In this study, a machine learning method was proposed to use in predicting optimal replacement period of shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) disc cutter. To do this, a large dataset of ground condition, disc cutter replacement records and TBM excavation-related data, collected from a shield TBM tunnel site in Korea, was built and they were used to construct a disc cutter replacement period prediction model using a machine learning algorithm, SVM (Support Vector Machine) and to assess the performance of the model. The results showed that the performance of RBF (Radial Basis Function) SVM is the best among a total of three SVM classification functions (80% accuracy and 10% error rate on average). When compared between ground types, the more disc cutter replacement data existed, the better prediction results were obtained. From this results, it is expected that machine learning methods become very popularly used in practice in near future as more data is accumulated and the machine learning models continue to be fine-tuned.

This study estimates tunnel face pressure through existing 8 analytical equations and 3D numerical analysis, and compares and examines it. In general, the estimating tunnel face pressure of domestic shield TBM has been examined by a method according to analytical equation and empirical method, but numerical analysis is combined in a section passing complicated stratigraphic condition and special soil condition. Therefore, the researcher is to find a reliable method to examine of tunnel face pressure by confirming a correlation between tunnel face pressure estimated by equation and tunnel face pressure estimated by numerical analysis program. When tunnel face pressure is estimated, both analytical equation and numerical analysis were identically examined in soil conditions such as sandy soil and cohesive soil. In addition, existing analytical equation is used as equation, and 3D analysis copying construction process and shield tunnel as numerical analysis.

The Discrete Element Method (DEM) is one of the useful numerical methods to analyze the behavior of the ground formation by computing the motion and interaction using particles. The DEM has not been applied in civil engineering but also a wide range of industrial fields, such as chemical engineering, pharmacy, material science, food engineering, etc. In this study, to review a performance of the spoke-type earth pressure balance (EPB) shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), the commercial software based on the DEM technology was used. An analysis of the TBM during excavation was conducted according to two pre-defined excavation conditions with the different rotation speed of a cutterhead. During the analysis, the resistant torque at the face of the cutterhead, the compressive force at the cutterhead and shield surface, the muck discharge at the screw auger were measured and compared. Upon the two kinds of excavation conditions, the applicability of the DEM analysis was reviewed as a modelling method for the TBM.
The construction of parallel tunnel by using the shield TBM method was increased recently. Accordingly the application and the propriety of the parallel shield TBM tunnels were studied through domestic and foreign construction cases herein. Also the behavior of tunnel structure and ground was evaluated by a numerical analysis with various ground conditions and the distance between the parallel tunnels. As a result, it was concluded that a deep investigation as well as a ground reinforcement was required with a ratio(L/D) of the distance between the parallel tunnels(L) to tunnel outer diameter(D) less than 0.5 because the Interference phenomenon was expected to occur. And the appropriateness of the application method of parallel shield TBM tunnel was validated through the 2-dimensional numerical analysis simulated the process of excavation after the ground reinforcement in the starting area of the OOO construction site with the ratio(L/D) of 0.35.

Doosan Construction & Engineering Co., Ltd is building a railway tunnel beneath the Soo-Young River connecting MinLak Station and Centum City Station, a section 230, subway line 2, Pusan City, Korea. When completed the tunnel will have a finished inner diameter of 6.5m(21.311) throughout its total length of 840m(420m = 0.52 miles, Two Single Track Tunnel : 420m+420m). The ground profile of the face toward shield machine is composed of multi layers, silty clay, clayey gravel, soft rock etc. This research paper is to predict ground deformation and variation of stresses around tunnel using Hyperbolic model, and to reflect the works on the next shield tunneling project. And this research paper is analyzed data of measuring instrument (such as settlement gauge, inclinometer, Multiple extensometer, etc.) which is installed along tunnel line for safety of tunnel. For calculations, the finite difference Method is applied. Backfill grouting material is supposed to have instantly strength of 10kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ above, although its strength is available after 24 hours passed.

TBM tunnel is simple with the iterative process of excavating the ground, building a segment ring-build, and backfilling. Drill & Blast, a conventional tunnel construction method, is more complicated than the TBM tunnel and has some restrictions because it repeats the inspection, drilling, charging, blasting, ventilation, muck treatment, and installation of support materials. However, the preparation work for excavation requires time and cost based on a very detailed plan compared to Drill & Blasting, which reinforces the ground and forms a tunnel after the formation of tunnel portal. This is because the TBM equipment for excavating the target ground determines the success or failure of the construction. If the TBM, an expensive order-made equipment, is incorrectly configured at the assembly stage, it becomes difficult to excavate from the initial stage as well as the main excavation stage. When the assembled shield TBM equipment is dismantled again, and a situation of re-assembly occurs, it is difficult throughout the construction period due to economic loss as well as time. Therefore, in this study, the layout and plan of the site and the assembly process for each major part of the TBM equipment were reviewed for the assembly of slurry shield TBM to construct the largest diameter road tunnel in domestic passing through the Han River and minimized interference with other processes and the efficiency of cutter head assembly and transport were analyzed and improved to suit the site conditions.
Non-excavation method is needed to secure the stability of existing structures during construction. Therefore, prediction of ground settlement is essential. Causes of settlement when using steel pipe indentation method are leading pipe-steel pipe gap, excessive excavation and soil-steel pipe friction etc. Also they are similar to the causes of settlement when using Shield TBM during construction. In this study, ground settlement during steel pipe indentation is predicted by the Gap Parameter Method and Volume Loss Method which are kinds of Shield TBM prediction Method. and compared with those of prediction methods by conducting field test. As a result, Volume Loss Prediction Method is the most similar to the field tests. However, It is needed to additional studies, such as decision of the factors and adaptability for total settlement predictions of non-excavation method.

Interest in building underground spaces is increasing for the creation of downtown infrastructure and efficient space utilization. A representative method of utilizing underground space is a tunnel, and in addition to road tunnels, the construction of utility tunnels such as power conduits and utility conduits is gradually increasing. The current basic tunnel construction method can be divided into NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) and TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine). The NATM is a reliable method, but it is accompanied by vibration and noise due to blasting. In the case of the TBM excavation method, there are disadvantages in terms of construction period and construction cost, but it is possible to improve economic feasibility by introducing appropriate complementary methods. In this study, a blasting method was develop using the NATM after TBM pre-excavation using the protective shield method. This is a method that compensates for the disadvantages of each tunnel construction method, and is expected to reduce construction costs, blasting vibration, and noise. In order to review the performance of the developed method, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of explosion-proof tube to which a protective shield scale model was applied, and the impact of blasting vibration of the protective shield method was analyzed.
Tunnel site where high water pressure is applied, such as subsea tunnel, generally selects the shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) to maintain the tunnel excavation face. The shield TBM has cutters installed, and the cutters wear out during the process of excavation, so it should be checked and replaced regularly. This is called CHI (Cutterhead Intervention). The conventional CHI under high water pressure is very disadvantageous in terms of safety and economics because humans perform work in response to high water pressure and huge water inflow in the chamber. To overcome this disadvantage, this study proposes a new method to dramatically reduce water pressure and water ingress by injecting an appropriate grout solution into the front of the tunnel face through the shield TBM chamber, called New Face Grouting Method (NFGM). The tunnel model tests were performed to determine the characteristics, injection volume, and curing time of grout solution to be applied to the NFGM. Model test apparatus was composed of a pressure soil tank, a model shield TBM, a grout tank, and an air compressor to measure the amount of water inflow into the chamber. The model tests were conducted by changing the injection amount of the grout solution, the curing time after the grout injection, and the water/cement ratio of grout solution. From an economic point of view, the results showed that the injection volume of 1.0 L, curing time of 6 hours, and water/cement ratio of the grout solution between 1.5 and 2.0 are the most economical. It can be concluded that this study has presented a method to economically perform the CHI under the high water pressure.

In urban tunnel construction, most of the Shield TBM method is applied to secure the safety of buildings and to minimize risks. On the other hand, in the urban development process, landfills are often embanked or improving in many cases, so that the boundary between the surface and the rock is often heterogeneous. In case of ground condition such as alluvial soil, granite, decomposed granite, core stone and rock with various layers, datas on shield TBM advancing according to each ground condition are analyzed, The characteristics of machine load were compared and analyzed. As a result, it can be predicted that the change of ground condition can be predicted by the tendency of discharge volume, thrust force and cutting wheel torque when the cutter is checked and replaced regularly on advancing under maintaining the design slurry pressure.
