The purpose of this study is to efficiently treat the sewage sludge discharged from sewage treatment plants and evaluate the feasibility of the manufacture of lightweight aggregates(LWA) using a large quantity of sewage sludge. Sintered lightweight aggregate from sewage sludge is experimentally manufactured with various mass ratios of clay to sewage sludge by a pilot plant, and is tested for density, water absorption and crushing value. Their physical properties are compared to those of a commercial sintered lightweight aggregate. As a result, an experimentally manufactured lightweight aggregate is similar or superior in physical properties to the commercial lightweight aggregate. The manufactured lightweight aggregate could be used for structural concrete and non-structural concrete.

Aged sewage sludge with food waste leachate sludge or paper mill sludge was fed to earthworm (Eisenia fetida) populations and the effect of it on feeding and growth rate of earthworm population was investigated. Feeding rate of earthworm population on sewage sludge aged with food waste leachate sludge for 30 days was higher than that aged for 10 and 20 days. At 90 days after feeding, the density of earthworm population decreased regardless of aging period. And earthworm population growth to next generation was blocked by sewage sludge. The feeding rate and the density of earthworm population aged with paper mill sludge for 20 days were higher than that on sewage sludges aged for 10 and 30 days. Until 90 days after feeding, the density of earthworm population increased regardless of aging period of sewage sludge, however, since then decreased. There were comparatively higher feeding rate and growth rate of earthworm population on the sewage sludge which had been mixed with paper mill sludge and aged for 20 days, which rendered the probable pretreating method for vermicomposting sewage sludge.
Objectives: In order to review both the effects of sewage sludge dewaterability and deodorizing ability in the existing advanced sewage treatment process, BIO-CLOD (a solidified mixture of 10% Bacillus concentrate and inorganics) was used as an inorganic conditioner effective for deodorization treatment in addition to the removal of organic matter and nutritive salts. Methods: Sludge dewaterability was evaluated using specific resistance to filtration (SRF) experiments with six agitators and two types of commercially available BIO-CLOD; one that is made by grinding solid matter (powdered BIO-CLOD) and one that has been obtained by sieving a separation with a particle diameter of 100 mesh (100 mesh BIO-CLOD). For deodorization odor treatment experiments, 20 g of commercially available solid BIO-CLOD was submerged in four liters of sewage sludge and mixed and agitated for 45 days. Results: When BIO-CLOD was injected into sewage sludge to experimentally compare specific resistance to filtration (SRF), the optimum amount of BIO-CLOD to be injected was shown to be 2% w/v and the SRF value in this case was $1.35{\times}10^{12}m/kg$. pH changes following BIO-CLOD injection were within 6.5-7.0. By 14 days after submerging BIO-CLOD into the sewage sludge to evaluate its deodorizing ability, $H_2S$ decreased by 68% and methyl mercaptan decreased by 74%. By 45 days after the submergal, both items decreased by 100%, indicating deodorizing ability. Conclusion: To compare the levels of dewaterablity of sewage sludge at different particle sizes of inorganic conditioner, powdered BIO-CLOD, particle size 100 mesh BIO-CLOD, and bentonite were tested. It could be seen that as the powdered BIO-CLOD increased, the precipitability increased up to 62% in 30 minutes. As an inorganic conditioner, BIO-CLOD was identified as a stable sludge conditioner that does not affect pH.

This study investigated to recycle geobond and ash produced in thesewage sludge incinerator using reduction/stabilization. Nonsintering process was performed by binding cement (High Early Strength Portland cement, Micro cement), geobond and sand mixed with sewage sludge ash (SSA). Chemical ingradients of the sewage sludge ash was mainly composed of $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$, CaO and others, which were similar to those of the each binders consisting High Early Strength Portland cement, Micro cement and geobond. Results showed that unconfined the long term compressive strength could be obtained components of sewage sludge ash. It exceeded more than double score 64.6 MPa of the Korean standard ($22.54MPa=229.7kg/cm^2$). Microstructure of solidified block for the different admixture was related to the compressive strength according to SEM analysis. Optimum mixing range of the sewage sludge ash to each binders were found to be 10~40% which can widly safely regulate the confined a long term compressive strength. The best binder of long term compressive strengh was revealed Geobond more than High Early Strength Portland cement and Micro cement. This study revealed the sewage sludge ash can be partial replacement of the inorganic binder & application block for recycling.
This study was performed to assess the possibility of application of sewage sludge which is the side-product from domestic sewage treatment plant to the materials for biodiesels by investigating the yields and composition of the lipids and fatty acid methyl esters(FAMEs) from soxhlet extraction and in-situ transesterification. As the results, yields of in-situ transesterification were higher than soxhlet extraction. In comparison by sewage sludge type, yields of sewage sludge mixed nightsoil or livestock were higher than a single sewage sludge. And maximum yield showed up to 14 wt%. Fatty acid composition of extracted lipids and synthesized FAMEs consists of palmitic acid(C16:0), palmitoleic acid(C16:1), stearic acid(C18:0), oleic acid(C18:1), and linoleic acid(C18:2).

Dumping of waste sludge to ocean will be prohibited in Jananuary, 2012. Thus, various methods of sludge recycling are intensively studied. To present new way of sewage sludge recycling method, feasibility of making porous biological support media was investigated. Porous biological support media was made of sludge cake from sewage treatment plant and loess. They were mixed in varying ratio and burnt in high temperature to ensure sufficient mechanical strength. It was evaluated that about 67% of sewage sludge were ignitible. The ignitible portion play an important role in making pore in biomedia during ignition process. It was evaluated that optimum mixing ratio of loess to sludge cake was 25% in respect of compressive strength. In results of observation using scanning electron microscope (SEM), inner structure of biomedia become simple when the contents of loess are increased.
This study was performed to compare the effects of rice straw and towage sludge cake as bulking materials on temperature, pH, weight and volume reduction, porosity, C/N ratio, salinity, and conductivity in aerobic composting of food wastes. Volume ratios of food wastes to rice straw in reactor control, RS-1, RS-2, RS-3 and RS-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Weight ratios of food wastes to sewage sludge rake in reactor control, SL-1, SL-2, SL-3 and SL-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Reactors were operated for 24 days with 1 hour stirring by 1 rpm and 2 hours aeration per day. The values of pH of food waters, rice straw and sewage sludge cake were 4.39, 7.40 and 5.79, respectively. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to rice straw resulted in the high reaction temperature and the fast weight and volume reduction rates. The lowering of the weight ratio of food wastes to sewage sludge cake resulted in the slow weight and volume reduction rates. C/N ratio in control was larger than that in rice straw containing reactors, and that in rice straw containing reactors was larger than that in sewage sludge cake containing reactors. Salinity and conductivity in reactors were condensed and increased by reaction days.
The results of an experimental investigation on the co-firing characteristics and slagging behavior of dried and hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge, sub-bituminous coal, and wood pellet in a fluidized bed were presented. Combustion tests were conducted in a lab-scale bubbling fluidized bed system at the uniform fuel-air equivalence ratio, air flow rate, and initial bed temperature to measure bed temperature distribution and combustion gas composition. 4 different fuel blending cases were prepared by mixing sewage sludge fuels with coal and wood pellet with the ratio of 50 : 50 by the heating value. $NO_x$ was mostly NO than $NO_2$ and measured in the range of 400 to 600 ppm in all cases. $SO_2$ was considered to be affected mostly by the sulfur content of the sewage sludge fuels. The cases of hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge mixture showed slightly less $SO_2$ emission but higher fuel-N conversion than the dried sewage sludge mixing cases. The result of fly ash composition analysis implied that the sewage sludge fuels would increase the possibility of slagging/fouling considering the contents of alkali species, such as Na, K, P. Between the two different sewage sludge fuels, dried sewage sludge fuel was expected to have the more severe impact on slagging/fouling behavior than hydrothermal carbonization sewage sludge fuel.

Sewage sludge has been widely used as an organic fertilizer in agriculture. However, sewage sludge can cause serious malodor problems resulting from the decomposition of organic compounds in anaerobic conditions. The malodor of sewage sludge mainly occurs due to a low carbon to nitrogen ratio (C/N), high moisture, and low temperature, which are ideal conditions for ammonia emissions. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the reduction of the odor-causing ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) in sewage sludge by co-application of microbes and methanol (MeOH). The physico-chemical properties of the municipal sewage sludge showed that the odor was mainly caused by a higher NH3-N content (2932.2 mg L-1). Supplementation with MeOH (20%) as a carbon source in the sewage sludge significantly reduced the NH3-N up to 34.2% by increasing C/N ratio. Furthermore, the sewage sludge was treated with the NH3-N reducing and plant growth promoting (PGP) bacteria Stenotrophomonas rhizophila SRCM 116907. The treatment with S. rhizophila SRCM 116907 significantly increased the seedling vigor index of Lolium perenne (10.3%) and Chrysanthemum burbankii (42.4%). The findings demonstrate that supplementing sewage sludge with methanol significantly reduces ammonia emissions, thereby mitigating malodor problems. Overall, the study highlights the potential of using a microbial and methanol approach to improve the quality of sewage sludge as an organic fertilizer and promote sustainable agriculture.
Geotextile tube technology has been perceived as an economical solution for liquid sludge treatment, and analyzing its consolidation behavior is necessary to be able to evaluate the dewatering capabilities of large geotextile tubes filled with contaminated soil, tailings, sewage sludge, and so on. The objectives of this study are to present a method that can adequately convey the consolidation behavior of geotextile tubes filled with sewage sludge, and to investigate the effects of various geotextile tube consolidation parameters. In this study, variable coefficients of consolidation are utilized to analyze the consolidation process of geotextile tubes filled with sewage sludge. The consolidation solution was verified by comparing the measured and predicted data from a hanging bag test conducted in the literature. After verifying the proposed solution, the consolidation parameters of a geotextile tube composed of a woven polypropylene outer layer and a non-woven polypropylene layer filled sewage sludge were obtained. Using the obtained parameters, the consolidation behavior of a large-scale composite geotextiles tube was predicted.
