Using a strain-controlled rheometer [Rheometrics Dynamic Analyzer (RDA II)], the steady shear flow properties of a semi-solid ointment base (vaseline) have been measured over a wide range of shear rates at temperature range of $25{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. In this article, the steady shear flow properties (shear stress, steady shear viscosity and yield stress) were reported from the experimentally obtained data and the effects of shear rate as well as temperature on these properties were discussed in detail. In addition, several inelastic-viscoplastic flow models including a yield stress parameter were employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady shear flow behavior, and then the applicability of these models was examined by calculating the various material parameters (yield stress, consistency index and flow behavior index). Main findings obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) At temperature range lower than $40^{\circ}C$, vaseline is regarded as a viscoplastic material having a finite magnitude of yield stress and its flow behavior beyond a yield stress shows a shear-thinning (or pseudo-plastic) feature, indicating a decrease in steady shear viscosity as an increase in shear rate. At this temperature range, the flow curve of vaseline has two inflection points and the first inflection point occurring at relatively lower shear rate corresponds to a static yield stress. The static yield stress of vaseline is decreased with increasing temperature and takes place at a lower shear rate, due to a progressive breakdown of three dimensional network structure. (2) At temperature range higher than $45^{\circ}C$, vaseline becomes a viscous liquid with no yield stress and its flow character exhibits a Newtonian behavior, demonstrating a constant steady shear viscosity regardless of an increase in shear rate. With increasing temperature, vaseline begins to show a Newtonian behavior at a lower shear rate range, indicating that the microcrystalline structure is completely destroyed due to a synergic effect of high temperature and shear deformation. (3) Over a whole range of temperatures tested, the Herschel-Bulkley, Mizrahi-Berk, and Heinz-Casson models are all applicable and have an almostly equivalent ability to quantitatively describe the steady shear flow behavior of vaseline, whereas the Bingham, Casson, and Vocadlo models do not give a good ability.
This paper is concerned with the development of a general model for predicting material damping in laminates based on the strain energy method. In this model, the effect of interlaminar stress on damping is taken into accounts along with those of in-plane extension/compression and in-plane shear. The model was verified by carrying out the damping measurements on $90^0$ unidirectional composite beams varying length and thickness. The analytical predictions were favorably compared with the experimental data. The transverse shear($$\sigma$_{yz}$) appears to have a considerable influence on the damping behaviors in $90^0$ unidirectional polymer composites. However, the other interlaminar stresses($$\sigma$_{xz}$, $$\sigma$_z$) were shown to have little impact on vibration damping in $90^0$ laminated composite beam.
This study was performed to investigate the fatigue behaviour and fatigue damage process of RC structures under repeated load. Especially, the behavior of RC beams subjected to flexure-shear force has been focused. The test results show that the deflections of beam and the strains of longitudinal steels and stirrups under cyclic loads increase with constant rate, and these increases depend on diagonal crack openings and strain increases. The present study provides useful data for the analysis of damage accumulation of reinforced concrete beams under repeated loadings.
Forming limit diagrams for three different galvanized deep drawing quality steel sheets have been measured by hemispherical punch stretching. The experimental forming limit diagrams have been compared with results calculated using the shear instability criterion and the M-K model which takes into account a strain gradient effect resulting from bending (curvature) of a flat sheet by punch stretching. The measured data were in good agreement with the results calculated using exponent M value of 8 in Hosford's yield criterion for the M-K model and M= 6 for the shear instability model.
This paper has the object of investigating natural frequencies of thick plates on inhomogeneous Pasternak foundation by means of finite element method and providing kinematic design data lot mat of building structures. This analysis was applied for design of substructure on elastic foundation. Mat of building structure may be consisdered as a thick plate on elastic foundation. Recently, as size of building structure becomes larger, mat area of building structure also tend to become target and building structure is supported on inhomogeneous foundation. In this paper, vibration analysis or rectangular thick plate is done by use or serendipity finite element with 8 nodes by considering shearing strain of plate. The solutions of this paper are compared with existing solutions and finite element solutions with 4${\times}$4 meshes of this analysis are shown the error of maximum 0.083% about the existing solutions. It is shown that natrural frequencies depend on not only Winkler foundation parameter but also shear foundation parameter.
It is important to estimate the mechanical properties of clay since it is directly related to the design and the construction of geotechnical structures. Site exploration, which is composed of boring, sampling, in-situ, or laboratory tests, is preformed to estimate the mechanical properties. However, mechanical properties of clay measured from laboratory test may be different from in-situ properties due to disturbances occurred during sampling, transportation, storage, and trimming. In this study, the degree of disturbance according to sampling method was estimated with the test results of CK/sub o/U triaxial compression test on Yangsan clay. The soil samples were obtained by three types of sampling method, j.e., 76mm-tube sampler, 76mm-piston sampler, and block sampler. In order to evaluate the quality of samples, volumetric strain, undrained shear strength, secant Young's modulus, and pore pressure coefficient at peak measured from each sample were compared with one another. From the test results, it was observed that mechanical properties of the block and piston samples were more reliable than those of tube samples. But it was observed that the water content of piston was similar to that of tube samples at given depths while the water content of block samples was 14.3∼15.8% smaller than that of piston and tube samples. In addition to the evaluation of the quality of samples, relationship between c/sub u// σ/sub vc/'and OCR was established from the results of the CK/sub o/U triaxial compression tests, which were carried out using SHANSEP method. And also undrained shear strength was analyzed using the in-situ test data such as Cone Penetration Test(CPT), Dilatometer Test(DMT), and Field Vane Test(FVT) and was compared with that evaluated from CK/sub o/U triaxial compression test.
A simple, yet effective, material model of concrete is presented in this paper. Based on the orthotropic model in which the assumption of orthogonal principal strain axes is used, the incremental stress-strain relation of concrete is defined in the biaxial stress condition and the rotating crack model is adopted to represent realistically the change of the crack direction according to the different loading pad after cracking. Numerical results obtained from the finite element analysis are compared favourably with the available experimental data. By the parametric study, moreover, it was found that He most important factor in the structural behavior when the reinforced concrete structure is subjected to the dominent shear forces is the tension stiffening effect. The influences of the tension stiffening effect remarkably appears as the steel ratio decreases.
The combined shear and compression behaviors of seismic isolation rubber bearings are analyzed using the hyperelasticity material option of the ABAQUS computer program. The purpose of the analysis is to predict the behavior of laminated rubber bearing before the several tests. Some kinds of strain energy density functions are used as constitutive law for rubber itself having the hyperelasticity. The results are compared with test data peformed in Italy The analysis results show a little different with experimental results depending on the constitutive model and the refinement of finite element. The high order form of strain energy density functions results in good agreements and the mesh refinement above two for one rubber layer is enough to get good results.

The 11α-hydroxylation of canrenone can be catalyzed by Aspergillus ochraceus in bioreactors, where the geometry of the impeller greatly influences the biotransformation. In this study, the effects of the blade number and impeller diameter of a Rushton turbine on the 11α-hydroxylation of canrenone were considered. The results of fermentation experiments using a 50 mm four-blade impeller showed that 3.40% and 11.43% increases in the conversion ratio were achieved by increasing the blade number and impeller diameter, respectively. However, with an impeller diameter of 60 mm, the conversion ratio with a six-blade impeller was 14.42% lower than that with a four-blade impeller. Data from cold model experiments with a large-diameter six-blade impeller indicated that the serious leakage of inclusions and a 22.08% enzyme activity retention led to a low conversion ratio. Numerical simulations suggested that there was good gas distribution and high fluid flow velocity when the fluid was stirred by large-diameter impellers, resulting in a high dissolved oxygen content and good bulk circulation, which positively affected hyphal growth and metabolism. However, a large-diameter six-blade impeller created overly high shear compared to a large-diameter four-blade impeller, thereby decreasing the conversion ratio. The average shear rates of the former and latter cases were 43.25 s-1 and 35.31 s-1, respectively. We therefore concluded that appropriate shear should be applied in the 11α-hydroxylation of canrenone. Overall, this study provides basic data for the scaled-up production of 11α-hydroxycanrenone.
The Imgye area, in the NE Taebaegsan Region, consists of Precambrian granites and schist complex at the base and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks and amphibolite at cover. The granites in the area were previously thought to be Paleozoic in age, but recent geochronological data yields isotopic age ranging from $1837{\pm}82Ma$ to $2108{\pm}82Ma$ by Rb-Sr whole rock method. Therefore, basement-cover relations in the area should be reexamined. During the study, mylonite zone recognized along the contact boundary between Precambrian granites and Cambrian Jangsan Quartzite Formation. Mylonite zone has 150 - 250 m in width. Mylonitic rocks can divide into two groups; quartz mylonite derived from Jangsan Formation and mylonitic granites from Precambrian granites. Intensity of mylonitic foliation decreased toward the north. Amphibolite occurs as an intrusive sills within mylonite zone. Mineral fabrics and small scale shear zones are commonly seen in amphibolite. It indicates that intrusive age of amphibolite is synchronous to the formation of mylonite zone. Mylonite zone was reactivated as ductile thrust faults and forms the hinterland dipping imbricate zone during the Cretaceous Bulkuksa Orogeny. The near parallelism of mineral stretching lineation and long axis of strain ellipes indicates that the area is affected by a homogeneous pure shear flattening together with the variable components of simple shear.
