  • This paper discussed the shape effect of ceramic support carrier in order to facilitate biomass immobilization. The shape of ceramic support carrier was modified hollow pipe type into hollow gear type. After seeding, microorganisms were attached in crevices where protection from shear forces or surfaces where easy to contact with support carrier surface. In case of hollow gear type carrier, initial attachment rate was faster than that of hollow pipe type and obtained thick biofilm. Synthetic wastewater(COD:75~880 mg/L, organic loading rate:0.36~4.22 kgCOD/㎥.d) was treated aerobic fixed bed biofilm reactor where 100% of the volume was filled with the ceramic carrier. COD removal efficiency of reactor filled with gear type support carrier was a little high withing 70 days, and then showed similar removal efficiency. It was found that highly loaded operation with up to 4.22 kgCOD/㎥.d was possible in both reactor. Total biomass amounts of pipe type was higher than gear type, however, attached biomass of gear type was higher than that of pipe type.

  • A major problems of Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) is torque ripple which causes undesirable acoustic noise and vibration. To reduce the torque ripple two different approaches are used. One is to modify a motor geometry, the other is to manipulate motor current to improve performance. This paper presents modifications of the rotor pole shape which reduces the torque ripple.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the transformed fashion design based on the principles of visual design. Wucius Wong classified the kinds of transformation techniques as internal variation, external variation, extension, superimposition, transfiguration, dislocation, and distortion, which create and modify the shape. And the kinds of shape grammar for transformation are rule deletion, rule addition, and rule transformation, which are applied to interpretate for the change of wearing, the specialization & development of clothes, and the avant-garde styles in subculture groups. The formative meanings of the transformed fashion design are multi-transformation with complexity, formal beauty pretending confusion, and the basis for new trend.

  • In most shipbuilding company, cutting procedure is proceed by cutting machine which run by CNC(Computer Numerical Code) data. In our cutting process, all CNC data is created by our nesting post processor system automatically. Among them, in case that cutting piece in the remnant plate, our system creates only one piece CNC data. Because remnant plate is not typical shape, and ship designers don't know remnant plate shape and quantity. In can happen some merit and good point if we modify 1:1 piece NC data by shorten cutting path, reducing cutting time or re-arrangement piece. For modifying cutting data, outside workers have to call to ship designer or have to go to NC control room where control the CNC system and cutting machine. It makes stop work process, and it waste time. In this paper, we introduce a program that can modify and replace 1:1 NC data with continuous or common NC data automatically.

  • In this paper, the method to modify a surface through three dimensional vector field technique is presented, In this method two guide surfaces are required as a shape reference. One is the shape of original surface, the other is the target shape for the result surface. Proposed method is consists of two steps. The first step is to calculate the mapping points on original and target guide surfaces so that the shape error may be minimized. The second step is to construct the smooth vector field from mapping points of the first step. The developed method is applied to shoe design system which makes the surface modeling very easy and effective.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the shape control of plates via embedded shape memory alloy (SMA) wires. An extensive body of literature proposes the use of SMA wires to actively modify the shape or stiffness of a structure; in most cases, however, the study focuses on modeling and little experimental data is available. In this work, a simple proof of concept specimen was built by attaching four prestrained SMA wires to one side of a carbon fiber laminate plate strip. The specimen was clamped at one end and tested in an environmental chamber, measuring the tip displacement and the SMA temperature. At heating, actuation of the SMA wires bends the plate; at cooling deformation is partially recovered. The specimen was actuated a few times between two fixed temperatures $T_c$ and $T_h$, whereas in the last actuation a temperature $T_f$ > $T_h$ was reached. Contrary to most model predictions, in the first actuation the transformation temperatures are significantly higher than in the following cycles, which are stable. Moreover, if the temperature $T_h$ is exceeded, two separate actuations occur during heating: the first follows the path of the stable cycles; the second, starting at $T_h$, is similar to the first cycle. An interpretation of the phenomenon is given using some differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) measurements. The observed behavior emphasizes the need to build a more comprehensive constitutive model able to include these effects.

  • Two aspects of the design of a small-scale smart wing are addressed in this work, related to the ability of the wing to modify its cross section assuming the shape of two different airfoils and to the possibility of deflecting the profiles near the trailing edge in order to obtain hingeless control surfaces. The actuation is provided by one-way shape memory alloy wires eventually coupled to springs, Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) being among the most promising materials for this kind of applications. The points to be actuated along the profiles and the displacements to be imposed are selecetd so that they satisfactorily approximate the change from an airfoil to the other and to result in an adequate deflection of the control surface; the actuators and their performances are designed so that an adequate wing stiffness is guaranteed, in order to prevent excessive deformations and undesired airfoil shape variations due to aerodynamic loads. The effect of the pressure distributions, calculated by way of the XFOIL software, and of the actuators loads, is estimated by FE analyses of the loaded wing. Two prototypes are then realised incorporating the variable airfoil and the hingeless aileron features respectively, and the verification of their shapes in both the actuated and non-actuated states, supported by image analysis techniques, confirms that interesting results are achievable with the proposed lay out and design considerations.

  • The flow at the top surface of the hopper is of particular industrial interest. Previously, the velocity distribution inside the hopper was predicted using the simple, void and spot models, which are equations for the particle flow field. However, because these equations cannot predict the velocity distribution at the top surface, a new equation has been recently proposed. This study employed the discrete element method with the changed shape of the particles. Based on the results, the shape of the particle had no effect on the discharge angle and shape of the velocity distribution; however, it greatly affected the size of the velocity distribution and bed thickness of the flowing particles. Therefore, in the future, it is necessary to modify the theoretical equation by considering the shape of the particles.

  • Design modification of the stamping die for the upper member of a front end module carrier is carried out in order to improve the surface quality of the final product. The small inferiority induced by wrinkling near the wall of the upper member has been inspected after the draw-forming process. The finite element analysis is pursued with the whole geometry in order to consider the complicated shape. The simulation shows that the excess metal is developed by the irregular contact of the blank the tool and it remains after the final stroke. This paper proposes two guidelines for the modification. One is to add the draw-bead near the critical region in order to increase the draw-in force. The other is to modify the tool shape such as the forming shape at the wall in order to absorb the excess metal before the final stroke. Simulation results show that the proposed guidelines both guarantee the improved surface quality.

  • The purpose of this study was to modify a Flared Skirt for women according to the somatotype of lower body. The subjects for the wear test were 3 students, who were in mean${\pm}1{\sigma}$ each somatotype. As seen in the study, it was found out that there was a difference in three dimensional shape of the lower part of the body even in the group of whom the body heights, measured by Martin's system, are alike. Due to such a difference in the three dimensional shape of the lower part of the body, it was found out to be a difference in drapability of the flare skirts. In order to have better fitness of the lower part of the body and to raise the visual effect, therefore, it is suggested that there need to develop a new model of the flare skirts considering three dimensional shape of the lower part of the body for the wearer or to take complementary measures for each body shape in case of applying traditional model.
