Slope draperies in soil and rock are a well known method to avoid rockfalls into the roads or onto housings. Common wire mesh or a combination of wire mesh and wire rope nets are pinned to the slope by the means of fully grouted nails or anchors. Most of these installations have not been designed to stabilize the slope, but simply avoid the rocks from bouncing. The combination of soil- or rocknailing with a designable flexible facing system offers the advantage of a longterm stabilization of slopes and can replace other standard methods for slope stabilization. The capability to transfer axial and shear loads from the flexible facing system to the anchor points is most decisive for the design of the stabilization system. But the transfer of forces by mesh as pure surface protection devices is limited on account of their tensile strength and above all also by the possible force transmission to the anchoring points. Strong wire rope nets increase the performance for slope stabilizations with greater distances between nails and anchors and are widely used in Europe. However, they are comparatively expensive in relation to the protected surface. Today, special processes enable the production of diagonally structured mesh from high-tensile steel wire. These mesh provide tensile strengths comparable to wire rope nets. The interaction of mesh and fastening to nail / anchor has been investigated in comprehensive laboratory tests. This also in an effort to find a suitable fastening plates which allows an optimal utilization of the strength of the mesh in tangential (slope-parallel) as well as in vertical direction (perpendicular to the slope). The trials also confirmed that these new mesh, in combination with suitable plates, enable substantial pretensioning of the system. Such pretensioning increases the efficiency of the protection system. This restricts deformations in the surface section of critical slopes which might otherwise cause slides and movements as a result of dilatation. Suitable dimensioning models permit to correctly dimension such systems. The new mesh with the adapted fastening elements have already been installed in first pilot projects in Switzerland and Germany and provide useful information on handling and effects.
Three-dimensional flow phenomena in a wire-wrapped 37-pin fuel assembly mock-up of a Japanese loop-type sodium-cooled fast reactor, Monju, were investigated with a numerical analysis using a general-purpose commercial computational fluid dynamics code, CFX. Complicated and vortical flow phenomena in the wire-wrapped 37-pin fuel assembly were captured by a Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes flow simulation using a shear stress transport turbulence model. The main purpose of the current study is to understand the three-dimensional complex flow phenomena in a wire-wrapped fuel assembly to support the license issue for the core design. Computational fluid dynamics results show good agreement with friction factor correlation models. The secondary flow in the corner and edge subchannels is much stronger than that in an interior subchannel. The axial velocity averaged in the corner and edge subchannels is higher than that averaged in the interior subchannels. Three-dimensional multiscale vortex structures start to be formed by an interaction between secondary flows around each wire-wrapped pin. Behavior of the large-scale vortex structures in the corner and edge subchannels is closely related to the relative position between the hexagonal duct wall and the helically wrapped wire spacer. The small-scale vortex is axially developed in the interior subchannels. Furthermore, a driving force on each wire spacer surface is closely related to the relative position between the hexagonal duct wall and the wire spacer.
The present study was performed to determine the effect of dietary supplementation with processed sulfur on the quality and stability of vacuum packaged pork during aging time. All groups were designated into two groups; NP, a group fed basal diet and SP, a group fed basal diet and processed sulfur, 3 g/kg feed. Following vacuum packaging, Longissimus dorsi muscles were vacuum-packaged and stored under refrigerated condition ($1-2^{\circ}C$) for 21 d. Weight loss of the SP group was lower (p<0.05) than that of the NP group. Interaction effect of shear force and cooking loss was observed (p<0.05). Redness values of the SP group at 14 and 21 d after storage were higher than those of the NP group (p<0.05). Lipid oxidation and volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) levels in the SP group were retarded (p<0.05) compared to that of the NP group during storage. Aspartic and glutamic acid in SP were higher than in NP (p<0.1). There was no significant (p>0.05) difference in TPC between the both groups during storage. Therefore, vacuum packaged pork from pigs fed processed sulfur had better aging yield and storage stability than pork from pigs fed basal diet.
The influence of temperature and calcium concentration on the gelation kinetics of purified Aigeok system has been investigated by small deformation oscillatory measurement. DE(degree of esterification) of the present sample was indicated of low methoxyl Aigeok polysaccharide by FT-IR. The calcium induced gelation of Aigeok has been studied. Both moduli reached the saturation value during the period of experiments. Rate constant increased with increasing calcium concentration, however above 4.08 mM calcium chloride caused a sudden drop in gel strength. The experimental result that the decrease in gel strength at high calcium concentration was seems to be phase separation or competitive inhibition between calcium ions. The storage and loss shear moduli decreased with increasing temperature. The rate constant of Aigeok system remarkably dropped above $35^{\circ}C$. Thus hydrogen bonding is prior to hydrophobic interaction for Aigeok molecule.
It is necessary to consider the site amplification for estimating SSI (soil structure interaction) and seismic source with more confidence. The horizontal to vertical (H/V) ratio technique in spectral domain is one of several techniques to estimate empirical site transfer function. The technique, originally proposed by Nakamura (1989), is applied to analyze the surface waves in the microtremor records. However, the application of this technique has been widened to the shear wave energy of strong motions for estimating site amplification. The purpose of this paper is to estimate spectral ratio using observed data at the seismic stations distributed within Southern Korean Peninsula from the Fukuoka earthquake including 11 aftershocks. The results show that each station has the its own characteristics of the specific resonance, high-band, and low-band frequency. The characteristics of the resonance frequency is more important because the quality of the seismic records are dependent on the resonance frequency. The result can be used for the study of site classification and removal of the site amplification effects from observed records can give us more reliable seismic source parameters.

This paper presents the details of Finite Element (FE) analysis carried out to determine the limiting deformation capacity and failure mode of Laced Steel-Concrete Composite (LSCC) beam, which was proposed and experimentally studied by the authors earlier (Anandavalli et al. 2012). The present study attains significance due to the fact that LSCC beam is found to possess very high deformation capacity at which range, the conventional laboratory experiments are not capable to perform. FE model combining solid, shell and link elements is adopted for modeling the beam geometry and compatible nonlinear material models are employed in the analysis. Besides these, an interface model is also included to appropriately account for the interaction between concrete and steel elements. As the study aims to quantify the limiting deformation capacity and failure mode of the beam, a suitable damage model is made use of in the analysis. The FE model and results of nonlinear static analysis are validated by comparing with the load-deformation response available from experiment. After validation, the analysis is continued to establish the limiting deformation capacity of the beam, which is assumed to synchronise with tensile strain in bottom cover plate reaching the corresponding ultimate value. The results so found indicate about $20^{\circ}$ support rotation for LSCC beam with $45^{\circ}$ lacing. Results of parametric study indicate that the limiting capacity of the LSCC beam is more influenced by the lacing angle and thickness of the cover plate.

The structural analysis such as rigid frame analysis has been used for the design of cut and cover tunnel due to its simplicity and convenience. This analysis, however, could not account for the geometrical factors such as interface elements, slope of excavation plane, distance between lining and excavation plane, etc. To develop the analysis technique and design technology for the cut and cover tunnel, in this study, the numerical analyses considering not only geometrical but geotechnical factors are conducted. Especially, the effects on the mechanical behaviors of cut and cover tunnel due to the slope of excavation plane and the distance between lining and excavation plane are mainly focused in this study.
Two-dimensional Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) was carried out to investigate the uniform flow over a twin-box bridge deck (TBBD) with various gap ratios of L/C=5.1%, 12.8%, 25.6%, 38.5%, 73.3% and 108.2% (L: the gap-width between two girders, C: the chord length of a single girder) at Reynolds number, Re=4×104. The aerodynamic coefficients of the prototype deck with gap ratio of 73.3% obtained from the present simulation were compared with the previous experimental and numerical data for different attack angles to validate the present numerical method. Particular attention is devoted to the fluctuating pressure distribution and forces, shear layer reattachment position, wake velocity and flow pattern in order to understand the effects of gap ratio on dynamic flow interaction with the twin-box bridge deck. The flow structure is sensitive to the gap, thus a change in L/C thus leads to single-side shedding regime at L/C≤25.6%, and co-shedding regime at L/C≥35.8% distinguished by drastic changes in flow structure and vortex shedding. The gap-ratio-dependent Strouhal number gradually increases from 0.12 to 0.27, though the domain frequencies of vortices shedding from two girders are identical. The mean and fluctuating pressure distributions is significantly influenced by the flow pattern, and thus the fluctuating lift force on two girders increases or decreases with increasing of L/C in the single-side shedding and co-shedding regime, respectively. In addition, the flow mechanisms for the variation in aerodynamic performance with respect to gap ratios are discussed in detail.

An integrated analysis of kerosine/LOX based KSR-III rocket body/plume flowfield has been performed. The analysis has been executed employing three kind of gas thermo-chemical models including calorically perfect gas, multiple species chemically reacting gas, and chemically frozen gas models and their effect on rocket flowfield has been accessed to provide the most appropriate gas thermo-chemical model which meets a specific purpose of performing rocket body and plume analysis. The finite-rate chemically reacting flow solution exhibited higher temperature throughout the flowfield than other gas models due to the increased combustion gas temperature caused by the chemical reactions within the nozzle. All the reactions were dominated only in the shear layer and behind the barrel shock reflection region where the gas temperature is high and the effect of finite-rate chemical reactions on the flowfield was found to be minor. However, the present plume computation including finite-rate chemical reactions revealed major reactions occurring in the plume and their reaction mechanisms and as well.

A numerical model to simulate bond-slip behavior of composite beam bridges is introduced in this paper. Assuming a linear bond stress-slip relation along the interface between the slab and girder, the slip behavior is implemented into a finite element formulation. Adopting the introduced model, the slip behavior can be taken account even in a beam element which is composed of both end nodes only. Governing equation of the slip behavior, based on the linear partial interaction theory, can be determined from the force equilibrium and a constant curvature distribution across the section of a composite beam. Since the governing equation for the slip behavior requires the moment values at both end nodes, the piecewise linear distribution of the constant bending moment in an element is assumed. Analysis results by the model are compared with numerical results and experimental values, and load-displacement relations of composite beams were then evaluated to verify the validity of the proposed model.
