The diesel engine and reduction gear combination is one of the common propulsion system in a naval vessel. Since the diesel engine has torsional vibration caused by reciprocating motion of the mass and gas pressure force of the cylinder, high cycle torsional fatigue can be occurred. Therefore, ROK navy restricts the maximum stress of the propulsion shaft according to MIL G 17859D. In this paper, the root cause for the failure of the diesel engine and reduction gear connecting shaft occurred in typical naval vessel is investigated based on the measured bending and torsional moment according to MIL G 17859D procedure.

Generally the noise and vibration characteristics of 4WD vehicle is closely related to the characteristics of driveline such as bending mode, torsional mode, unbalance and nonuniformity of propeller shaft. In this paper the 4WD vehicle which has body vibration problem in high speed driving condition was tested. The sources of the body vibration and its transfer path are investigated by experimental approach. According to the experimental assessment, the body vibration is caused by the nonuniformity of joint of propeller shaft. And this paper presents a kinematic model of a vehicle driveline for the optimization of a driveline characteristics. Finally the optimized result of the drive line has been verified through the experiment.
Analogous problem for a gear dynamics where helical gears excite logitudinal forces in the shaft is studied. These shaft forces excite the supporting gear housing through bearing, causing structural vibration. In this study, shaft is modeled as a rod, and bearing is modeled by a massless spring. A simple model for gear housing is a clamped circular plate. To model this force transmission, the transfer functions from the shaft to a clamped circular plate are analytically derived by using the spectral method and four-pole parameter. Finally, radiated noise is computed, using the acoustic relations due to plate surface vibration.

An analytical procedure on the base of the substructure synthesis and assumed modes method is developed to investigate the flexibility effect of bladed disk assembly on vibrational modes of flexible rotor system. In modeling the system, Coriolis forces, gyroscopic moments, and centrifugal stiffening effects are taken into account. The coupled vibrations between the shaft and bladed disk are then extensively investigated through the numerical simulation of simplified models, with varying the shaft rotational speed and the pretwist and stagger angles of the blade. It is found that the Coriolis and inertia forces and the inertia torque, which are induced by the one nodal diameter modes of the bladed disk and vary depending upon the stagger and pretwist angles, lead to the coupled motions of the shaft and the bladed disk.

Torque fluctuation of the engine and angular velocity variation of propeller shaft is the main excitation source for torsional vibration in the vehicle driveline. Experimental model for engine system is constructed with 4 cylinder 4 cycle diesel engine including Motor-Propeller Shaft-Axle-Wheel system. The angular velocity is measured by magnetic pickup and FV converter at the engine flywheel and propeller shaft. This paper presents the theoretical mechanism of these excitation sources and it is identified by the experimental methods.

The torsional and axial vibrations of shaft system have been calculated independently because of both the limitation of computing time and the complexity of crankshaft model. In actual system, however, the torsional and axial vibrations are coupled. Therefore, in recent, many works in the coupled vibration analysis have been done to find out the more exact dynamic behavior of shaft system. The crankshaft model is very important in the vibration analysis of shaft system because most of excitation forces act on the crankshaft. It is, however, difficult to establish an exact model of crankshaft since its shape is very complex. In this work, an efficient method is proposed to construct the stiffness matrix of crankshaft using a finite element model of half crankthrow. The proposed and existing methods are compared by applying to both a simple thick beam with circular cross section and an actual crankshaft.
In this paper, the vibration of a rotating shaft with a thin rigid disk is considered. It is assumed that the shaft has uniform, circular cross-section. Based on the Timoshenko-beam theory, the transverse displacements and slops in two lateral directions, the axial displacement, and the torsional deformation are considered. The spectral element method is used for the vibration analysis of the rotating shaft with a thin rigid disk, which is modeled by two shaft elements and a thin rigid disk element.

With the trend towards high propulsive level, increasing ship's dimensions and heavier shaft systems supported by the hull structure of relatively stiffness in modern ships, transverse vibrations of propulsion shaft system have become one of the problems that should be predicted in the early design stage. Regarding transverse vibrations, coupling terms such as oilfilm, gyroscope and hydrodynamic effect of the propeller exist between the vertical and horizontal vibration, furthermore for the shaft system with strut and bossing its physical properties incorporated with hull structure must be considered. In order to predict the transverse vibratory condition of the propulsion shaft and take some appropriate countermeasures, it is necessary to make a fairly strict estimation of the vibratory behaviours of it. In this paper, theoretical approach using the finite element method is investigated to calculate natural frequencies and vibration modes for coupled free transverse vibrations of shaft system in two planes. Based on the method investigated a digital computer program is developed and is applied to calculate the above-mentioned vibrations of an experimental model shaft system. The results of the calculation are compared with those of the experimental measurements and they show an acceptable agreement.

A shaft of a reciprocating compressor receives bending force by piston, which makes movement of the shaft. The movement of the shaft affects durability and becomes a source of noise. In this paper, a cylinder is modeled by considering motion of a suction and discharge valve. The journal bearing is modeled by Bernoulli's equation. The trajectory of shaft which is considered cylinder and journal bearing can be calculated by finite element method. It will help a design of shaft to increase durability and reduce noise.
Bi-spectrum is a tool in the signal processing for identification of non-linear dynamic behvaiour in systems, and well-known for stationary system where components are non-linearly interacting. Breathing of a crack during shaft rotation is also exhibits a non-linear behaviour. The crack is known to generate 2X (twice the machine RPM) and higher harmonics in addition to 1X component in the shaft response during its rotation. Misaligned shaft also shows similar such feature as a crack in a shaft. The bi-spectrum method has now been applied on a small rotating rig to observe its features. The bi-spectrum results are found to be encouraging to distinguish these faults based on few experiments conducted on a small rig. The results are presented here.
