  • In general, the curved structures have the engineering efficiency as well as a fine view compared with straight member. Also, composite materials are composed of two or more different materials to produce desirable properties for structural strength as compared to single ones. Shell structures with composite materials have many advantages in strength and weight reduction. Therefore, composite laminated conical shells are analyzed in this study. To solve differential equations of conical shells, this paper used finite difference method. Various parametric study according to the change of radius ratio, vertex angle and subtended angle are examined. The change of radius ratio, vertex angle and subtended angle mean the change from conical shells to cylindrical shells, conical shells to circular plates and open shells closed shells, respectively.

  • This is an experimental study on the maximum load value and structural behavior of reinforced concrete columns containing shells as a substitute fine aggregate of concrete, through making reinforced concrete test columns with shells. In this study, the main factors consist of the grain sizes and the percentage of substitution of shells to fine aggregate in two kinds of water cement ratio. The results of the study showed as followed. The maximum load value decreased with increased the rate of substitution about shells and as the grain size of shells became smaller, the load values of them were somewhat changed higher but it is important that we must consider absorption rate of shells sufficiently. If we have a proper water cement ratio in column productions containing the shells, we can meet the requirement of the percentage of substitution until 30%. The deflection and deformation properties of reinforced concrete columns with shells represented typical curves like that of normal reinforced concrete. But as the failture types, they are able to make some change without being out of the fundamental graph forms. After the analyzing structural behaviors and the properties of reinforced concrete test columns containing shells, the most excellent grain size of shells represented 3.0mm and less with taking uniformly, and the percentage of practicable substitution of them to fine aggregate was about 30%.

  • 1) As a result of compressive strength experiment, rupture compressive strength showed more increases in specimens of 15% and 20% of Cockle shells in those of non-mixture. Comparing compressive strength between no-mixed Specimens and Specimens of containing Cockle shells, Specimens containing Cockle shells showed higher strength in 60 days and 90 days of age, and as ark Cockle is contained and age is elapsed, compressive strength is also increased In addition, estimation of compressive strength by reactive hardness in concrete using Cockle shells as aggregate shows low reliability. 2) As a result of experimenting compressive strength after heating, Specimens containing Cockle shells and non-mixed Specimens showed similar strength at $200^{\circ}C$, but compressive strength was lowered as content of Cockle shells increased at over $400^{\circ}C$ and heating temperature was higher. It is because Cockle shells was fired by heat and then its adhesion and bonding capacity were lost. 3) To sum up the above experimental results, it is found that using splitted Cockle shells as aggregate for concrete by 10%~20% showed the same or higher compressive strength and shear strength as concretes using general aggregate and it can be used as substitute aggregate of concrete. It is considered that for future use of splitted Cockle shells as substitute concrete aggregate, continuous researches of its durability, applicability and economy are needed.

  • The structural behaviors of anisotropic laminated shells are quite different from that of isotropic shells, Also, the classical theory of shells based on neglecting transverse shear deformation is invalid for laminated shells. Thus, to obtain the more exact behavior of laminated shells, effects of shear deformation should be considered in the analysis. As the length of x-axis or y-axis is increase, the effects of transverse shear deformation are decrease because the stiffness for the axis according to the increasing of length is large gradually. In this paper, the governing equations for anisotropic laminated shallow shell including the effects of shear deformation are derived. And then, by using Navier's solutions for shallow shells having simple supported boundary, extensive numerical studies for anisotropic laminated shallow shells were made to investigate the effects of shear deformation for 3 typical shells. Also, static analysis is carried out for cross-ply laminated shells considering the effects of various geometrical parameters, e,g., the shallowness ratio, the thickness ratio and the ratio of a(length of x-axis)-to-b(length of y-axis). The results are compared with existed one and show good agreement.

  • Recently, many environmental problems occur due to the waste shells in South Korea. In case of oyster and cockle, utilizing waste shells to produce fertilizer once also, but due to sluggish consumption, production is no longer difficult. The stored amount of waste shells in the fertilizer manufacturing company is overfilled, and thus cannot accept any more of the waste shells. As a result, landfill and dumping of waste shells have become an increasingly environmental problems. In this research, the basic physical properties and interfacial bonding form of the mortar mixed with waste shells (manila clam, cockle, clam, sea mussel, oyster) were evaluated.

  • As a result of compressive strength, specimens having mixture rate of cockle shells of $15\%\;and\;20\%$ showed more increases of compressive strength than non-mixture specimens as age increases. Ductility capacity of specimens was higher in specimens mixing cockle shells than in specimens using general fine aggregates and specimen of $10\%$ of cockle shells was highest in ductility capacity. To sum up all experimental results, ductility capacity of specimen without shear reinforcement using mixture of cockle shell was higher than non-mixture specimen and it is considered that mixture of cockle shells up to $20\%$ as fine aggregate for concrete will be available. Continuous researches on durability, workability and economy of crushed cockle shells used for substitute fine aggregate of concrete will be needed.

  • In this paper, an analytical method for the Post-buckling response of cylindrical shells with spiral stiffeners surrounded by an elastic medium subjected to external pressure is presented. The proposed model is based on two parameters elastic foundation Winkler and Pasternak. The material properties of the shell and stiffeners are assumed to be continuously graded in the thickness direction. According to the Von Karman nonlinear equations and the classical plate theory of shells, strain-displacement relations are obtained. The smeared stiffeners technique and Galerkin method is used to solve the nonlinear problem. To valid the formulations, comparisons are made with the available solutions for nonlinear static buckling of stiffened homogeneous and un-stiffened FGM cylindrical shells. The obtained results show the elastic foundation Winkler on the response of buckling is more effective than the elastic foundation Pasternak. Also the ceramic shells buckling strength higher than the metal shells and minimum critical buckling load is occurred, when both of the stiffeners have angle of thirty degrees.

  • A theoretical formulation for the analysis of free vibration of clamped-free cylindrical shells with plates attached at arbitrary axial position(s) was completed and it was programed to get the numerical results which yield natural frequencies and mode shape of the combined system of the plate and the shells. The frequencies and mode shapes from theoretical calculation were compared with those of commercial finite element code, ANSYS. In order to validate the theory, modal test was also performed by impact test and FFT analysis. The results shows good agreement with those of ANSYS and test results in frequencies and mode shapes. The method developed herein is likely to be used for the analysis of the free vibration of the clamped-free circular cylindrical shells with any kinds of lids such as hollow circular plates, conical shells, spherical shells, or semi-spherical shells.

  • In this study, the authors present an analytical approach to find the axisymmetric buckling load of two joined isotropic conical shells under axial compression. The problem of two joined conical shells may be considered as the generalized form of joined cylindrical and conical shells with constant or stepped thicknesses. Thickness of each cone is constant; however it may be different from the thickness of the other cone. The boundary conditions are assumed to be simply supported with rigid rings. The governing equations for the conical shells are obtained and solved with an analytical approach. A simple closed-form expression is obtained for the buckling load of two joined truncated conical shells. Results are compared and validated with the numerical results of finite element method. The variation of buckling load with changes in the thickness and semi-vertex angles of the two cones is studied. Finally, application of the results in practical design and range of engineering validity are investigated.
