  • Gasification of biomass produces syngas containing CO, $H_2$ and/or $CH_4$, which can then be converted into energy or value-added fuels. One of key issues for efficient gasification is to minimize tar concentration in the syngas for use in a final conversion device such as gas engine. This study investigated the decomposition of primary tar by catalytic cracking using char as catalyst, of which the feature can be integrated into a fixed bed gasifier design. The pyrolysis vapor containing tar from pyrolysis of wood at $500^{\circ}C$ was passed through a reactor filled with or without char at $800^{\circ}C$ for a residence time of 1, 3 or 5 sec. Then, the condensable vapor (water and tar) and gases were analyzed for the yields and elemental composition. Four types of char particles with different microscopic surface area and pore size distribution: wood, paddy straw, palm kernel shell and activated carbon. The results were analyzed for the mass and carbon yields of tar and the composition of product gases to conclude the effects of char types and residence time.

  • Magnetic and conducting aniline sulfide resin cross-linked (ASC-Fe3O4) nanocomposite has been prepared in the presence of aniline sulfide resin (ASR), aniline, $Fe_3O_4$ coated by polyethylene glycol (PEG) and initiator. The magnetic properties of the resulting composites showed ferromagnetic behavior, such as high-saturated magnetization (Ms= 41 emu/g), and coercive force (Hc=1.5 Oe). The saturated magnetization was increased by increasing of $Fe_3O_4$ content and decreased by increasing aniline ratio. The transmission electron micrograph (TEM) and X-ray diffraction proved that nanometer-sized about 20-30 nm $Fe_3O_4$ in the composite. The average size of ASC-$Fe_3O_4$ nanocomposite with core-shell structure was about 50-60 nm, and polydisperse. This approach may also be extended to the synthesis and modification of other polymers. Electrical conductivity of aniline sulfide resin cross-linked (ASC) nanocomposite has been studied by four-point probe method and produced $3.3{\times}10^{-4}S/cm$ conductivity for it. The conductivity of the composites at room temperature depended on the $Fe_3O_4$, aniline ratio and doping degree. The thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) results showed that this resin is thermal resistance near of $500^{\circ}C$. So, It can be used for resistance thermal coating for military applications. $Fe_3O_4$-PASC nanocomposite has been flexible structure with electrical and magnetic properties.

  • Background: Mussels are stubborn organisms attached to solid substrata by means of byssus threads. The abundance of marine mussel Mytilus edulis in marine facilities like power stations was reason to select among fouling animals. Methods: Mortality patterns as well as physiological behavior (oxygen consumption, foot activity, and byssus thread production) of two different size groups (14- and 25-mm shell length) of M. edulis were studied at different hydrogen peroxide concentrations ($1-4mg\;l^{-1}$). Results: Studied mussels showed progressive reduction in physiological activities as the hydrogen peroxide concentration increased. Mussel mortality was tested in 30 days exposure, and 14 mm mussels reached the highest percentage of 90% while 25 mm mussels reached 81%. Produced data was echoed by Chick-Watson model extracted equation. Conclusions: This study points that, while it could affect the mussel mortality moderately in its low concentrations, hydrogen peroxide has a strong influence on mussels' physiological activities related to colonization. Therefore, hydrogen peroxide can be an alternative for preventing mussel colonization on facilities of marine environment.

  • This paper develops a finite element model for crashworthiness analysis ova small-sized bus. The full vehicle finite element model is composed of 31,982 shell elements,599 beam elements,42 bar elements, and 34,204 nodes. The model uses four material models (such as elastic, elastic-plastic(steel), rigid. and elastic-plastic (rubber) material model) of PAM-CRASH. The model uses four contact types to define sliding interfaces in ten areas. A frontal crash test using an actual vehicle with 30mph velocity to a rigid barrier is carried out. Vehicle pulses at lower part of left and right b-pillar are measured, and deformed shapes of frame and driver seat's lower left area are photographed. A frontal crash simulation using the developed full vehicle finite element model is performed with PAM-CRASH installed in super computer SP2. The simulation is performed with the same conditions as the test. The measured vehicle pulses and photographed deformed shapes from the test are compared to ones from the simulation to validate the reliability of the developed model.

  • It was intended to investigate that how hardness of chestnut shell affects the flame peeling characteristics of Korean Chestnut. Effects of the hardness on the flame peeling characteristics need to be found to establish the optimum drying conditions for chestnut of various cultivars, sizes and harvested years. The equation based on the hardness of the chestnut shells was developed. It was found that the flame peeling characteristics of the corresponding to the various drying conditions did not differ significantly to the groups with the same hardness. The flame peeling characteristics of the chestnut with the same hardness were not influenced by cultivars, size, and harvested year, The peeling ratio and the heating depth were increased by decrease of the hardness of the chestnut shells. On the other hand, the peeling ratio and the heating depth were increased as the flame temperature was increased with the same hardness. When the heating depth was limited to 2.1 mm regarding the process characteristics and the damage ratio, the proper hardness and peeling ratio of chestnut shells were 1,369.8 g/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 83.9%, respectively, at the flame temperature of $700^{\circ}C$. And also 1,517.7 g/$\textrm{mm}^2$ and 80.7% at 75$0^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, several kinds of active carbons with high specific surface area and micro pore structure were prepared from the coconut shell charcoal using chemical activation method. The physical property of prepared active carbon was investigated by experimental variables such as activating chemical agents to char coal ratio, flow rate of inert gas and temperature. It was shown that chemical activation with KOH and NaOH was successfully able to make active carbons with high surface area of $1900{\sim}2500m^2/g$ and mean pore size of 1.85~2.32 nm. The coin cell using water-based binder in the electrolyte of LiPF6 dissolved in mixed organic solvents (EC:DMC:EMC=1:1:1 vol%) showed better capacity than that of oil-based binder. Also, it was found that the coin cell of water-based binder shows an improved cycling performance and coulombic efficiency.

  • Block copolymer micelles are generally formed via the self-assembly of amphiphilic block copolymers in an aqueous medium. The hydrophilic and hydrophobic blocks form shell and core micelles, respectively. The block copolymers of methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG)-b-poly(2-diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (PDPA) were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization, with the macro initiator synthesized by the coupling of 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide with MPEG in the presence of a triethyl amine base catalyst. The atom transfer radical polymerization of 2-diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate was performed in conjunction with an N,N,N',N",N"-pentamethyl-diethylenetriamine/copper bromide catalyst system, in DMF, at $70^{\circ}C$. The pH induced micellization/demicellization was studied using fluorescence, with a pyrene probe. Furthermore, the pH dependent micellization was confirmed using the microviscosity method, with a dipyme fluorescence probe. The pH dependant micelle size distribution was studied using dynamic light scattering. The characterization of the synthesized polymers was established using gel permeation chromatography and from the $^1H-nuclear$ magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

  • The genetic relationship was examined with PCR-RAPD markers among three scallop species, Chlamys farreri farreri, Patinopecten yessoensis, and Agropecten irradians. Six primers were selected from 60 primers used to compare PCR-RAPD profiles among species. All primers showed distinct RAPD band patterns between the three species. In Chiamys farreri farreri, the morphological characteristics such as shell size and color were considerably different between the two geographical populations. RAPD profile, however, showed that no significant genetic differences were found between the two geographical populations. Polymorphic alleles were observed within a population of each species. Thus, PCR-RAPD markers are useful in identifying scallop species and in understanding scallop population genetic structure.

  • The strain of Serratia marcescens QM B1466 produces selectively large amount of chitinolytic enzymes (about 1mg/L medium). Enzymatic hydrolysis of chitin to N-acetyl-${\beta}$-D-glucosamine (NAG) was performed with a system consisting of two hydrolases (chitinase and chitobiase) produced by optimization of a microbial host consuming chitin particles. For the development of Large-scale biological process for the production of NAG from chitinaceous waste, the selection and optimization of a microbial host, particle size of crab/shrimp chitin sources and initial induction time using chitin as a sole carbon source on chitinase/chitobiase production and NAG production were examined. Crab-shell chitin(1.5%) treated by dilute acid and , ball-milled with a normal diameter less than 250m gave the highest chitinase activity over a 7 days culture. Crude chitinase/ chitobiase solution obtained in a 10 L fed-batch fermentation showed a maximum activities of 23.6 U/mL and 5.1 U/mL, respectively with a feeding time of 3 hrs, near pH 8.5 at 30$^{\circ}C$.
