Impact of Salt Intake on Red and Fallow Deer Production in Australia - Review -

  • Southern and south-western Australia is a typical mediterranean environment, characterised by wet, cold winters and dry, hot summers. The evaporation rate varies significantly in summer, resulting in a high salinity of drinking water for grazing animals. In addition, a large amount of land in the cropping areas is affected by salt. Puccinellia, tall wheat grass and saltbushes have been planted to improve the soil condition and to supply feed for grazing animals. Animals grazing these areas often ingest an excessive amount of salt from soil, forage and drinking water which can reduce feed intake, increase the water requirement, depress growth and affect body composition as demonstrated in sheep. While the deer industry has been successfully developed in these regions, the potential impact of excessive salt intake on deer production is unknown. The salt tolerance has been well defined for sheep, cattle and other livestock species, but the variation between animal species, breeds within species, maturity status and grazing environments makes it impossible to apply these values directly to deer. To optimise deer production and effectively use natural resources, it is essential to understand the salt status of grazing deer and the impact of excessive salt intake on growth and reproduction of deer.

  • 본(本) 시험(試驗)은 2차천이(次遷移) 식생(植生)의 Carex ferruginea 군락(群落)인 독일(獨逸)의 남부지방인(南部地方)에 위치(位置)한 Bavarian Alps 지역(地域)에서 PK-시비(施肥) 및 면양(緬羊) 방목(放牧)에 의(依)한 식물군락(植物群落)의 천이(遷移)를 조사(調査)코자 수행(遂行)되었다. 1. Carex ferruginea 군락(群落)은 처리(處理)(환경(環境)) 조건(條件)에 의(依)해 변화(變化)되었는데 면양방목(緬羊放牧)보다는 PK-시비(施肥) 및 방목(放牧)이 더 효과적(效果的)이었다. 2. Carex ferruginea, Melica nutans, Brachypodium sylvaticum, Calamagrostis varia 등(等)의 야초(野草)는 양분흡수력(養分吸收力)이 비교적(比較的) 약(弱)하므로 PK-시비(施肥)에 의(依)해 점차(漸次) 소멸(消滅)되었고, 양분흡수력(養分吸收力)이 강(强)한 Festuca rubra, Agrostis tenuis, Poa trivialis, Trifolium repens 등(等)의 초종(草種)은 증가(增加)되었다. 3. 시험지(試驗地)의 식물군락(植物群落)의 생활형(生活型)은 반지중식물(半地中植物)(Hemicryptophyte)이 55%, 지중식물(地中植物)(Geophyte)이 40%였으나, PK-시비(施肥) 및 면양방목(緬羊放牧)에 의(依)해 반지중식물(半地中植物)은 19% 증가(增加)되었고, 지중식물(地中植物)은 31%나 감소(減少)되었다. 그러나 시비(施肥)를 하지 않고 면양방목(緬羊放牧)만 한 곳은 지중식물(地中植物)은 11% 증가(增加)되었으며, 반지중식물(半地中植物)은 시험(試驗) 전(前)보다 12% 감소(減少)되었다. 4. 시험(試驗) 착수당시(着手當時)의 Carex ferruginea 군락(群落)은 PK-시비(施肥) 및 면양방목(緬羊放牧)에 의(依)해 왕김의 털(Festuca rubra) 군락(群落)으로 천이(遷移)되었다.

Nutrient Intake and Utilization by Range Managed Sheep in Critical Physiological Stages Maintained on Grazing with Concentrate Supplementation in a Hot Semi-Arid Environment

  • The reported study was conducted on range managed Malpura ewes that were non-breeding empty, were at an advanced stage of pregnancy, and were in early lactation, under a protocol of free grazing with concentrate supplementation at 1.00, 1.25 and 1.50% of their body weight to assess their plane of nutrition and nutrient intake. The biomass yield of pasture plots was 1689, 1820 and 2912 kg/ha in pregnancy, lactation and empty phases, respectively. In addition to natural shrubs and forbs, Cenchrus ciliaris (36.4%) and dead litter (31.6%) were the major component of pasture vegetation during pregnancy. The dead litter disappeared during the lactation and empty phase with a concomitant increase in distribution of Cenchrus ciliaris to 73.0 and 87.2% respectively. The daily dry matter consumption from supplemental concentrate and free grazing was 70.1, 57.3 and 63.5 g/kg $W^{0.75}/d$ with concentrate to roughage ratio of 40:60, 47:53 and 33:67 in pregnancy, lactation and empty phases respectively. Digestibility of DM and OM were similar in the three phases while CP digestibility was higher (p<0.0l) during lactation than other two phases. Digestibility of NDF, ADF and cellulose were higher (p<0.0l) in empty than pregnancy and lactation, while hemicellulose digestibility was similar in lactation and empty and lower in pregnancy phase. The ewes in ~hases of pregnancy, lactation and empty consumed 7.1, 7.7 and 6.1 g DCP and 197.2, 214.6 and 232.5 kcal DE/kg $W^{0.75}/d$ respectively. It is concluded that ewes maintained on semi-arid Cenchrus dominated pasture with concentrate supplementation during pregnancy, lactation and empty phases consumed 45.2, 45.1 and 35.2 g DCP/Mcal ME respectively.

  • 본(本) 시험(試驗)은 독일(獨逸)의 남부지방(南部地方)인 Bayern Alps 지역(地域)의 2차천이(次遷移) 식생(植生)인 Carex ferruginea 우점(優占) 군락지(群落地)에서 PK-시비(施肥) 및 면양(緬羊) 방목(放牧)에 依(依)한 걸뿌림 초지(草地)의 식생유지(植生維持) 및 자연초지(自然草地)의 개량(改良)을 생태학적(生態學的)인 면(面)에서 연구(硏究)코자 1980년 4월부터 1983년 10월까지 수행(遂行)되었으며 식생변화(植生變化)에 대(對)한 조사(調査) 방법(方法)으로는 Releve-method, Point-Interecept-method 및 Quadrat-Charting-method 등(等)이 이용(利用)되었다. 1. PK-시비(施肥) 및 면양(緬羊) 방목(放牧)에 의(依)해 겉뿌림 초지(草地)의 사료가(飼料價)는 점차(漸次) 증가(增加)되었으며, 시비(施肥)를 하지 않고 방목(放牧)만 실시(實施)한 곳은 초지(草地)의 사료가(飼料價)가 차츰 감소(減少)되었다, 2. 2차천이(次遷移) 식생(植生)인 자연초지(自然草地)의 품종(品種)(초지가(草地價)은 시비(施肥) 및 방목(放牧)에 의(依)해 시험(試驗) 2년차(年次) 가을에 겉뿌림 초지(草地)와 대등(對等)하게 크게 증진(增進)되었으며 시비(施肥)없이 방목(放牧)만 실시(實施)한 자연초지(自然草地)의 사료가(飼料價)는 증가(增加)되지 않았다. 3. 자연초지(自然草地)에서 PK-시비(施肥)의 영향(影響)은 방목(放牧) 보나 우수(優秀)하였으며, 섭초류(涉草類)는 시비(施肥)에 의(依)해 거의 소멸(消滅)되었고, 화본과(禾本科) 및 두과(荳科)는 크게 증가(增加)되었으며, 시비(施肥)를 하지 않고 면양(緬羊) 방목(放牧)만 실시(實施)한 구(區)는 두과목초(荳科牧草)가 점차(漸次) 감소(減少)되었다. 특(特)히 6월과 10월의 섭초(涉草)의 수량(收量) 비율(比率)이 크게 차이(差異)가 있었는데 이것은 재생력(再生力) 결핍(缺乏)에 기인(基因)되었다. 4. PK-시비(施肥) 및 면양(緬羊) 방목(放牧)에 의(衣)해 시험전(試驗前)의 Carex ferruginea 우점(優占) 초지(草地) 군락(群落)은 기름진 산지초지형(山地草地型)인 Alchemillo-Cynosuretum으로 천이(遷移)되었다.

Past and Present Definitions of the Energy and Protein Requirements of Ruminants

  • The genesis of methods for defining the nutritional value of feeds and the nutrient requirements of animals, and their development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Europe and the USA are outlined. Current energy and protein feeding systems for ruminants are described. Particular reference is made to the Australian systems which are applicable to grazing animals as well as to those given prepared feeds, and enable the effective nutritional management of a imals at pasture by means of the decision support tool GrazFeed. The scheme for predicting intakes by cattle and sheep from pastures allows for the effects of selective grazing on the composition of the feed eaten, and for reduction in herbage intake when a supplementary feed is consumed. For herbage of any given concentration of metabolizable energy (ME) in the feed dry matter the changes with season of year in the net efficiency of use of the ME for growth and fattening and in the yield of microbial crude protein, g/MJ ME, which both vary with latitude, are defined. An equation to predict the energy requirements for maintenance (MEm) of both cattle and sheep includes predictions of the additional energy costs incurred by grazing compared with housed animals and the cost, if any, of cold stress. The equation allows for the change in MEm with feed intake. A flexible procedure predicts the composition of liveweight gain made by any given breed or sex of cattle and sheep at any stage of growth, and the variation with rate of gain. Protein requirements for maintenance, production including wool growth, and reproduction, are related to the quantities of microbial true protein and undegraded dietary protein truly digested in the small intestine.

Seasonal Changes in Voluntary Intake and Digestibility by Sheep Grazing Introduced Leymus chinensis Pasture

  • A study was conducted to investigate the seasonal changes in nutrient composition of pasture, voluntary intake and digestibility of sheep grazing an introduced Leymus chinensis pasture located in western Jilin Province, China. The whole-plant of L. chinensis and the samples simulating ingestion by sheep (simulating sample) were collected in spring (May, 2004), summer (July, 2004), autumn (September, 2004) and the end of winter (April, 2005). The contents of gross energy (GE), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and alkanes were determined. Voluntary intake and apparent digestibility of the nutrients in each season were also examined using 6 mature Chinese Northeast Merino ewes (differed among the seasons) grazing on a paddock of 1 ha size. The apparent digestibilities of GE, dry matter (DM), OM, CP, NDF and ADF of L. chinensis were significantly greater (p<0.05) in spring and summer than in autumn and winter. Metabolizable energy (ME) content was 12.13, 11.62, 8.66 and 10.40 MJ/kg DM for L. chinensis in spring, summer, autumn and winter respectively, and the corresponding voluntary feed intakes were 91, 119, 59 and 58 g/d per kg metabolic weight ($LW^{0.75}$). The ME contents and DM intakes in autumn and winter were significantly lower than in spring and summer (p<0.05). The intake of L. chinensis pasture was sufficient to provide ME requirements for maintenance by the dry ewes in all the seasons, but inadequate for maintenance protein requirement in winter. MINERAL STATUS OF GRAZING SHEEP IN THE DRY AREA OF MIDLAND CHINA

  • In the present study, nutritional status of some minerals in sheep grazed on native pasture was investigated in dry area, Ningxia district, of the People's Republic of China. Samples of some forages and blood of sheep were collected for two seasons, dry (March) and rainy (August) seasons. The Ca contents of forages (wheat straw, green-pea straw and some wild grasses) were relatively high as compared with that required ordinarily as standard, but on the contrary, the P content was much lower than that of standard. Consequently, Ca/P ratio was very high in cost of the roughages sampled in the region. Trace elements, Cu and Zn, content of forage samples were fairly low, and the contents of Mo and Fe were fairly high, particularly in some wild grasses, when the values were compared with that required normally. The Ca level in blood of sheep was in a range accepted as normal, and the other macro minerals(Mg and P) were contained at relatively high levels as compared with the values observed ordinarily, but not at a toxic level. With trace minerals, the plasma Fe level was extremely high as compared with the standard level, although there were no disorders due to toxicity, and Mo level in plasma was a little lower than the lower limit described as a normal. The plasma levels of other trace elements (Cu, Zn and Se) in all the animals were within the range accepted as normal. There would be no clear differences in mineral nutrition of sheep between dry and rainy seasons. These results could suggest that there is no severe unbalance and/or imbalance, and grazing sheep in the Ningxia area of midland China have no problems relating to the nutritional status of minerals.

Phylogenetic Analysis of Ruminant Theileria spp. from China Based on 28S Ribosomal RNA Gene

  • Species identification using DNA sequences is the basis for DNA taxonomy. In this study, we sequenced the ribosomal large-subunit RNA gene sequences (3,037-3,061 bp) in length of 13 Chinese Theileria stocks that were infective to cattle and sheep. The complete 28S rRNA gene is relatively difficult to amplify and its conserved region is not important for phylogenetic study. Therefore, we selected the D2-D3 region from the complete 28S rRNA sequences for phylogenetic analysis. Our analyses of 28S rRNA gene sequences showed that the 28S rRNA was useful as a phylogenetic marker for analyzing the relationships among Theileria spp. in ruminants. In addition, the D2-D3 region was a short segment that could be used instead of the whole 28S rRNA sequence during the phylogenetic analysis of Theileria, and it may be an ideal DNA barcode.

Indoor feeding combined with restricted grazing time improves body health, slaughter performance, and meat quality in Huang-huai sheep

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of three feeding systems, i.e., indoor feeding (CON), indoor feeding with 4-h daily access to grazing artificial pasture (ITGP), and indoor feeding with 8-h daily access to grazing artificial pasture (IEGP), on the plasma antioxidant and immunological capacity, slaughter characteristics, meat quality and economic efficiency of Huang-huai lambs. Methods: Thirty-three healthy Huang-huai rams with similar body weight (approximately 5 mo of age, 28.96±1.01 kg) were assigned equally to three experimental groups. When finished fattening, six lambs from each group were collect blood samples for plasma analyses and then slaughtered to determine slaughter characteristics and obtain biceps brachii muscle for further analysis of meat quality and fatty acid profile. Results: Compared to CON group, animals submitted to ITGP and IEGP groups resulted in greater contents of serum glutathione peroxidase, immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, and IgM), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), n-6 PUFA, and PUFA/saturated fatty acid (FA) ratio and lower palmitic /oleic acid ratio (p<0.05). Moreover, animals in ITGP group exhibited a higher (p<0.05) loin eye area, content of meat crude protein (CP), and eicosetrienoic acid compared to CON group, while slaughter performance was superior (p<0.05) to that of the IEGP group. The economic efficiency of ITGP group was 70.12% higher than that of CON group, while the IEGP group exhibited a decrease of 92.54% in economic efficiency compared to the CON group. Conclusion: Restricted grazing time combined with indoor feeding was more effective in conferring superior body health, carcass traits and economic efficiency in Huang-huai lambs, as well as higher CP content and healthier FA composition in the resulting meat.
