Isolation and Characterization of Chondroitin Sulfates from the Byproducts of Marine Organisms

  • By-products of marine organisms including salmon, skate, flatfish, and yellow goosefish were investigated to search for new source of chondroitin sulfate (CS). Agarose gel electrophoresis with chondroitinase depolymerization showed that purified chondroitin sulfate did not contain any other glycosaminoglycans. 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra were acquired to confirm the structure and purity. The average molecular weight ranging from 22 to 64 kDa was determined by high performance size exclusion chromatography. Disaccharide compositions and purities were determined by strong anion exchange-high performance liquid chromatography (SAX-HPLC) after chondroitinase ABC depolymerization. SAX-HPLC data exhibited that the purity was from $81.7{\pm}1.3$ to $114.2{\pm}2.5%$ and the yield was from 1.3 to 12.5%. All analytical results indicate that salmon cartilage, skate cartilage, and yellow goosefish bone could be promising sources of CS to substitute shark cartilage CS in commercial neutraceuticals.

  • Squalene is a linear triterpene formed via the MVA or MEP biosynthetic pathway and is widely distributed in bacteria, fungi, algae, plants, and animals. Metabolically, squalene is used not only as a precursor in the synthesis of complex secondary metabolites such as sterols, hormones, and vitamins, but also as a carbon source in aerobic and anaerobic fermentation in microorganisms. Owing to the increasing roles of squalene as an antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory agent, the demand for this chemical is highly urgent. As a result, with the exception of traditional methods of the isolation of squalene from animals (shark liver oil) and plants, biotechnological methods using microorganisms as producers have afforded increased yield and productivity, but a reduction in progress. In this paper, we first review the biosynthetic routes of squalene and its typical derivatives, particularly the squalene synthase route. Second, typical biotechnological methods for the enhanced production of squalene using microbial cell factories are summarized and classified. Finally, the outline and discussion of the novel trend in the production of squalene with several updated events to 2015 are presented.

  • 강원도(江原道) 원주시(原州市) 부론면(富論面) 법천리고분(法泉里古墳)(4호분(號墳))에서 출토된 생선뼈 중 종류를 확인 할 수 없었던 생선뼈 26점에 대한 잔존지방산 분석을 실시하였다. 앞서 분류한 4종류의 생선(조기, 상어, 준치, 민어)뼈에 대한 잔존지방산 분석 기준데이타와 비교하여 어류종류를 확인하고자 하였다. 분석은 가스크로마토그라피(Gas chromatography)를 이용하여 지방산을 분리하였고, 각각의 함량(含量)을 계산하여 시료별 지방산 분포패턴을 확인하였다. 지방산분포 데이타의 해석을 위해서 다변수분류법(多變數分類法)중 주성분분석법을 이용하였다.

명치시대(明治時代) 일본의 조선(朝鮮) 바다 조사 (On the Japanese Investigations for the Korean Sea during Meiji Period)

  • This study is to survey the Japanese investigations for Korean sea during Meiji period. Meiji government was eager to develop new fishing ground to provide the marine products to their people, to offer the job for their people and to accumulate the starting capital. They found that the Korean sea was abundant in shark, sea cucumber and ear shell. These products were valuable for Chinese foods. From 1870's, Japan Navy investigated Korean sea for military purpose and subsequently for fishery. The first investigation for Korean maritime products was The Circumstances for Catching Fish in Korean Sea by Sekizawa Akikiyo in 1893. He was the most famous specialist in fishery and insisted that Japanese fishermen must go to Korean sea and catch fishes. Meiji government accepted his opinion and pushed the policy sending fishermen to Korean sea. Meiji government enlarged the investigations and backed up the activities of fisherman and the organization for fishery in Korean sea. Especially, the investigations by The Association for Korean Sea Fishery were repeated and detailed(1897~1900). The Association intervened the conflicts between Korean and Japanese fishermen. At the same time, The Association investigated the attitudes of Korean people to Japanese. The Guidelines for Fishery in Korean Sea by Kuzuu Syuzo was also very detail, especially in the kinds of fishes in Korean sea. These investigations were supported by Meiji government or organizations helped by government.

  • 외인성 지방 흡인에 의한 지방성 폐렴은 대부분 양성의 경과를 취하지만, 본 증례에서처럼 드물게 심한 호흡 부전을 동반할 수도 있으며, 스테로이드 치료에 호전을 보인 1예를 경험하여 이를 보고하는 바이다.

IEEE802.11p WAVE 다이버시티 모뎀 개발 (Diversity modem for IEEE802.11p WAVE)

  • 본 논문에서는 IEEE 802.11p WAVE 모뎀을 위한 다이버시티 모뎀 구조를 제안하고 설계하였으며, 이를 실차에 장착하여 성능테스트를 수행하였다. 제안한 구조는 듀얼채널과 다이버시티 기능을 선택적으로 수행할 수 있으며, 선택적 안테나 다이버시티와 Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) 다이버시티 기능 중하나를 선택하여 수신할 수 있다. 개발된 구조는 HDL로 설계되어 Xillinx Kintex7보드를 이용하여 실도로에서 실차에 장착하여 테스트를 수행하여 성능을 검증하였다. 실험결과 개발된 다이버시티 모뎀은 단일 채널 모뎀에 비하여 안정적인 통신 성공률을 유지할 수 있으며, 전송거리도 30%이상 향상됨을 확인하였다.

돛새치 피부는 상어 피부처럼 마찰저항을 줄일 수 있을까? (Does the Sailfish Skin Reduce the Skin Friction Like the Shark Skin?)

  • The sailfish is the fastest sea animal, reaching its maximum speed of 110km/h. On its skin, a number of V-shaped protrusions pointing downstream exist. Thus, in the present study, the possibility of reducing the skin friction using its shape is investigated in a turbulent boundary layer. We perform a parametric study by varying the height and width of the protrusion, the spanwise and streamwise spacings between adjacent ones, and their overall distribution pattern, respectively. Each protrusion induces a pair of streamwsie vortices, producing low and high shear stresses at its center and side locations, respectively. These vortices also interact with those induced from adjacent protrusions. As a result, the drag is either increased or unchanged for all the cases considered. In some cases, the skin friction itself is reduced but total drag including the form drag on the protrusions is larger than that of a smooth surface. Since the shape of present protrusions is similar to that used by Sirovich and Karlsson [Nature 388, 753 (1997)] where V-shaped protrusions pointing upstream were considered, we perform another set of experiments following their study. However, we do not obtain any drag reduction even with random distribution of those V-shaped protrusion.

인도양 해역 우리나라 원양 연승어업의 어획물 종조성과 어획동향(2010-2015년) (Species Composition and Catch of Korean Tuna Longline Fisheries in the Indian Ocean from 2010 to 2015)

  • We analyzed scientific observer data to identify species composition and catch trends of Korean tuna longline fisheries in the Indian Ocean. The data were collected by Korean scientific observers onboard Korean tuna longline fishing vessels in the Indian Ocean from 2010 to 2015. The observers identified 94 species including 5 tuna, 6 billfish, 11 shark, 7 other fish, 5 seabird and 1 sea turtle. Albacore tuna Thunnus alalunga and southern bluefin tuna Thunnus maccoyii were the dominant tuna species, and swordfish Xiphias gladius were the most commonly captured billfish. During the survey periods, 87 seabirds were incidentally bycaught. Black-browed albatross Diomedea melanophris was the dominant seabird species in bycatch, especially in 2010. Cluster analysis showed difference in the species composition of catches between the eastern and western Indian Ocean.

  • Eel Anguilla japonica is an economically important inland culture fish species in East Asian countries, particularly in Korea, Japan, China, and Taiwan. In this study, the effects of feeding frequency on larval growth and survival rate were investigated. Eel larvae (average length, 6 mm) were fed a slurry-type diet containing shark eggs three, five, seven, or nine times per day. Survival rates differed significantly among the four experimental groups. Feeding frequencies of at least five and seven times a day were required until 15 and 30 days after hatching, respectively, to maintain an acceptable survival rate. Leptocephalus growth improved with increased feeding frequency until 15 days after hatching. The results suggest that providing an opportunity for early food intake enhances eel survival and growth in the early leptocephalus stage.

  • To analyze wedding feast dishes of royal prince (1651, 1696) of Choson Dynasty, studied Gare Dogam Euigwae. Historic book 'Gare Dogam Euigwae' discribed wedding feast dishes of king‘s Choson Dynasty. The results obtained from this study are as follows. Dishes were arranged in four kinds of table, the first one called the main table, the second the right side table, the third the left side table, the fourth the confronting side table. Dishes of main table were oil and honey pastry, and fruits (pine nuts, orange, dried persimmon, torreya nuts, dried chestnut, jujube). Dishes of the second table and the third table were oil and honey pastry, and small cake made of honey and rice with patterns pressed in it. Dishes of the fourth table were cooked vegetable (wild ginseng, platy-codon, radish, white gourd melon, ginger), dried slices of meat seasoned with spices (abalone, octopus, shark, pheasant), cooked meat (wild goose, fowl, egg, pheasant, abalone), and fried fish (roe deer, fish, duck, pigeon, sparrow). The main table (同牢大宴床) and the second table (右挾床) stand as a symbol for integrity. The third table (左挾床) symbolize longerity. The fourth table (面挾床) symbolize bearing many young and connubial felicity.
