  • This paper describes the correlation between the interior noise and the trunk wall vibration. Using the vibro-acoustic reciprocity, effect of the trunk wall vibration on the compartment noise is investigated on a medium size car. In the low frequency range, vehicle interior noise is dominated by several acoustic modes of the passenger compartment and the vibration modes of the surrounding shell parts. Especially, vibration of the trunk wall radiates sound and it is transferred through holes on the package tray into the passenger compartment. This paper experimentally reveals that sound can be well produced at some particular vibration modes of the trunk lid and it strongly influences the compartment noise through package tray holes. Contributions of the trunk walls to the interior noise are estimated by measuring the acoustic-structural transfer function, based on the vibro-acoustical reciprocity theorem.

  • The Core Support Barrel (CSB) is a major component of Reactor Internals, and is designed to support and protect the Reactor Core. In this study, Reactor Core, Core Shroud and CSB were simplified to coaxial cylinders and then the offset of Reactor Core & Core Shroud to the dynamic characteristic of CSB was analyzed. For the beam modes, natural frequencies of the cantilevered cylinder are compared with those of the cantilevered beam. And it was found out that shear modulus must be used correctly to convert the shell model to the equivalent beam model. From the dynamic characteristics of the beam model, it was found out that natural frequencies are proportional to the length of Reactor Core & Core Shroud and inversely proportional to the mass. From the comparison with the dynamic characteristics of a beam model and a lumped-mass model it was found out that the size of lumped-mass must be determined considering both the length and the mass of Reactor Core & Core Shroud.

  • In this paper, free vibration analysis of a functionally graded cylindrical nanoshell resting on Pasternak foundation is presented based on the nonlocal elasticity theory. A two-dimensional formulation along the axial and radial directions is presented based on the first-order shear deformation shell theory. Hamilton's principle is employed for derivation of the governing equations of motion. The solution to formulated boundary value problem is obtained based on a harmonic solution and trigonometric functions for various boundary conditions. The numerical results show influence of significant parameters such as small scale parameter, stiffness of Pasternak foundation, mode number, various boundary conditions, and selected dimensionless geometric parameters on natural frequencies of nanoshell.

  • Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs) have been of great interest particularly in the automobile industries because of their high energy density and low pollutant emission. However, some of the issues such as, the necessarily high contents of Pt catalysts and their slow kinetics of cathode oxygen reduction reaction remain as obstacles in the commercialization of the PEMFC. In this presentation, after brief explanation on basic principles of PEMFC and its application to FC vehicles, recent researches to improve the activity and durability of Pt-based nano catalysts toward oxygen reduction will be introduced. It covers size and shape control of Pt nano particle, binary and ternary Pt-M alloys, novel core-shell nano structures of Pt, and a little bit about non-Pt catalysts. Strategies and methodologies for design and synthesis of novel catalysts will also be included.

  • The present paper employs nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT) to study buckling behavior of functionally graded magneto-electro-thermo-elastic (FG-METE) nanoshells under various physical fields. NSGT modeling of the nanoshell contains two size parameters, one related to nonlocal stress field and another related to strain gradients. It is considered that mechanical, thermal, electrical and magnetic loads are exerted to the nanoshell. Temperature field has uniform and linear variation in nanoshell thickness. According to a power-law function, piezo-magnetic, thermal and mechanical properties of the nanoshell are considered to be graded in thickness direction. Five coupled governing equations have been obtained by using Hamilton's principle and then solved implementing Galerkin's method. Influences of temperature field, electric voltage, magnetic potential, nonlocality, strain gradient parameter and FG material exponent on buckling loads of the FG-METE nanoshell have been studied in detail.

  • It is believed that active galactic nuclei (AGN) is powered by super massive black hole (SMBH). But how the AGN activity is triggered is still unclear. Some studies suggest that gas inflow by merging can trigger AGN activity. However, it is difficult to find observational evidence because merging features such as tidal tail, shell are faint. Using images taken at Maidanak 1.5m telescope and CFHT, we investigated whether merging features are seen commonly on AGN host galaxies. We found that 3 to 4 of the currently studied 6 AGN show features disturbed by gravitational interaction. This result implies that AGN activity may correlates with merging. We plan to expand the sample size in the near future.

  • Granular activated carbon is commonly used in fixed-bed adsorbers to remove organic chemicals. In this experiment organic chemical solutions were prepared by adding the reagent grade organic chemical to distilled water. Isotherm adsorption tests of volatile organic chemicals were conducted using bottle-point technique and column test. Organic chemicals after passing through the column were extracted with hexane and analyzed with gas chromatography (Hewlett-Packard 5890) to check the adsorption capacity and breakthrough curve. The result were as follows: 1. The BET surface area of coconut activated carbon was 658~1,010 m$^2$/g where as coconut shell carbon was 6.6 m$^2$/g. Coconut activated carbon increased the BET surface area and adsorption capacity in bottle-point isotherm. 2. The adsorption capacity of coconut activated carbon for trichloroethylene (TCE) was reduced in the presence of humic substance. 3. A decrease in particle size of activated carbon resulted in higher adsorption capacity and lower intraparticle diffusion coefficient. It is reflected not only as a decrease in Freudlich adsorption capacity value (K) but also as an increase in Freudlich exponenent value (1/n).

  • An aggregation multigrid method (AMM) is a leading iterative solver in solid mechanics. Recently, AMM is applied for solving Schur Complement system in the FE analysis of shell structures. In this work, an extended application of AMM for solving Schur Complement system in the FE analysis of continuum elements is presented. Further, the performance of the proposed AMM in multiple load cases, which is a challenging problem for an iterative solver, is studied. The proposed method is developed by combining the substructuring and the multigrid methods. The substructuring method avoids factorizing the full-size matrix of an original system and the multigrid method gives near-optimal convergence. This method is demonstrated for the FE analysis of several elastostatic problems. The numerical results show better performance by the proposed method as compared to the preconditioned conjugate gradient method. The smaller computational cost for the iterative procedure of the proposed method gives a good alternative to a direct solver in large systems with multiple load cases.

  • The selection factors of the protective clothing against the NBC agents are the protection(chemical, biological, TIMs), duration, weight/comfort, dexterity/mobility, size, visibility, cleaning and unit cost, etc. To develop the NBC protective clothing, we should need to review about the design concepts of the protective materials(shell and liner fabric) and form. This paper identify an important factors for the protective materials and form, and presents design strategies for important factors based on the evaluation results of the materials and the form.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of biochar by slow pyrolysis at $500^{\circ}C$ for various biomass residues. Six biomass materials were tested: Tree bark, Tree stem, bagasse, cocopeat, paddy straw and palm kernel shell. In the biochar yield, the effect of ash in the raw biomass was significant for paddy straw. Excluding the ash content, the timber bark, bagasse and paddy straw had a similar biochar yield of 26-29 wt.%. Tree stem and bagasse had well developed pores in a wide size range and large surface area over $200m^2/g$. Cocopeat and PKS has significantly higher biochar yield due to the increased content of lignin, but the development of intra-particle pores and microscopic surface area was very poor. The elemental composition, pH and other properties of the biochar samples were also compared.
