  • Purpose: To identify the clinical characteristics of SRY-negative male patients and genes related to male sex reversal, we performed a retrospective study using cases of 46,XX testicular disorders of sex development with a review of the literature. Materials and Methods:SRY-negative cases of 46,XX testicular disorders of sex development referred for cytogenetic analysis from 1983 to 2013 were examined using clinical findings, seminal analyses, basal hormone profiles, conventional cytogenetic analysis and polymerase chain reaction. Results: Chromosome analysis of cultured peripheral blood cells of 8,386 individuals found 19 cases (0.23%) with 46,XX testicular disorders of sex development. The SRY gene was confirmed to be absent in three of these 19 cases (15.8%). Conclusion: We report three rare cases of SRY-negative 46,XX testicular disorders of sex development. Genes on autosomes and the X chromosome that may have a role in sex determination were deduced through a literature review. These genes, through differences in gene dosage variation, may have a role in sex reversal in the absence of SRY.

  • Platorchestia monodi (Mateus et al., 1986), the beach hopper, commonly lives in sea shores and was previously reported only from the Atlantic regions, such as Mid-Atlantic islands, Brazilian coast, and Israel. We present the first record of this species in the Pacific region. The present species can be clearly distinguished from related species by the shapes of gnathopods 1-2 and development of sexual dimorphism in antenna 2 and pereopod 7. Descriptions of the diagnostic characteristics of the species are provided on the text. In addition, this paper also provided the partial sequence of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene of the species for its molecular characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the subjective experiences of female college students about how they accept, resist, and interpret their gender identities and roles. The research data were autobiographic essays reflecting research participants' gender identities internalization process. Thirty essays were chosen, and carried by qualitative content analysis. It turned out that most of these female students were not blessed their birth among their family members only because of their sexes. On the one hand, these female students were restricted their behaviors by their sexes in their daily lives such as responsibility on household work, not permitting drinking, late returning home, and sexual behavior before marriage. On the other hand, they sometimes took advantage of their sexes for self-rationalization. But they were proud of the fact that they will be mothers someday. It seemed that motherhood was center for their female identity.

  • Golden hamsters reproduce in a limited time of a year. Their sexual activities are active in summer but inactive in winter during which day length does not exceed night time and environmental conditions are severe to them. The reproductive activities are determined by the length of light in a day (photoperiod). Melatonin is synthesized and secreted only at night time from the pineal gland. Duration of elevated melatonin is longer in winter than summer, resulting in gonadal regression. The present study aimed at the influences of continuous melatonin treatments impinging on the gonadal function in male golden hamsters. Animals received empty or melatonin-filled capsules for 10 weeks. They were divided into long photoperiod (LP) and short photoperiod (SP). All the animals maintained in LP (either empty or melatonin-filled capsules) showed large testes, implying that melatonin had no effects on testicular functions. Animals housed in SP displayed completely regressed testes. But animals kept in SP and implanted with melatonin capsules exhibited blockage of full regression by SP. These results suggest that constant release of melatonin prohibits the regressing influence of SP.

  • The presence of polyostotic fibrous dysplasia of bone, hyperpigmented skin macules, and precocious sexual development in children is known as the McCune-Albright syndrome. In addition to the described in McCune-Albright syndrome, other endocrinopathies have been reported including hyperthyroidism, acromegaly, Cushing syndrome and vitamin D resistant rickets. The case describes a 6-year-old boy showing bony deformities due to polyostotic fibrous dysplasia, hyperpigmented skin macules, hyperthyroidism and vitamin D resistant rickets. The purpose of this report is to describe a patient of McCune-Albright syndrome with vitamin D resistant rickets which is very rare.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors related to High School Students' Attitudes(prejudice) toward HIV-infected classmates. 980 self-administrated questions were completed by high school male students. Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis was performed with the following independent variables: knowledge about HIV/AIDS transmission, prevention, and HIV-antibody, interests, preventive behaviors, predicting level to peer HIV-related risk behavior, knowledge about information sites, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, self-efficacy to prevention, related to AIDS/HIV, thought about premarital sexual behavior and homosexuality. The Regression Model is significant(R2=.1719, F=33.517, p<0.05) The significant factors are knowledge about HIV/AIDS transmission, intention of the preventive behaviors, knowledge of information sites, perceived severity, ideas about homosexuality, predicting level of peer HIV-related risk behavior. The results of this study provide information for effective education program development and health policy about AIDS prevention and management.

  • The azooxanthellate soft coral Dendronephthya suensoni (Holem, 1895) is distributed mainly around Jejudo Island, Korea. This species was determined as gonochoric with a sex ratio of 2:1 (female:male). Both female and male colonies have one gametogenic cycle a year. The annual reproductive cycle of D. suensoni is dependent on the seawater temperature. In particular, reproduction of the male colony showed a higher positive correlation between seawater temperature and the mean diameter of the spermaries. Gametogenesis in females and males took 6 months and 12 months, respectively. The mean diameter of a mature oocyte was $249.29\;{\pm}\;36.24\;{\mu}m$, with a maximum size of $354.45\;{\mu}m$. Spawning could have occurred in the fall after the seawater temperature began to decrease.

  • All copepodid stages and free-swimming adults of Ergasilus hypomesi Yamaguti collected from plankton samples from a brackish lake in Korea are described. The antennule remains a four-segmented appendage until copepodid V. The antenna of copepodid I carries a vestigial exopod. Sexual dimorphism first appears at copepodid IVwhose males bear primodial maxillipeds. Leg 5 also is sexually dimorphic from copepodid IV onwards, with its free segment bearing three setae in the female and two setae in the male. Morphological features of some appendages appearing during copepodid development are discussed. It is noticed that the early copepodids of the Ergasilidae show the characteristic setation on the biramous legs and proximal segments of the antennule.

  • This study is an evaluation research which examines the effectiveness of the Marriage Enrichment Program for Middle-Aged Couples(MEPM), This program focuses on the marital dyadic relationship as a family life education The MEPM was developed to strengthen the marital relationships and to improve the potential for individuals and couples. For the effectiveness of the study the author conducted previous survey research with a literature review. The Marriage Enrichment Program was delivered to eight middle-aged couples at Hotel Hilton in Kyung Joo on June 5-6 1995. Through statistical analysis the effectiveness of the MEPM was significant in the areas of couple communication problem solving ability sexual relationship accptance for the value differences and mutual respect. The study also found that changes in thinking is much slower than learning for the new skills and knowledge.

  • This study develops and evaluates a mother-child relationship improvement program for poor female-headed families. The program consists of seven sessions including various physical and educational activities. The goals of this program are (1) enhancing emotional support, health, and physical intimacy among the female heads of households and their children, (2) understanding each other's wants and personalities, and (3) facilitating the communication skills and increasing knowledge on adolescent sexual development. Four mothers of poor female-headed families and four adolescent children of them were participated in the program. The result of the program evaluation shows that this program had positive effects on improving mother-child relationship and their Interaction.
