Background: Gamma-ray detectors having a thin window of a material with low atomic number can increase the true coincidence summing effects for radionuclides emitting X-rays or gamma-rays. This effect can make efficiency calibration or spectrum analysis more complicated. In this study, a Cu shield was tested as an X-ray filter to neglect the true coincidence summing effect by X-rays and gamma-rays in gamma-ray spectrometry, in order to simplify gamma-ray energy spectrum analysis. Materials and Methods: A Cu shield was designed and applied to an n-type high-purity germanium detector having an $X-{\gamma}$ summing effect during efficiency calibration. This was tested using a commercial, certified mixed gamma-ray source. The feasibility of a Cu shield was evaluated by comparing efficiency calibration results with and without the shield. Results and Discussion: In this study, the thickness of a Cu shield needed to avoid true coincidence summing effects due to $X-{\gamma}$ was tested and determined to be 1 mm, considering the detection efficiency desired for higher energy. As a result, the accuracy of the detection efficiency calibration was improved by more than 13% by reducing $X-{\gamma}$ summing. Conclusion: The $X-{\gamma}$ summing effect should be considered, along with ${\gamma}-{\gamma}$ summing, when a detection efficiency calibration is implemented and appropriate shielding material can be useful for simplifying analysis of the gamma-ray energy spectra.
This paper introduces a novel concept of the pulsed neutron facility (PNF) for maximizing the production of the thermal neutrons and its application to medical use based on prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) using Monte Carlo simulations. The PNF consists of a compact D-T neutron generator, a graphite pile, and a detection system using Cadmium telluride (CdTe) detector arrays. The configuration of fuel pins in the graphite monolith and the design and materials for the moderating layer were studied to optimize the thermal neutron yields. Biological samples - normal and cancerous breast tissues - including chlorine, a trace element, were used to investigate the sensitivity of the characteristic γ-rays by neutron-trace material interactions and the detector responses of multiple particles. Around 90 % of neutrons emitted from a deuterium-tritium (D-T) neutron generator thermalized as they passed through the graphite stockpile. The thermal neutrons captured the chlorines in the samples, then the characteristic γ-rays with specific energy levels of 6.12, 7.80 and 8.58 MeV were emitted. Since the concentration of chlorine in the cancerous tissue is twice that in the normal tissue, the count ratio of the characteristic g-rays of the cancerous tissue over the normal tissue is approximately 2.
The penetration potential of TIG welding in one single run is limited, though the process itself generates high quality welds with good weld cosmetics. This is one of the main reasons, which has contributed to its development in high duty applications such as those encountered in aeronautical, aerospace, nuclear & power plant applications. For these applications, stainless steels, titanium k nickel based alloys are most often used. As these materials remain very sensible to weld heat input k atmospheric pollution, stringent processing conditions are imposed. For example welding of titanium alloys requires argon shielding of weld zone and for 5 mm thick plates multi-pass runs & filler additions are required. This multi-run operation not only raises the welding cost, but also increases defect risks. In recent years, extensive interest has been raised by the possibility to increase weld penetrations through flux applications & the process is designated ATIG-activated TIG, or FBTIG-flux bounded TIG. The improved welding performance of such flux assisted TIG is related to arc constriction and surface tension effects on weld pool. The research work by authors has lead to the formulation of welding fluxes for stainless steels k titanium alloys with TIG Process. These fluxes are now commercialized & some applications in industry have already been carried out. FBTIG for aluminum has been proposed with silica application for AC mode TIG welding. The paper highlights the fundamentals of flux role in TIG welding and illustrates some industrial applications.

In this paper, finite element analyses were used to estimate the strain distribution at the fracture site of a tibia bone. A stainless steel bone plate and various composite bone plates were considered to find out the best conditions for callus generation while bone fracture was cured for 16 weeks. Through this research, the appropriate load condition which makes the strains between the appropriate range($2{\sim}10%$) was sought. From this analysis, it was found that lower level of external load is needed for the appropriate strain for the case of composite bone plate application and it was also found that the composite bone plate had potential advantages for effective bone fracture healing relieved stress shielding effect.

The combination of MCNP6 and the FISPACT codes was used to predict inventories of radioisotopes produced by neutron exposure of a sample in a research reactor. The detailed MCNP6 model of the Budapest Research Reactor and the specific irradiation geometry of the NAA channel was established, while realistic material cards were specified based on concentrations measured by PGAA and NAA, considering the precursor elements of all significant radioisotopes. The energy- and spatial distributions of the neutron field calculated by MCNP6 were transferred to FISPACT, and the resulting activities were validated against those measured using neutron-irradiated small and bulky targets. This approach is general enough to handle different target materials, shapes, and irradiation conditions. A general agreement within 10% has been achieved. Moreover, the method can also be made applicable to predict the activation properties of the near-vessel concrete of existing nuclear installations or assist in the optimal construction of new nuclear power plant units.

Steel doors, which are common in general buildings, do not seal the gap between the door and the floor, so drafts, noise, dust, and lights flow from the outside, and shielding devices are installed in various materials and methods, such as adding magnetic gate paper to the side of the door or installing a gasket under the door, but performance is limited. Accordingly, in order to fundamentally solve these problems, we researched and developed a double gap blocking device that can improve fire resistance and airtightness performance in steel doors. Unlike general products, the double gap blocking device has the advantage of maximizing airtight performance by forming an air layer in the center when the door is closed, as well as greatly improving the fire resistance performance, which is the basic performance of the fire door.
NECP-SARAX is a neutronics analysis code system for advanced reactor developed by Nuclear Engineering Computational Physics Laboratory of Xi'an Jiaotong University. In past few years, improvements have been implemented in TULIP code which is the cross-section generation module of NECP-SARAX, including the treatment of resonance interface, considering the self-shielding effect in non-resonance energy range, hyperfine group method and nuclear library with thermal scattering law. Previous studies show that NECP-SARAX has high performance in both fast and thermal spectrum system analysis. The accuracy of TULIP code in fast and thermal spectrum system analysis is demonstrated preliminarily. However, a systematic verification and validation is still necessary. In order to validate the applicability of TULIP code for full energy range, 147 fast spectrum critical experiment benchmarks and 170 thermal spectrum critical experiment benchmarks were selected from ICSBEP and used for analysis. The keff bias between TULIP code and reference value is less than 300 pcm for all fast spectrum benchmarks. And that bias keeps within 200 pcm for thermal spectrum benchmarks with neutron-moderating materials such as polyethylene, beryllium oxide, etc. The numerical results indicate that TULIP code has good performance for the analysis of fast and thermal spectrum system.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mandates safeguards to ensure non-proliferation of nuclear materials. Among inspection techniques used to detect partial defects within spent nuclear fuel (SNF), gamma emission tomography (GET) has been reported to be reliable for detection of partial defects on a pin-by-pin level. Conventional GET, however, is limited by low detection efficiency due to the high density of nuclear fuel rods and self-absorption. This paper proposes a new type of GET named Spent Fuel Internal Tomography (SFIT), which can acquire sinograms at the guide tube. The proposed device consists of the housing, shielding, C-shaped collimator, reflector, and gadolinium aluminum gallium garnet (GAGG) scintillator. For accurate attenuation correction, the source-distinguishable range of the SFIT device was determined using MC simulation to the region away from the proposed device to the second layer. For enhanced inspection accuracy, a proposed specific source-discrimination algorithm was applied. With this, the SFIT device successfully distinguished all source locations. The comparison of images of the existing and proposed inspection methods showed that the proposed method, having successfully distinguished all sources, afforded a 150 % inspection accuracy improvement.
Reflection properties of $SiO_2$/ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) thin films coated for electromagnetic shielding, anti-static and anti-reflection on the front surface in CRT were studied. The behavior of reflectance as a function of thickness of $SiO_2$/ITO was investigated and applied to theoretical anti0reflection model of double layers and three layers. As the thickness of ITO layer increased, the deviation from theoretical value increased because uniformity of film deteriorated by pore. Because of the effect of mixed layer of $SiO_2$ and ITO, experimental reflectance showed better acceptance to the three layer antireflection model of $SiO_2$/$SiO_2$+ITO/ITO than the two layer model. Based on the theoretical antireflection design, the double layer whose thickness of $SiO_2$ and ITO were 90, 65 nm, respectively appear 2.5% in reflectance at standard wavelength, 550 nm. This phenomenon was similar to theoretical reflectance in visual range.
To evaluate the development of the microstructure and mechanical properties on surface modified and post-heattreated Inconel 718 alloy, this study was carried out. A friction stir process as a surface modification method was employed, and overlap welded Inconel 718 alloy as an experimental material was selected. The friction stir process was carried out at a tool rotation speed of 200 rpm and tool down force of 19.6-39.2 kN; post-heat-treatment with two steps was carried out at $720^{\circ}C$ for 8 h and $620^{\circ}C$ for 6 h in vacuum. To prevent the surface oxidation of the specimen, the method of using argon gas as shielding was utilized during the friction stir process. As a result, applying the friction stir process was effective to develop the grain refinement accompanied by dynamic recrystallization, which resulted in enhanced mechanical properties as compared to the overlap welded material. Furthermore, the post-heat-treatment after the friction stir process accelerated the formation of precipitates, such as gamma prime (${\gamma}^{\prime}$) and MC carbides, which led to the significant improvement of mechanical properties. Consequently, the microhardness, yield, and tensile strengths of the post-heat-treated material were increased more than 110%, 124% and 85 %, respectively, relative to the overlap welded material. This study systematically examined the relationship between precipitates and mechanical properties.
