In the past few decades, the rockfill embankment dam, which has superior workability and economy, has become a major trend. In Korea, most of the embankment dams are rockfill dams, but recently, in response to the demand for sustainable development and environmentally-friendly water resource development, the sand and gravel in streams has become a major construction material for dams, rather than the non-economic rockfill, and its application examples have also increased. In this study, a large triaxial test was performed, with construction samples of different maximum sizes, in parallel with the grading method at the 'B Dam' construction site in Korea, and the effects of the different maximum sizes on the strain of the dam construction material and on the shear strength characteristics were analyzed to provide the basic data for determining the strength characteristics of the coarse-grained materials by the maximum size.
This study focused on evaluating the reliability of code formulas such as those of the current Korean Building Code(KBC 1988). UBC 1997, NBCC 1995. and BSLJ 1994 for estimating the fundamental period of RC apartment buildings with shear-wall dominant systems, representative of typical residential buildings in Korea. For this purpose, full-scale measurements were carried out on fifty RC apartment buildings, and these results were compared to those obtained by code formulas and also by dynamic analysis. Although these code formulas are based on the measured periods of buildings during various earthquakes and building period varies with the amplitude of structural deflection or strain level, ambient surveys should provide an effective tool for experimentally verifying the design period to the completed building. This comparison shows that comparatively large errors are likely to occure when the code formula of KBC 1988 is used, and all the other code formulas are not sufficient to estimate the fundamental period of apartment buildings with shear-wall dominant systems. An improved formula is proposed by regression analysis on the basis of the measured period data. The proposal is for the servicebility stress level, but it can also be applied for seismic code in the regions of low seismicity similar to Korea.
When natural rubber is used for a long period of time, it becomes aged; it usually becomes hardened and loses its damping capability. This aging process affects not only the material property but also the (fatigue) life of natural rubber. In this paper the aging effects on the material property and the fatigue life were experimentally investigated. In addition, several fatigue life prediction equations for natural rubber were proposed. In order to investigate the aging effects on the material property, the load-stretch ratio curves were plotted from the results of the tensile test, the compression test and the simple shear test for virgin and heat-aged rubber specimens. Rubber specimens were heat-aged in an oven at a temperature ranging from $50^{\circ}C$ to $90^{\circ}C$ for a period ranging from 2 days to 16 days. In order to investigate the aging effects on the fatigue life, fatigue tests were conducted for differently heat-aged hourglass-shaped and simple shear specimens. Moreover, finite element simulations were conducted for the specimens to calculate physical quantities occurring in the specimens such as the maximum value of the effective stress, the strain energy density, the first invariant of the Cauchy-Green deformation tensor and the maximum principal nominal strain. Then, four fatigue life prediction equations based on one of the physical quantities could be obtained by fitting the equations to the test data. Finally, the fatigue life of a rubber bush used in an automobile was predicted by using the prediction equations, and it was compared with the test data of the bush to evaluate the reliability of those equations.

The representative tests in this study are performed at a selected site which has the soil layers to analyze the safety and economy of the dynamic analysis for the variable soil conditions. Crosshole test and downhole test of small strain level tests and triaxial test of large strain level test are performed in the soil layers, and in the rock layers, crosshole test and downhole in-situ tests and laboratory sonic test are performed to measure the dynamic shear modulus, damping ratio, and Poisson$\acute{s}$ ratio of the soil and the rock. The correlations between the dynamic soil properties from the tests and the basic soil properties are determined through the regression analysis. The representative design value of the soil is determined by probability analysis of the test results. It is determined from the nonlinear stress-strain model in soils, and the value at small strain level is computed in rocks according to the distribution of the type of soils and the affecting variables. The constitutive value is systematized to be utilized in the analysis of the test results, and computation of the input soil data.
This disquisition proposes a nonlocal strain gradient beam theory for thermo-mechanical dynamic characteristics of embedded smart shear deformable curved piezoelectric nanobeams made of porous electro-elastic functionally graded materials by using an analytical method. Electro-elastic properties of embedded curved porous FG nanobeam are assumed to be temperature-dependent and vary through the thickness direction of beam according to the power-law which is modified to approximate material properties for even distributions of porosities. It is perceived that during manufacturing of functionally graded materials (FGMs) porosities and micro-voids can be occurred inside the material. Since variation of pores along the thickness direction influences the mechanical and physical properties, so in this study thermo-mechanical vibration analysis of curve FG piezoelectric nanobeam by considering the effect of these imperfections is performed. Nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory is utilized to consider the size effects in which the stress for not only the nonlocal stress field but also the strain gradients stress field. The governing equations and related boundary condition of embedded smart curved porous FG nanobeam subjected to thermal and electric field are derived via the energy method based on Timoshenko beam theory. An analytical Navier solution procedure is utilized to achieve the natural frequencies of porous FG curved piezoelectric nanobeam resting on Winkler and Pasternak foundation. The results for simpler states are confirmed with known data in the literature. The effects of various parameters such as nonlocality parameter, electric voltage, coefficient of porosity, elastic foundation parameters, thermal effect, gradient index, strain gradient, elastic opening angle and slenderness ratio on the natural frequency of embedded curved FG porous piezoelectric nanobeam are successfully discussed. It is concluded that these parameters play important roles on the dynamic behavior of porous FG curved nanobeam. Presented numerical results can serve as benchmarks for future analyses of curve FG nanobeam with porosity phases.
A theoretical research project is undertaken to develop integrated analysis and design tools for long span composite beams in modern high-rise buildings, and it aims to develop non-linear finite element models for practical design of composite beams. As the first paper in the series, this paper presents the development study as well as the calibration exercise of the proposed finite element models for simply supported composite beams. Other practical issues such as continuous composite beams, the provision of web openings for passage of building services, the partial continuity offered by the connections to columns as well as the behaviour of both unprotected and protected composite beams under fires will be reported separately. In this paper, details of the finite elements and the material models for both steel and reinforced concrete are first described, and finite element studies of composite beams with full details of test data are then presented. It should be noted that in the proposed finite element models, both steel beams and concrete slabs are modelled with two dimensional plane stress elements whose widths are assigned to be equal to the widths of concrete flanges, and the flange widths and the web thicknesses of steel beams as appropriate. Moreover, each shear connector is modelled with one horizontal spring and one vertical spring to simulate its longitudinal shear and pull-out actions based on measured load-slippage curves of push-out tests of shear connectors. The numerical results are then carefully analyzed and compared with the corresponding test results in terms of load mid-span deflection curves as well as load end-slippage curves. Other deformation characteristics of the composite beams such as stress and strain distributions across the composite cross-sections as well as distributions of shear forces and slippages in shear connectors along the beam spans are also examined in details. It is shown that the numerical results of the composite beams compare well with the test data in terms of various load-deformation characteristics along the entire deformation ranges. Hence, the proposed analysis and design tools are considered to be simple and yet effective for composite beams with practical geometrical dimensions and arrangements. Structural engineers are strongly encouraged to employ the models in their practical work to exploit the full advantages offered by composite construction.

The large scale shaker can be employed to measure linear and nonlinear shear moduli of soils in situ as a function of shear strain. The method involves applying dynamic loads on a surface foundation measuring the dynamic response of the soil mass beneath the foundation with embedded instrumentation. This paper focuses on the development of a framework of the inverse analysis for the interpretation of test data to estimate linear and nonlinear shear moduli of soils along with the necessity of the inverse analysis. The suggested framework is based on the nonlinear least squares but it uses two iterative loops to account for the nonlinear behavior of soil that sensors are not located. The validity of the suggested inversion framework is tested through a series of numerical parametric studies. An example use of the suggested inversion framework is also shown. Because the field condition may affect the accuracy of suggested method, it is important to conduct a preliminary inverse analysis to quantify the discrepancy between the estimated modulus and the baseline.
The objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between steady shear flow (nonlinear behavior) and dynamic viscoelastic (linear behavior) properties for concentrated polymer solutions. Using both an Advanced Rheometic Expansion System(ARES) and a Rheometics Fluids Spectrometer (RFS II), the steady shear flow viscosity and the dynamic viscoelastic properties of concentrated poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO), polyisobutylene(PIB), and polyacrylamide(PAAm) solutions have been measured over a wide range of shear rates and angular frequencies. The validity of some previously proposed relationships was compared with experimentally measured data. In addition, the effect of solution concentration on the applicability of the Cox-Merz rule was examined by comparing the steady flow viscosity and the magnitude of the complex viscosity Finally, the applicability of the Cox-Merz rule was theoretically discussed by introducing a nonlinear strain measure. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) Among the previously proposed relationships dealt with in this study, the Cox-Merz rule implying the equivalence between the steady flow viscosity and the magnitude of the complex viscosity has the best validity. (2) For polymer solutions with relatively lower concentration, the steady flow viscosity is higher than the complex viscosity. However, such a relation between the two viscosities is reversed for highly concentrated polymer solutions. (3) A nonlinear strain measure is decreased with increasing stran magnitude, after reaching the maximum value in small strain range. This behavior is different from the theoretical prediction demonstrating the shape of a damped oscillatory function. (4) The applicability of the Cox-Merz rule is influenced by the $\beta$ value, which indicates the slope of a nonlinear stain measure (namely, the degree of nonlinearity) at large shear deformations. The Cox-Merz rule shows better applicability as the $\beta$ value becomes smaller.

In this paper, the strain distribution of the bond layer has been compared with the experimental data and analyzed according to the different mesh refinements and element types. The mesh density was changed along the longitudinal direction of adherend, the longitudinal direction of overlapped region, the vertical direction of adherend, the vertical direction of adhesive and the width direction of the joint. In addition, the effect of the different types of element was evaluated using soild, shell and plane strain element. The geometric nonlinear analysis was performed to consider the large deformation of the joint. From the numerical result, at least 2 elements were needed to achieve a reliable result as the solid element used. In case of shell element, the peel strain at x/c=1 showed 22.8% error compared with the experiment but the shear strain showed a good agreement with the experiment within 1.67% error.

The length of the links in an eccentrically braced frame will dictate the behavior of the frame. Link length controls the yielding mechanism and the ultimate failure mode. For short links, the links' shear forces reach the plastic shear capacity before the end moments reach the plastic moment capacity, and the links yields in the shear, forming a shear hinges. These links are termed "shear links." For long links, the end moments reach the plastic moment capacity before the links' shear forces reach the plastic shear capacity, forming moment hinges. These links are termed moment links." In long links, flexural yielding dominates the response, and very high bending strains are required at the link ends to produce large link deformations. In a shear links, the shear force is constant along the length of the links, and the inelastic shear strain are is uniformly distributed over the length of the links. This permits the development of large inelastic link deformations without the development of excessively high local strains. However, The use of eccentrically braced steel frames for the purpose of architectural cionsiderations such as openings and doors, areis dictating the use of longer links, though. Little data areis available on the behavior of long links under cyclic loading conditions. In This paper documents the results of an experimental program is that was conducted to assess the response of moment links in eccentrically braced frames. Sixteen specimens awere tested using a cyclic load.
