Analysis and Proposal of Communication System for Maritime HF Band Digital Data Exchange (해상 HF대역 디지털 데이터 교환을 위한 통신시스템 분석 및 제안)

  • IMO (International Maritime Organization) has been providing GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) and mandating to install distress and safety systems according to SOLAS. Digital-HF(High-Frequency) coast station communication system maintains interoperability between ship and coast station and digital data exchange in maritime mobile service by digitizing existing analog base voice communication. In this paper, we analyze ITU-R M. 1798-1 established by ITU for digital HF communications and propose Advanced annex2 and new Annex 5 to improve the problems of the existing Annex 2 and Annex 4. The proposed OFDM protocol basically adopts ARQ (Automatic Retransmission Request) which retransmits when an error occurs in a half-duplex manner between an information transmitting side (ISS) and an information receiving side (IRS) and we propose a digital HF communication system and its operational concept which is more reliable and superior than the existing ITU-R M. 1798 by implementing technical development on implementation and performance improvement.

The Development of the Anchor Dragging Risk Assessment Program (선박 주묘 위험성 판별 프로그램 개발에 관한 연구)

  • Marine accidents caused by dragging anchors occur constantly due to enlargement of ships' size and unusual weather conditions. Nevertheless, vessel operators rely on their experience because the calculations of actual holding power and external forces are complex and inconvenient. The purpose of this study was to propose a program for the anchor dragging risk assessment in order to provide crew and VTSO with the information to determine easily the danger of dragging and take appropriate action. The input data in this program were composed of the ship's basic particulars, anchoring condition, and external environment etc. on calculating for the wind pressure, frictional force, drift force, and holding power. Three dragging anchor accidents were applied to the program's data input at the time of the day, then the result was assessed by 'warning', which was verified with a high confidence. As a result, the risk of dragging anchors can be predicted in advance through this program. In further studies, it is necessary to simplify the input data and improve user convenience through automatic input from various equipment.

Investigations of the Potential Fisheries Resources in the Southern Waters of Korea - Hydroacoustic Investigations of Abundance and Distributing of Fish - (한국 남해안의 잠재어업자원 조사연구 - 어업생물자원의 음향학적 조사 -)

  • The hydroacoustic surveys to provide the essential information for the assessment, management and utilization of fishery resources in the southern waters of Korea were carried out during five research cruises between October 1996 and October 1997 by the training ship KAYA of Pukyong National University. These hydroacoustic investigations were designed to obtain more precise estimates of the geographic distribution, absolute abundance and biological characteristics of the fishery resources, and the vertically integrated densities of fish in terms of volume backscattering strength(SV) by survey region and depth bins, such as the entire water column and the 0~ 10 m from bottom fraction, were measured separately. Hydroacoustic data were collected by using a Simrad EK 500 Scientific echo sounder operating at two frequencies of 38kHz and 120kHz and the data stored in field were later processed on a HP PC using a Simrad EP 500 echo integration and target strength analysis system. The biological compositions of echo signal were identified and sampled using a demersal trawl during daylight hours. The mean target strength to scale the echo integration data for hydroacoustic surveys was derived from the relationship between the SV and the weight of trawl catch per unit volume of the water column sampled by demersal trawls. The results obtained can be summarized as follow : 1. The mean volume backscattering strength for the entire water column in the southern waters of Korea between 1996 and 1997 were -67.2 dB and -70.9 dB at two frequencies of 38 kHz and 120 kHz , respectively, and for the bottom layer of the 0-10 m from bottom friction were -68.8 dB, -70.2 dB, respectively. That is, the volume backscattering strength for the entire water column at low frequency was higher than that at high frequency. 2. The relationship between the mean backscattering strength (〈SV〉, dB) for the depth strata of trawl hauls and the weight (C, kg/m3) per cubic meter of the catch sampled by bottom trawling in the southern waters of Korea in January and July 1997 were expressed by the following equations: 38 kHz : 〈SV〉= -28.2 + 10 log(C), 120 kHz : 〈SV〉= -32.4 + 10 log(C). The mean weight -normalized target strengths derived from these equitions were -28.2 dB/ kg, -32.4 dB/ kg at 38 kHz and 120 kHz , respectively. That is, the mean weight -normalized target strength at 38 kHz was 4.2 dB higher than that at 120 kHz. 3. The distribution density of fish in terms of biomass per unit volume in the southern waters of Korea were estimated to be 125.9 $\times$ 10-6 kg/m3 and 141.3 $\times$ 10-6 kg/m3 at 38 kHz and 120 kHz , respectively.

Estimation of demersal fish biomass using hydroacoustic and catch data in the marine ranching area (MRA) of Jeju (제주바다목장해역에서 수중음향과 어획데이터를 활용한 저층 어류의 현존량 추정)

  • Hybrid surveys using hydroacoustic and fish sampling gears such as trammel net, trap were conducted to investigate total biomass, distribution and dominant fish species of the demersal fishes in the marine ranching area (MRA) of Jeju. Four surveys were carried out in June, August, October and November using 38kHz quantitative echo sounder. Catch data using trammel net and trap were used to calculate biomass and to examine dominant fish species. Fish schools were mainly detected in the waters of 20 meters below and around Chagwido waters. By the result of fishing experiments, fish species living in MRA of Jeju were about 40 species, dominant fish species of a detectable fish such as Family Sparidae and Family Monacanthidae etc. were identified 59.4~68.8% of total biomass. Based on the hydroacoustic data, fish length-weight function and target strength information, mean density of the demersal fish estimated were as follows; 0.88g/$m^2$ on June, 1.12g/$m^2$ on August, 1.35g/$m^2$ on October and 1.18g/$m^2$ on November. An estimated average biomass in MRA of Jeju was founded 20.5 tons in 2007, 20.6 tons in 2008, 23.0 tons in 2009, 25.9 tons in 2010. The results showed that biomass of MRA is getting increased slowly. Therefore the hybrid survey method using hydroacoustic and fish sampling gears is assured an effective biomass survey in the waters of mixed species.

  • Collection and management of various information related to the ballast water are the essential components for the efficient implementation of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention. Based upon the ballast water risk assessment and information system developed by other states, regions or even at global level, an integrated information system has been established to be applied to our domestic ports. The integrated information system is composed of four DataBases (DB) which are the Shipping DB, Ballast water DB, Port Environment DB and Species DB. The Shipping DB has been established based on the data collected from the Port Management Information System (Port-MIS). For the Ballast water DB, Ballast water has only been estimated by the loading/unloading of the cargoes as the convention has not come into effect yet. The Port Environment DB and Species DB are being established based on the reference documents and existing and newly collected monitoring data. From these DB, the integrated information system will be able to provide a base for the information search, statistic analysis and risk assessment of ballast water. Once the convention comes into effect, this integrated information system will be applied to manage the domestic ballast water discharge and also the port management.

A Development of Simple Fuel Consumption Estimation and Optimized Route Recommendation System based on Voyage Data of Vessel (항차 데이터 기반 간이 연료 소모량 추정 및 최적 경유 항구 추천 시스템 개발)

  • Recently, The MRV (monitoring, reporting and verification) regulation, which measures, reports and verifies the emission gas of vessel to head for member countries of Europe Union (EU), is being implemented. As part this reason, we develop a system that estimates simple fuel consumption and recommends optimized stop-over ports of vessel, to calculate amount of carbon emission. To do this, we analyze fuel, distance and time consumption between port and the other port based on stored voyage data for over 10 years of real-ship, and implement a simple fuel consumption estimation module using analyzed result. Also, we design and implement the optimized route recommendation algorithm, existing navigation route display function including comparison with the optimized routes and user custom route plan function. Therefore, we expect the developed system is helpful when makes a navigation route and so on by reference indexes and we anticipate the system to have a sense for future research which learns and predicts for accuracy result.

Spatial distribution of hydrocarbon reservoirs in the West Korea Bay Basin in the northern part of the Yellow Sea, estimated by 3D gravity forward modeling (3차원 중력 모델링에 의해 예측된 황해 북부 서한만 분지 석유 저류층의 공간적 분포)

  • Although an amount of hydrocarbon has been discovered in the West Korea Bay Basin (WKBB), located in the North Korean offshore area, geophysical investigations associated with these hydrocarbon reservoirs are not permitted because of the current geopolitical situation. Interpretation of satellite derived potential field data can be alternatively used to image three-dimensional (3D) density distribution in the sedimentary basin associated with hydrocarbon deposits. We interpreted the TRIDENT satellite-derived gravity field data to provide detailed insights into the spatial distribution of sedimentary density structures in the WKBB. We used 3D forward density modeling for the interpretation that incorporated constraints from existing geological and geophysical information. The gravity data interpretation and 3D forward modeling showed that there are two modeled areas in the central subbasin that are characterized by very low density structures, with a maximum density of about $2,000kg/m^3$, indicating some type of hydrocarbon reservoir. One of the anticipated hydrocarbon reservoirs is located in the southern part of the central subbasin with a volume of about $250km^3$ at a depth of about 3,000 m in the Cretaceous/Jurassic layer. The other hydrocarbon reservoir should exist in the northern part of the central subbasin, with an average volume of about $300km^3$ at a depth of about 2,500 m. A comparison between the TRIDENT derived gravity field and the ship-based gravity field measured in 1980s shows us that our results are highly reliable and there is a very high probability to detect another low-density layer existings in the northwestern part of the central subbasin.

A study on the estimation of wind noise level using the measured wind-speed data in the coastal area of the East Sea (동해 연안에서 관측된 풍속자료를 이용한 바람소음준위 추정 연구)

  • Unlike ship noise that radiates from moving ships, wind noise is caused by breaking waves as a result of the interaction between the wind and the sea surface. In this paper, WNL (Wind Noise Level) was modeled by considering the noise source of the wind as the bubble cloud generated by the breaking waves. In the modeling, SL( Source Level) of the wind noise was calculated using the wind-speed data measured from the weather buoy operated in the coastal area of the East Sea. At the same time as observing the wind speed, NL (Noise Level) was continuously measured using a self-recording hydrophone deployed near the weather buoy. The modeled WNL according to the wind speed and the measured NL removing the shipping noise from the acoustic raw data were compared in the low-frequency band. The overall trends between the modeled WNL and the measured NL were similar to each other. Therefore, it was confirmed that it is possible to model the WNL in the shallow water considering the SL and distribution depth of bubble cloud caused by the wind.

Collision Risk Assessment by using Hierarchical Clustering Method and Real-time Data (계층 클러스터링과 실시간 데이터를 이용한 충돌위험평가)

  • The identification of regional collision risks in water areas is significant for the safety of navigation. This paper introduces a new method of collision risk assessment that incorporates a clustering method based on the distance factor - hierarchical clustering - and uses real-time data in case of several surrounding vessels, group methodology and preliminary assessment to classify vessels and evaluate the basis of collision risk evaluation (called HCAAP processing). The vessels are clustered using the hierarchical program to obtain clusters of encounter vessels and are combined with the preliminary assessment to filter relatively safe vessels. Subsequently, the distance at the closest point of approach (DCPA) and time to the closest point of approach (TCPA) between encounter vessels within each cluster are calculated to obtain the relation and comparison with the collision risk index (CRI). The mathematical relationship of CRI for each cluster of encounter vessels with DCPA and TCPA is constructed using a negative exponential function. Operators can easily evaluate the safety of all vessels navigating in the defined area using the calculated CRI. Therefore, this framework can improve the safety and security of vessel traffic transportation and reduce the loss of life and property. To illustrate the effectiveness of the framework proposed, an experimental case study was conducted within the coastal waters of Mokpo, Korea. The results demonstrated that the framework was effective and efficient in detecting and ranking collision risk indexes between encounter vessels within each cluster, which allowed an automatic risk prioritization of encounter vessels for further investigation by operators.

Fundamental Study on Algorithm Development for Prediction of Smoke Spread Distance Based on Deep Learning (딥러닝 기반의 연기 확산거리 예측을 위한 알고리즘 개발 기초연구)

  • This is a basic study on the development of deep learning-based algorithms to detect smoke before the smoke detector operates in the event of a ship fire, analyze and utilize the detected data, and support fire suppression and evacuation activities by predicting the spread of smoke before it spreads to remote areas. Proposed algorithms were reviewed in accordance with the following procedures. As a first step, smoke images obtained through fire simulation were applied to the YOLO (You Only Look Once) model, which is a deep learning-based object detection algorithm. The mean average precision (mAP) of the trained YOLO model was measured to be 98.71%, and smoke was detected at a processing speed of 9 frames per second (FPS). The second step was to estimate the spread of smoke using the coordinates of the boundary box, from which was utilized to extract the smoke geometry from YOLO. This smoke geometry was then applied to the time series prediction algorithm, long short-term memory (LSTM). As a result, smoke spread data obtained from the coordinates of the boundary box between the estimated fire occurrence and 30 s were entered into the LSTM learning model to predict smoke spread data from 31 s to 90 s in the smoke image of a fast fire obtained from fire simulation. The average square root error between the estimated spread of smoke and its predicted value was 2.74.
