  • A ship runs with various modes of motion due to waves. Among the modes, roll mainly influences on the safety of cargos and crew's fatigue. Therefore a ship equipped with anti-rolling devices are on an increasing trend. In this research, we developed a free running model ship to evaluate the performances of fin stabilizer and moving weight stabilizer. Also those performance tests were carried out through the proposed test procedure.

  • In this paper, PLC which can be installed easily and is stable to transfer datum, is tested for approving its application in a real ship. Internet access service, CCTV monitoring, light control and huge sensor communications are needed for enhancing the convenience and safety of passengers and crew in ships. In order to apply PLC in ships, we surveyed some noises interrupting PLC in ships and investigated the PLC characteristics. The Hannara, a training ship of Korea Maritime University, was used for the test. We measured and analyzed blocking noises using by NI's SCXI-1001. When noises of specific frequency band occurred near the PLC frequency band, PLC transfer capacity was low for mass datum. We developed and verified some methods to apply PLC in a ship under lots of noises.

  • On January 13th 2012 Italian flag Costa Concordia was partly sunk. The ship was carrying 4,252 passengers and crew; in the next few days the bodies of 30 people were found. Two are still missing. Two South Korean passengers and an Italian crew member was rescued from the ship on January 15th, more than 24 hours after the accident. As of June 18th 2012 (The date of presentation) around 32 people had not been accounted for. In this paper, it is viewed and pointed out the cause, problem, and implication for the future. As a result, intelligent innovative evacuation system for the VLPS (Very Large Passenger Ship) should be set up in terms of international maritime safety.

  • Recently, the increased use of anti-ship guided missiles, a weapon system that detects and attacks targets in naval engagement, has come to pose a major threat to the survivability of ships. In order to improve the survivability of ships in response to such anti-ship guided missiles, many studies of means to counteract them have been conducted in militarily advanced countries. The integrated survivability of a ship can be largely divided into susceptibility, vulnerability, and recoverability, and is expressed as the conditional probability, if the ship is hit, of damage and recovery. However, as research on susceptibility is a major military secret of each country, access to it is very limited and there are few publicly available data. Therefore, in this study, a possibility of estimating the susceptibility of ships using an anti-air defense system corresponding to anti-ship guided missiles was reviewed. To this, scenarios during engagement, weapon systems mounted to counter threats, and maximum detection/battle range according to the operational situation of the defense weapon system were defined. In addition, the effectiveness of the anti-air defense system and susceptibility was calculated based on the performance of the weapon system, the crew's ability to operate the weapon system, and the detection probability of the detection/defense system. To evaluate the susceptibility estimation feasibility, the sensitivity of the detailed variables was reviewed, and the usefulness of the established process was confirmed through sensitivity analysis.

  • Land fire receives additional extinguishing methods easily by professional extinguisher. But because of isolation and independence from land when sailing on the sea, ships are difficult to get special help from land. Generally, the death ratio by suffocation is higher than the death rate by flame and to reduce suffocation death ratio, fast evacuation is required. This paper aims to improve survival ratio at ship fires by soot density reduction. This study examines soot density and visibility using FDS. And also examines evacuation time by Pathfinder. The FDS(Fire Dynamic Simulator) is a 3 zone model(Field Model) analysis tool and the patherfinder is a useful analysis tool for evacuation. This research examined about evacuation time using the current regulations of the ship's corridor width and exit width first. And then studied evacuation time again when ship's structure was changed according to the method that is proposed in this paper. And finally compared the results each other.

  • The functions of various systems inside the naval ships have been improved and diversified to prepare for the future battlefield and satisfy new requirements. The number of missions and operating displays with which a crew has to deal has increased. In this paper, Integrated Service Framework for Naval Ships is proposed. The proposed framework is based on REST architecture and it interfaces the networks of each systems in the ship. The connected data and functions are rebuilt as an object and they are provided as HTTP and JSON based APIs. The prototype of the framework was implemented in a combat system test-bed and its feasibility was proved with performance tests. With the proposed framework, operational efficiency for a naval ship can be achieved by designing new integrated displays and HCI which utilize whole ship's capabilities.

  • Wave exciting force and moment generate the motions of a ship in waves. Since ship motion exerts the negative influences on a crew's operability, the safety of cargos, passenger's comfort, etc, the anti-rolling devices may be required to reduce such motion In this paper, the dynamics of the anti-rolling devices such as passive and active moving weight stabilizer and anti-rolling tank, and fin stabilizer are mathematically modeled While the effect of the motion of the anti-rolling device on a ship was taken into consideration in roll mode only in the past, the 6 DOF coupled equations of motion between a ship and the anti-rolling devices are constituted Finally the motion of a ship with anti-rolling devices in waves is simulated through the developed simulation program.

  • As the number of sensors in a ship has increased, studies have been actively conducted to efficiently manage a large amount of data. Sensors in a ship follow the NMEA (National Marine Electronics Association) data format. In particular, NMEA0183 standardized as IEC 61162-1 and NMEA2000 standardized as IEC 61162-3 are widely used. NMEA0183 is a protocol based on serial communication and NMEA2000 is a protocol based on CAN (Controller Area Network) communication. We implemented a gateway that receives data from NMEA0183 sensors and NMEA2000 sensors and then transmits them to the server on TCP/IP network. By using the NMEA2000 0183/2000 gateway to receive the sensor data and manage it through the ship's preventive maintenance system, the sensor data can be utilized efficiently and promptly. This management can reduce crew's daily tasks and reduce the number of accidents.

  • Reduction of a ship's rolling is the most important performance requirement for improving the safety of the crew on board and preventing damage to cargos as well as improving the comfort of the ride. A mass driving anti-rolling system (MO-ARS) might be one candidate of several systems against the ship's rolling. In this paper, three types of MD-ARS, two passive and one active devices, are developed for small ships. After they are installed on the cabin of the small leisure boat, respectively, a series of performance test is conducted before and after operating them. Through the test, it is confirmed that the roll responses of the ship are pretty well reduced by the MO-ARS.
