Seismic Performance Evaluation of School Buildings in Gyunggi Region Considering Seismic Hazard Map (상세재해지도를 고려한 경기지역 학교건축물의 내진성능평가)

  • Since the school buildings are generally used as public shelters when the natural disasters such as flood and earthquake occur, it must be designed to show enough structural performance when subject to earthquake. Major failure mode of the school buildings observed in past earthquakes were shear failure of column of which length is shortened by infilled masonry blocks. In this study, the seismic risk of the reinforced concrete school building structure was evaluated by using the seismic performance evaluation methods of low-story RC structures developed in Japan and the required seismic performance index which is obtained according to the KBC2008 seismic hazard map and soil types. In this paper, the seismic performance of the school building is evaluated by considering this short-column effects, building shape and deterioration.

  • Many school buildings are not applied seismic code because of small size structures. But it must be designed to show enough structural performance when subject to earthquake due to the fact that most of school buildings are generally used as public shelters when the natural disasters. In this study, the seismic risk of the reinforced concrete school building structure which is the most common types of school structures was evaluated by using the seismic performance evaluation methods. As a result, model structures don't have enough seismic performance.

  • Tsunami forces acting on coastal structures have not been relatively much paid attention by researchers. However, they should be appropriately reflected in design of coastal and harbor facilities. The temporary and permanent tsunami shelters have to be chosen to resist stably against unexpected tsunami forces. There have been only few numerical studies on the tsunami forces acting on coastal and harbor structures. In this study, a practical prediction of tsunami forces is carried out by using a two-dimensional numerical model.

  • In order to mitigate the damage caused by accidents in nuclear power plants (NPPs), evacuation strategies are usually managed on the basis of off-site effects such as the diffusion of radioactive materials and evacuee traffic simulations. However, the interactive behavior between evacuees and the accident environment has a significant effect on the consequential gap. Agent-based modeling (ABM) is a method that can control and observe such interactions by establishing agents (i.e., the evacuees) and patches (i.e., the accident environments). In this paper, a radiological emergency evacuation model is constructed to realistically check the effectiveness of an evacuation strategy using NetLogo, an ABM toolbox. Geographic layers such as radiation sources, roads, buildings, and shelters were downloaded from an official geographic information system (GIS) of Korea, and were modified into respective patches. The dispersion model adopted from the puff equation was also modified to fit the patches on the geographic layer. The evacuees were defined as vehicle agents and a traffic model was implemented by combining the shortest path search (determined by an A * algorithm) and a traffic flow model incorporated in the Nagel-Schreckenberg cellular automata model. To evaluate the radiological harm to the evacuees due to the spread of radioactive materials, a simple exposure model was established to calculate the overlap fraction between the agents and the dispersion patches. This paper aims to demonstrate that the potential of ABM can handle disaster evacuation strategies more realistically than previous approaches.

Adoption Factor Prediction to Prevent Euthanasia Based on Artificial Intelligence

  • In this paper, we analyzed the factors of adoption and implemented a predictive model to activate the adoption of animals. Recently, animal shelters are saturated due to the abandonment and loss of companion animals. To address this, we need to find a way to encourage adoption. In this paper, a study was conducted using two data from an open data portal provided by Austin, Texas. First, a correlation analysis was conducted to identify the attributes that affect the result value, and it was found that Animal Type Intake, Intake Type, and Age upon Outcome influence the Outcome Type with correlation coefficients of 0.4, 0.26, and -0.2, respectively. For these attributes, the analysis was conducted using Multiclass Logistic Regression. As a result, dogs had a higher probability of Adoption than cats, and animals subjected to euthanasia were more likely to adopt. In the case of Public Assist and Stray, it was found that the Missing rate was high. Also, the length of stay for cats increased to 12.5 years of age, while dogs generally adopted smoothly at all ages. These results showed an overall accuracy of 62.7% and an average accuracy of 91.7%, showing a fairly reliable result. Therefore, it seems that it can be used to develop a plan to promote the adoption of animals according to various factors. Also, it can be expanded to various services by interlocking with the webserver.

  • After the Gyeongju earthquake, school buildings were designated as earthquake shelters. However, the ratio of designed for seismic of domestic school buildings is only 23.2% in Korea, and it is necessary to secure the seismic safety of those. Therefore, in this paper, a target building was selected before the seismic design criteria was established and the seismic performance of the building was evaluated. After the evaluation, reinforcement of the building was carried out using seismic retrofit systems which was previously tested. For this purpose, the evaluation was carried out using OpenSees program and the reliability of the seismic retrofit systems was also verified. In this way, we can more precisely reproduce the response of the building in case of actual earthquake and predict damage of the earthquake in the future.

Applying a big data analysis to evaluate the suitability of shelter locations for the evacuation of residents in case of radiological emergencies

  • During a nuclear power plant (NPP) accident, radioactive material may be released into the surrounding environment in the form of a radioactive plume. The behavior of the radioactive plume is influenced by meteorological factors such as wind direction and speed. If the residents are evacuated to a shelter in the direction of the flow of the radioactive plume, the radiation exposure of the residents may increase, contrary to the purpose of the evacuation. To avoid such an undesirable outcome, this paper applies a big data analysis to evaluate the suitability of the shelter locations near 5 NPPs in the Republic of Korea in terms of the seasonal wind direction frequency in those areas. To this end, the wind data measured around the NPPs from 2016 to 2020 were analyzed to derive the seasonal wind direction frequency using a big data analysis. These analyses results were then used to determine how many shelters around NPPs locate in areas with prevailing wind direction per season. Then, suggestions were made on the direction for residents not to evacuate, if possible, that is, the prevailing seasonal wind directions for 5 NPPs, depending on the season in which the accident occurs.

  • Hurricanes and tornadoes are the most destructive natural disasters in some central and southern states. Thus, storm shelters, which can provide emergency protections for low-rise building residents, are becoming popular nowadays. Both FEMA and ICC have published a series of manuals on storm shelter design. However, the authors found that the materials for related products in the market are heavyweight and hard to deliver and install; renovations are necessary. The authors' previous studies found that lightweight and high-performance composite materials can withstand extreme wind pressure, but some building codes are designated in wind-borne debris areas. In these areas, wind debris can reach greater than 100 mph speed. In addition, the impact damage on the composite materials is an increasing safety issue in many engineering fields; some can cause catastrophic results. Therefore, studying composite structures subjected to wind debris impact is essential. The finite element models are set up using the software Abaqus 2.0 to conduct the simulations to observe the impact resistance behavior of the carbon fiber composite sandwich panels. The selected wood debris models meet the FEMA requirements. The outcome of this study is then employed in future lab tests and compared with other material models.

Analysis of the needs of forest healing facilities for female cancer survivors

  • This study was conducted to identify the appropriate space requirements for forest healing program for physical and mental health care of female cancer survivors in their 40s and 60s. From September to November 2023, 12 cancer survivors were surveyed at Chungnam National University Forest and Daejeon Healing Forest. One Forest Therapy instructor and two researchers conducted a forest healing program once a week for eight sessions of two hours each, Perceptions and satisfaction with the program and space were assessed using pre and post program questionnaires, and the effect of participation in the forest healing program on mood status was evaluated. The satisfaction survey results were supplemented by qualitative studies conducted through post-interviews. Result of the analysis showed that the satisfaction of the participants was very high (4.8/5.0). There was a notable increase in vigor and a decrease in total mood disturbance after participation in the program. Toilets and water facilities (11), tool boxes (9), pest control facilities (3), deck facilities (3), forest hut (3), electrical outlets (2), shade shelters (2), and shoe hairy (1) were proposed as required facilities for cancer survivors. This study demonstrated that the forest healing program is effective in reducing distress in female cancer survivors in their 40s and 60s and appropriate facility standards for the forest healing space are needed to increase the satisfaction of cancer survivors.

  • Purpose: This study describes how public health officials running clinic-centered around "Our Village's Pretty Dementia Shelter" improved their ability to cope with dementia and health by implementing early dementia screening and cognitive intervention programs. Methods: This study targeted 11 hopeful seniors from 6 villages, who were residents of the area under the jurisdiction of Health Clinic B located in County A, were over 65 years of age, and had not experienced Our Village's Pretty dementia shelters. Results: The results of the Cognitive Screening Test (CIST) showed that scores improved on all evaluation items and depression decreased. Through the dementia prevention program, health improved, vitality increased through leisure activities and cultural experiences in daily life, and the quality of life improved. Aadditionally, participating with close neighbors has become an activity that can make dementia prevention activities a habit and widespread practice. Conclusion: This case demonstrate the need for continued implementation of dementia prevention and health promotion programs for rural residents. Accordingly, it is necessary to continuously operate dementia prevention programs by diversifying them and securing expertise from rural nurses.
