  • A design methodology is applied for manufacturing the valve-spring retainer component. The design criterion is the forging load within the available press limit. Also, the final product should not have any geometrical defect. The rigid-plastic TEM has been applied to simulate the conventional five-stage manufacturing processes, which include mainly backward extrusion and heading process. Simulations of one step process from selected stocks to the final product shape are performed for a possibly better process than the conventional one.

  • Recently, Tailor Welded Blanks(TWB) is widely used in automotive industry since the transformation characteristics of its material can be changed. However, clearance between welding surface becomes the important factor which affect the quality of the laser weld, causing difficulties in preparing the sheet. The objective of this paper is to systematically evaluate the effects of previously presented fracture criterion and shearing condition on precise mechanical shearing simulation result. Also predict the optimum shearing condition, effect of shearing condition such as clearance and punch radius on the shear plane shape was evaluated.

  • To perform the Maritime Safety Audi Scheme, $10^{-4}$ was constantly applied without adjustment when evaluating the proximity of the fairway. The necessity of applying the different aberrancy probabilities from the different proximity of the fairway depending on the shape of the route and the size of the ship was validated using marine simulations. Marine simulation was performed to evaluate the validity of statistical analysis-based aberrancy probability according to the different shapes of routes and ship size presented in the previous study. As results, the validity of the criterion of the statistical analysis-based aberrancy probability was confirmed by comparing with the results of simulation-based aberrancy probabilities. The results support that the aberrancy probabilities by the types of a vessel could be different based on the type and size of vessels. The results motivate that further investigation is required to find the reasonable criteria of the aberrancy probabilities for the maritime traffic safety audit according to the fairway shape and the size of the vessel.

  • In this paper, a method for selection of the optimal feature vectors is proposed for the classification of closed 2D shapes using the bispectrum of a contour sequence. The bispectrum based on third order cumulants is applied to the contour sequences of the images to extract feature vectors for each planar image. These bispectral feature vectors, which are invariant to shape translation, rotation and scale transformation, can be used to represent two-dimensional planar images, but there is no certain criterion on the selection of the feature vectors for optimal classification of closed 2D images. In this paper, a new method for selecting the optimal bispectral feature vectors based on the variances of the feature vectors. The experimental results are presented using eight different shapes of aircraft images, the feature vectors of the bispectrum from five to fifteen and an weighted mean fuzzy classifier.

  • Fasteners are used to join the various electronic products and machines. So, the quality and reliability of the fastener are strongly requested. In this study, the analyses of the multi-stage cold forging of TORX screws for storage parts are carried out. In manufacturing of TORX screws, crack and folding defects are observed. Therefore, the analysis is focused on the prediction of the defects. Based on the analysis results, the upper die and process conditions are redesigned to reduce the defects. The upper die shape for preform forming is redesigned to prevent folding and sharp shape change. The Cockroft-Latham damage criterion is introduced to predict the crack initiation. Analysis results shows that the maximum Cockroft-Latham damage value is decreased by 40% in the forming using the modified upper die.

  • This paper resents a discrete-time model of an edge-following with accommodation force control. Since an irregular workpiece shape causes disturbances to the system while following an edge, the use of preview control is proposed to improve the system performance. The preview control employs future information of the workpiece contour shape, and it can be developed by LQ-optimal control principles. This study provides a general method how to utilize the local future information obtained by the finite preview to minimize an optimality criterion evaluated over a problem duration. The force controller is designed based on the preview control scheme, and then implemented on a VME-based computer. Experimental results using an industrial robot show that the preview control system achieves faster tracking speed and better force regulation than the conventional nonpreview control system.

  • In order to use effectively a machinery part with fillet, it is necessary to determine a proper fillet shape in design step, Study of such problem by fracture mechanical criterion is rare. So, this paper focuses on the design of fillet radius in fracture mechanical aspect. Finite element method was used to obtain crack tip stress intensity factor. Stress intensity factor was calculated by COD(crack opening displacement0method proposed by Ingraffea and Manu. The parameter used in this study are thickness ration, filet radium and crack length . If fillet radius increase , crack propagation may be accelerated. Critical crack length is inversely proportional to fillet radius.

  • A binary segmentation procedure is a simple recursive approach to detect clusters and provide inferences for the study space when the shape of the clusters and the number of clusters are unknown. The procedure involves a sequence of nested hypothesis tests of a single cluster versus a pair of distinct clusters. The size and the shape of the clusters evolve as the procedure proceeds. The procedure allows for various growth clusters and for arbitrary baseline densities which govern the form of the hypothesis tests. A real tree data is used to highlight the procedure.

  • A study has been made on the quantification and evaluation of fabric pilling using two-dimensional and three-dimensional hybrid imaging methods. Two-dimensional imaging method was good for some samples while three-dimensional measurement method for others, according to the properties of their base fabric. Various image processing techniques as well as three-dimensional data processing algorithms were applied for the extraction of pills from measured data and a series of shape parameters have been defined for the objective evaluation of fabric pilling. An evaluation criterion that is compatible with the conventional evaluation method has been proposed by applying the new evaluation method to the current photographic standards.

  • Human dental arches are very various in their sizes and dimensions as well as forms, so, it is very difficult to describe the shape of human dental arches as a criterion, and, further, to construct the preformed arch wires fit to them. In this study for solving these problems, the shape of eighty Korean normal lower dental arches were studied, and nine theoretical two-parameter catenary curves were derived, which were representative of all of the sample. Test were conducted which demonstrated that these nine cattenary curves would correspond with a reasonable degree of accuracy to all of the dental arches, lower and upper.
