A stepped specimen which is subjected to step loading is modeled to study the initiation and growth of adiabatic shear band using explicit time integration finite element code. The material model for specimen includes effects of thermal softening, strain hardening and strain rate hardening. Various mesh sizes are tested to check whether they are small enough to model highly localized discontinuous phenomena reasonably well. It is shown that the number of adiabatic shear band depends on impact velocity and it is also shown that the initiation and growth of adiabatic shear band inversely depends on prescribed velocity at the top of specimen.

Thanks to a new in-situ seismic probe, using bender elements and penetration scheme, a simple linear relationship between undrained shear strength(Cu) and shear wave velocity(Vs) was obtained. This priceless relationship is worthy to be illuminated further in ideal laboratory environment. To avoid sampling disturbance effect, special consolidation cylinders were used to make normally consolidated specimens from kaolinite suspension. The undrained shear strengths of the specimens were measured using unconsolidated undrained triaxial compression tests. Also shear wave velocity measurements were performedprior to shearing the same specimens, using the bender elements installed in the base pedestal and the top cap of the triaxial compression cell. The Cu-Vs relationship is fairly linear and supports the linear trend of clayey silt obtained using field testing. Also the classic density-shear modulus relationship for soft clay proposed by Hardin and Black(1969) was once more verified hereby.
This paper presents how redevelopment of the boundary layer in a backward-facing step flow is affected by boundary conditions imposed on velocity at the inlet, top and exit of the flow. A two-dimensional, laminar, incompressible flow over a backward-facing step with an open top boundary has been computed by using numerical methods of second-order time and spatial accuracy and a fractional-step method that guarantees a divergence-free velocity field at all time. The inlet velocity profile above the step is of Blasius type. Along the top boundary, shear-tree and Dirichlet conditions on the streamwise velocity were considered and at the exit fully-developed and convective boundary conditions were examined. (The vertical velocity at all boundaries were assumed to be zero explicitly or implicitly.) From the computed flow fields, the reattachment on the bottom side of shear layer separated from the tip of the step and succeeding redevelopment of the boundary layer were investigated.

Study of turbulent mixing layers has been a popular subject from the point of view of both practical application and phenomenological importance in engineering field. Turbulent mixing layers can be applied in many fields where rapid transition to turbulence is desirable in order to prevent boundary layer separation or to enhance mixing. The ability to control mixing, structure and growth of the shear flow would obviously have a considerable impact on many engineering applications. In addition to practical applications, free shear flows are one of the simplest flows to understand the fundamental mechanism in the transition process to turbulence. After the discovery of large-scale vortical structure in free shear flows many researchers have investigated the physical mechanism of generation and dissipation processes of the vortical structure. This study investigated the role of the large-scale vortical structures in the turbulent mixing layer using LES(Large-Eddy Simulation). The result shows that the pairing interaction of the vortical structure plays an important role in the growth rate of a mixing layer. It is found that the turbulence quantities depend strongly on the velocity ratio. It is also found that the vorticity in the high-velocity-side can extract energy from the mean flow, while the vorticity in the low-velocity-side lose energy by the viscous dissipation. Finally the results suggest the guideline to obtain the desired flow by control of the velocity ratio.

This study was focused on the examination of the flame structure and the combustion characteristics of diffusion flame which was formed the turbulent shear flow of a double coaxial air jet system. The shear flow was formed by the difference velocity of surrounding air jet(U$\_$s/) and center air jet (U$\_$c/). So experimental condition was divided S-type flame (.lambda. > 1) and C-type flame (.lambda. < 1) by velocity ratio .lambda. (=U$\_$s//U$\_$c/). For examination of the flame structure and the combustion characteristics in diffusion flame, coherent structure was observed in flame by schlieren photograph method. We measured fluctuating temperature and ion current simultaneously and accomplished the statistical analysis of its. According to schlieren photograph, the flame was stabilized in the rim of the direction of lower velocity air jet, coherent eddy was produced and developed by higher velocity air jet. The statistical data of fluctuating temperature and ion current was indicated that reaction was dominated by higher velocity air jet. The mixing state of burnt gas and non-burnt gas was distributed the wide area at Z = 100 mm of C-type flame.
The flow characteristics of developing unsteady laminar flow in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct are experimentally investigated by using laser doppler velocimerty (LDV) system with data acquisition and processing system of rotating machinery resolver(RMR) and PHASE software. The major flow characteristics of developing laminar pulsating flows are presented by mean velocity profilel velocity distribution of secondary flow, wall shear stress distributions, entrance lengths according to dimensionless angular frequency($\omega^+$), velocity amplitude ratio($A^1$), and time-averaged Dean number($De_ta$). The velocity profiles and wall shear stress distribution of laminar pulsating flow with dimensionlessangular frequency show the flow characteristics of the quasi-steady laminar flow in a curved duct. The developing region of laminar pulsatile flows in a square-sectional $180^{\circ}$ curved duct is extended to the curved duct angle of approximately $120^{\circ}$ under the present experimental condition.

In the present study, the flow characteristics of developing laminar oscillatory flows in a square -sectional 180 deg. curved duct are investigated experimentally. The experimental study using air in a square-sectional 180 deg. curved duct is carried out to measure velocity distributions with a data acquisition and LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry) processing system. In this system, Rotating Machinery Resolver (RMR) and PHASE program are used to obtain the results of unsteady flows. The major flow characteristics of developing oscillatory flows are found by analyzing velocity curves, mean velocity profiles, time-averaged velocity distribution of secondary flow, wall shear stress distributions, and entrance lengths. In a lower dimensionless angular frequency, the axial velocity distribution of laminar oscillatory flow in a curved duct shows a convex shape in a central part and axial symmetry. The maximum value of wall shear stress in a lower dimensionless angular frequency is located in an outside wall, but according to increasing the dimensionless angular frequency, the maximum of wall shear stress is moved to inner wall. The entrance lengths of laminar oscillatory flows in a square-sectional 180 deg. curved duct is obtained to 90 deg. of bended angle of duct in this experimental conditions.
In this study, atomistic simulations are performed to study the effect of Al solute on the behaviour of edge dislocation in Mg alloys. After the dissociation of an Mg basal edge dislocation into two Shockley partials using molecular mechanics, the interaction between the dislocation and Al solute at different temperatures is studied using molecular dynamics. It appears from the simulations that the critical shear stress increases with the Al solute concentration. Comparing with the solute effect at T = 0 K, however, the critical shear stress at a finite temperature is lower since the kinetic energy of the atoms can help the dislocation conquer the energy barriers created by the Al atoms. The velocity of the edge dislocation decreases as the Al concentration increases when the external shear stress is relatively small regardless of temperature. The Al concentration effect on the dislocation velocity is not significant at very high shear stress level when the solute concentration is below 4.0 at%. Drag coefficient B increases with the Al concentration when the stress to temperature ratio is below 0.3 MPa/K, although the effect is more significant at low temperatures.

Controlled Low Strength Material (CLSM) has high fluidity and self-compaction characteristics. CLSM is mainly used for backfilling the excavated road. Early-age properties of CLSM should be characterized for fast restoration of the road. In this study, shear wave monitoring and Vicat needle test are performed to investigate the early-age properties of CLSM depending on the setting time. CLSM consists of CSA cement, fly ash, silt and sand, accelerator, and water. Five fly ashes with different chemical properties are used for CLSM samples. The penetration of CLSM along setting time is obtained through the Vicat needle test. A pair of bender elements are placed in a mold for shear wave measurement, and the change in shear waves with the setting time is monitored. The experimental results show that, regardless of the type of fly ash, the penetration depth decreases and the shear wave velocity increases with the setting time. Depending on the type of fly ash, initial and final times and shear wave velocity change. After testing, the correlation between penetration and shear wave velocity is obtained with high coefficient of determination. The shear wave measurement technique using the bender element can be used to identify early-age properties.

Shear wane velocity is important property for grasping the dynamic characteristics of material. It is has been used in various fields such as non-destructive testings of structures, seismic analysis of geotechnical structures and maintenance of concrete structure, and etc. Usually, shear wave velocities of rock cores and concrete cylinders are determined by free-free resonance tests, Shear wave measurement in free-free resonance tests is not straightforward, as compared with rod wave and flexural wane measurements. In This study, a new technique using resonance features of flexural and shear waves were proposed in which the nodal points for the fundamental mode of flexural waves were employed to generate and measure the shear waves with the flexural waves minimized. The real measurements for aluminum cylinders proved validity and reliability of the proposed algorithm. In addition to the proposed algorithm, the effects of material properties on elastic-wave velocities in resonance measurements were also studied. In summary, a new framework of the resonance measurements for shear-wave velocity determination was established, based on the results of this thesis.
