  • Exogenous lipid pneumonia is a rare disease resulting from the aspiration or inhalation of vegetable, animal, or mineral oils. In Korea, the most frequently implicated agent is squalen, which can be obtained from shark liver oil. Lipid pneumonia by aspiration of the vegetable oil is very rare. We experienced a 77-year-old man with a history of ingestion of green perilla oil. His clinical course was favorable; after exposure to the oil was stopped, the patient's symptoms improved.

  • This study focuses on autonomous exploration based on map expansion for an underwater robot equipped with acoustic sonars. Map expansion is applicable to large-area mapping, but it may affect localization accuracy. Thus, as the key contribution of this paper, we propose a method for underwater autonomous exploration wherein the robot determines the trade-off between map expansion ratio and position accuracy, selects which of the two has higher priority, and then moves to a mission step. An occupancy grid map is synthesized by utilizing the measurements of an acoustic range sonar that determines the probability of occupancy. This information is then used to determine a path to the frontier, which becomes the new search point. During area searching and map building, the robot revisits artificial landmarks to improve its position accuracy as based on imaging sonar-based recognition and EKF-SLAM if the position accuracy is above the predetermined threshold. Additionally, real-time experiments were conducted by using an underwater robot, yShark, to validate the proposed method, and the analysis of the results is discussed herein.

  • In general, such methods as interferometers or wavefront sensors are commonly used for testing of an optical system and optical components. In these cases, the surrounding environments are unlikely to affect the measurements. On the other hand, intraocular lenses of hydrophilic materials with special properties experience a certain difficulty in testing the optical properties. An intraocular lens is dried in the air, which causes deformation and changes the optical characteristics such as index of refraction and thickness. Thus, it is hard to measure the optical characteristics of an intraocular lens by using common methods. In this study, a special structure is used for measuring of the transmission wavefront aberration and effective focal length of an intraocular lens of hydrophilic materials by using a Shark-Hartmann sensor among the various measuring methods. As an application of this measuring method, this study shows a simple method to measure the index of refraction of unknown liquids with a plano-convex lens with a well known index of refraction. Also, this method is used to measure the optical properties of a plano-convex such as index of refraction and curvature by using a liquid with a well known index of refraction.

  • Recently, software has increased in complexity and been applied in various industrial fields. As a result, the presence of software bugs cannot be avoided. Various bug severity prediction methodologies have been proposed, but their performance needs to be further improved. In this study, we propose a novel technique for bug severity prediction in cross projects such as Eclipse, Mozilla, WireShark, and Xamarin by using topic modeling and similarity (i.e., KL-divergence). First, we construct topic models from bug repositories in cross projects using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). Then, we find topics in each project that contain the most numerous similar bug reports by using a new bug report. Next, we extract the bug reports belonging to the selected topics and input them to a Naïve Bayes Multinomial (NBM) algorithm. Finally, we predict the bug severity in the new bug report. In order to evaluate the performance of our approach and to verify the difference between cross projects and single project, we compare it with the Naïve Bayes Multinomial approach; the Lamkanfi methodology, which is a well-known bug severity prediction approach; and an emotional similarity-based bug severity prediction approach. Our approach exhibits a better performance than the compared methods.

  • Ethereum is an open software platform based on blockchain technology that enables the construction and distribution of distributed applications. Ethereum uses a fully distributed connection method in which all participating nodes participate in the network with equal authority and rights. Ethereum networks use Kademlia-based node discovery protocols to retrieve and store node information. Ethereum is striving to stabilize the entire network topology by implementing node discovery protocols, but systems for monitoring are insufficient. This paper develops a WireShark dissector that can receive packet information in the Ethereum node discovery process and provides network packet measurement results. It can be used as basic data for the research on network performance improvement and vulnerability by analyzing the Ethereum node discovery process.

  • Myosin is considered as the vital motor protein in vertebrates and invertebrates. Our present study was conducted to decipher the occurrence of myosin in dog fish (Squalus mitsukurii). We isolated one clone containing 979 bp cDNA sequence, which consisted of a complete coding sequence of 453 bp and a deduced amino acid sequence of 150 amino acids from the open reading frame with molecular weight, isoelectric point and aliphatic index are 16.72 Kda, 4.49 and 78.00, respectively. It contained 428 bp long 3' UTR with single potential polyadenylation signals (AATAAA). The predicted EF CA2+ binding domains were identified in residue 6-41, 83-118 and 133-150. A BLAST search indicates this protein exhibits a strong similarity to whale shark (Rhincodon typus) MLC3 (91% identical) and also house mouse (Mus musculus) MLC isoform 3f (81% identical). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that this protein is a MLC 3 isoform like protein. This protein also demonstrates highly conserved region with other myosin proteins. Homology modeling of S. mitsukuri was performed using crystal structure of Gallus gallus skeletal muscle myosin II based on high similarity. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (PCR), quantitative PCR results exhibits dogfish myosin protein is highly expressed in muscle tissue.

  • Retroviral integration into ancient vertebrate genomes left traces that can shed light on the early history of viruses. In this study, we explored the early evolution of retroviruses by isolating nine Spuma endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) and one Epsilon ERV from the genomes of Agnatha and Chondrichthyes. Phylogenetic analysis of protein sequences revealed a striking pattern of co-evolution between jawless fish ERV and their host, while shark ERV underwent ancient cross-class viral transmission with jawless fish, ray-finned fish, and amphibians. Nucleotide sequence analysis showed that jawless fish ERV emerged in the Palaeozoic period, relatively later than ray-finned fish ERV. Moreover, codon analysis suggested that the jawless fish ERV employed an infection strategy that mimics the host codon. The genealogical diversity of ERVs in the jawless fish genome highlights the importance of studying different viral species. Overall, our findings provide valuable insights into the evolution of retroviruses and their interactions with their hosts.

  • The sharks identified in the coastal waters of Korea are known to date to 9 Orders, 21 Families, 32 Genera and 47 Species. Therefore, recent studies and records of shark appearance in Korean waters were reviewed and organized. As a result, Halaelurus buergeri was separated from the Family Scyliorhinidae into the Family Pentanchidae based on the supraorbital crest absent on cranium above eyes. Accordingly, compared to the previous study, Family Pentanchidae, Genus Hexanchus, and 2 Species Hexanchus griseus and the Alopias superciliosus were added, resulting in a total of 49 species of sharks in 9 Orders, 22 Families, and 33 Genera in coastal waters of Korea. A list of these species, a search table, and the history of scientific name changes are provided, and proposed a new Korean name of 'Bul-beom-sang-eo-gwa' of the Family Pentanchidae.
