This paper describes an extension of a numerical model, which was developed to simulate the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures subject to monotonic in-plane shear. While maintaining all the basic assumptions adopted in defining the constitutive relations of concrete under monotonic loadings, a hysteretic stress-strain relation of concrete, which crosses the tension-compression region, is defined. In addition, curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel considering the Bauschinger effect are used. Modifications of the stress-strain relation of concrete and steel are also introduced to reflect a pinching effect depending on the shear span ratio and to represent an average stress distribution in a cracked RC element, respectively.
This paper was designed to estimate the adhesion strength of galvannealed coatings on steel sheets. The adhesion strength were evaluated using single lap - shear tests where the lap joint was bonded by structural adhesive. Tests were performed for overlap length of 5mm, 10mm and 15 mm and three directions (0, 45, 90) of steel sheets used as the adherend of the overlap joint. After the tests, FE simulations of the single lap-shear test were also carried out to observe the stress distribution in the interface between the adhesive and the coated sheet. The results showed that the joint failure loads obtained from the tensile tests of bonded single lap-joints were the same, regardless of overlap lengths and directions of steel sheets. Also, the failure of galvannealed coatings greatly depended on shear stress distribution in the interface and the value was about 30MPa.
This paper presents an efficient and accurate coupled beam model for piezoelectric bimorphs based on improved first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The model combines the equivalent single layer approach for the mechanical displacements and a layerwise modeling for the electric potential. General electric field function is proposed to reasonably approximate the through-the-thickness distribution of the applied and induced electric potentials. Layerwise defined shear correction factor (k) accounting for nonlinear shear strain distribution is introduced into both the shear stress resultant and the electric displacement integration. Analytical solutions for free vibrations and forced response under electromechanical loads are obtained for the simply supported piezoelectric bimorphs with series or parallel arrangement, and the numerical results for various length-to-thickness ratios are compared with the exact two-dimensional piezoelasticity solution. Excellent predictions with low error estimates of local and global responses as well as the modal frequencies are observed.
An analytical method is developed which focused on the end effects for determining the thermal stress distribution in an laminated beam bonded with adhesive layer. This method gives the stress distribution which satisfy the stress-free boundary condition at edge completely. Numerical example, in which an Al-Cu beam bonded with solder(Pb-Sn) is treated, shows that the shear and peeling stresses at the interfaces are significant near the edge and become negligible in the interior region.
Intracellular gradients of the free calcium concentration are thought to be critical for the localization of functional responses within a cell. The mechanism of mechanotransduction may be associated with the localized accumulation of calcium stores for shear stress-exposed endothelial cells. The distribution of the calcium stores and the formation of the stress fibers were investigated by the indirect double immunofluorescent staining method with the calreticulin antibody and rhodamine phalloidin under flow condition. The shear stress of steady flow reorganized the cytoskeleton structure including the bundling and translocation to focal contacts. The calcium stores translocated from the cytoplasm to the focal contacting area. Consequently. accumulation of the calcium stores may participate in the shear stress-induced cytoskeleton organization of endothelial cells.
A new I-girder consisted of top concrete-filled tubular flange and corrugated web has been proved to have high resistance to both global buckling of the entire girder and local buckling of the web. This study carries out theoretical analysis and experimental tests for this new I-girder to investigate the stress distribution in the flanges and in the corrugated web. Based on some reasonable assumptions, theoretical equations for calculating the normal stress in the flanges and the shear stress in the corrugated web are presented. To verify the accuracy of the presented equations, experimental tests on two specimens were carried out, and the experimental results of stress distribution were used to assess the theoretical prediction. Comparison between the two results indicates that the presented theoretical equations have enough accuracy for calculating the stress in the new I-girder, and thus they can be used reliably in the design stage.
The near field structure of round turbulent jets with initially asymmetric velocity distribution is investigated experimentally. Experiments were carried out using a constant temperature hot-wire anemometry system to measure streamwise velocity in the jets. The measurements were undertaken across the jet at various streamwise stations in a range starting from the jet exit plane and up to a downstream location of twelve diameters. The experimental results include the distribution of mean and instantaneous velocities, vorticity field, turbulence intensity, and the Reynolds shear stress. The asymmetry of the jet exit plane was obtained by using circular cross-section pipes with a bend at the upstream of the exit. Three pipes were used for this study: A straight pipe, 90 and 160 degree-bended pipes. Therefore, at the upstream of the pipe exit, the secondary flow through the bend and the mean streamwise velocity distribution could be controlled by changing the curvature of pipes.
This study evaluated the effect of factors influencing the initial biofilm formation in drinking water distribution pipe by running experiments using a $2^{4-1}$ fractional factorial experimental design with a replicate. Important variables used for assessing biofilm formation included BDOC(biodegradable dissolved organic carbon), viable heterotrophic bacteria present in drinking water, water temperature, and shear stress at two levels each. Based on the statistical analysis of biofilm levels measured as attached HPC(heterotrophic plate count) and community-level assay, the main factors that have significant effects on biofilm formation were found to be viable heterotrophic bacteria and BDOC. Water temperature only exhibited significant effect on the levels of attached HPC, while shear stress was not a significant factor under given conditions. Moreover, the statistical analysis revealed that interactions between the important variables were not statistically significant at a 0.05 significance level.
There is still a lack of knowledge and modelling relating to shear behaviour in reinforced concrete beams. The reason is that shear loading leads to complicated physical mecanisms, such as interlock action, dowel action, etc. Therefore, It is difficult that we make the ideal model of shear behaviour, while Truss model theory has been made good use of shear design because of simplicity and reasonableness. In this study, 6 T-type reinforced concrete beams were designed and made based on the two truss models, i.e, the plasticity truss model and the compatibility truss model, to observe shear strength of concrete and stress distribution of stirrups. 6 beams test pieces were tested with the following testing parameters. 1) specified concrete strength ; 270kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ 2) with and without the steel fiber.
A higher-oder laminated plate theory including the effect of transverse shear deformation is developed to calculate the gross response and the detailed stress distribution. The theory satisfies the continuity condition of transverse shear stress, and accounts for parabolic variation of the transverse shear stresses through the thickness of each layer. Exact closed-ply laminates are obtained and the results are compared with three-dimensional elasticity solutions and a simple higher-order theory solutions. The results of the present work exhibit acceptable accuracy when compared to the three-dimensional elasticity solutions.
