • This paper conducted a simulation to research the motion of a vessel, which had the flooding accident in the Bering Sea in 2014, thereby being flooded and un-steerable. As the wind condition was very harsh, the vessel was modeled as 3D including large upper deck structures and the Fujiwara's method was used for an estimation of the effect of wind forces and moments acting on ship. In the case of wave influence, AQWA-Drift that enables considering the effects of drift force and AQWA-Naut that enables considering the effects of green water were mainly used. Basically, loading and flooding condition were equal to the accident condition but half-drained condition was also used to consider drain ability. Furthermore, both 6 DOF and 5 DOF option that Yaw motion is fixed, were utilized to compare the steerable and un-steerable condition. As a result, the author found out that what roll angle triggers green water, how often it happens, and how the vessel moves on the stormy weather condition.
