This survey was conducted to observe the prevalence of blood parasites in slaughtered cattle included Korean native cattle, Charolias, Hereford, Aberdeenangus and Holstein breeds in the Western area of Kyeongnam. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The prevalence of T sergenti was shown 71.8% as 395 heads of a total of 550 heads examined and from Jaunary to November the monthly prevalence of T sergenti was shown the range of 61.1% to 84% except 38.5% in December. The other blood parasites included Babesia and Anaplasma were not detected from the blood samples except Setaria spp microfilariae. 2. The distribution of parasitaemia levels of T sergenti in positive cattle was shown 93.9% in the range of 1~10/1000 rbc, 4.1% in 11~20, 1.3% in 21~30 and 0.8% above the range of 31. 3. The pervalence of T sergenti by breeds of slaughtered cattle was shown 71.2% in Korean native cattle, 72.7% in Charolias, 78.3% in Hereford and 81. 8% in others (Aberdeen-angus and Holstein) respectively. Also the parasitaemia levels in these cattle were shown higher levels in imported cattle included Charolias, Hereford, Aberdeen-angus and Holstein breeds comparing with Korean native cattle. 4. The prevalence of Setaria spp microfilariae in slaughtered cattle was shown 6.9% and by monthly prevalence of the parasite was shown higher in March, April and May compared with June, July, August and October. But in the winter season included January, February, November and December the parasite was not detected from the blood samples. 5. The distribution of parasitaemia levels of Setaria spp microfilariae per ml of blood was shown 65.8% in the range of 1~50, 13.2% in 51~100 and 10.5% in 101~200 and above the range of 201, respectively.
The numbers of individual Setaria species in the peritoneal cavities of Korean cattle were estimated. The worms were tentatively identified under light microscopy, and then precisely classified by SEM on the basis of unique features at the anterior and posterior ends of the adult worms. The positive rate of Setaria species was 34.2% out of 1,074 Korean cattle surveyed; that of S. digitata was 25.1%, S. marshalli 2.9% and both species 6.2%, respectively. Out of a total of 1,254 worms collected, 66.8% were female and 19.1% were male S. digitota; 9.2% were female and 5.0% were male S. marshalli, respectively. The average length of S. marshalli was somewhat longer than that of S. digitota S. marshalli was documented for the first time in Korea.
Ocular setariases of cattle were reported but those of equine hosts have never been reported in the Republic of Korea (Korea). We found motile worms in the aqueous humor of 15 horses (Equus spp.) from 12 localities in southern parts of Korea between January 2004 and November 2017. After the affected animals were properly restrained under sedation and local anesthesia, 10 ml disposable syringe with a 16-gauge needle was inserted into the anterior chamber of the affected eye to successfully remove the parasites. The male worm that was found in 7 of the cases showed a pair of lateral appendages near the posterior terminal end of the body. The papillar arrangement was 3 pairs of precloacal, a pair of adcloacal, and 3 pairs of postcloacal papillae, plus a central papilla just in front of the cloaca. The female worms found in the eyes of 8 horses were characterized by the tapering posterior terminal end of the body with a smooth knob. Worms were all identified as Setaria digitata (von Linstow, 1906) by the morphologic characteristics using light and electron microscopic observations. This is the first blindness cases of 15 horses infected with S. digitata (Nematoda: Filarioidea) in Korea.
To supply seeds with a good quality as plant materials for herbicide screening and to know whether the germination characteristics could be associated with a differential response to herbicides, germination characteristics and differential responses to herbicides were investigated with 3 species of a genus Setaria ; Yellow foxtail(Setaria glauca P. Beauv, SETGL), Giant foxtail(Setaria faberi Hetrm, SETFA), and Green foxtail(Setaria viridis P. Beauv, SETVI). Degree of dormancy was high in the order of SETGL, SETVI and SETFA. The dormancy of SETGL seed was relatively well removed by room temperature and drying storage, but SETFA and SETVI by low temperature and wetting storage(stratification). For breaking dormancy of SETGL, SETVI and SETFA, it was necessary for being kept under the above storage conditions for at least 2, 4 and 4-5 months, respectively. When the dormancy-breaked seeds were transfered to low temperature($4^{\circ}C$) and drying condition, SETGL showed germination rate of 96% even after 2 month storage. However, SETVI and SETFA showed a decreased germination of 54% and 69%, respectively, with a decreased velocity of germination, indicating that secondary dormancy might be induced. On the other hand, a significant change in germination rate was not observed as the seeds were transfered to room temperature($25^{\circ}C$) and drying condition. The germinability of SETGL seed began to decline from 6th year after storage in room temperature and drying condition. All of 3 species showed relatively high germination rate at alternating temperature of $30^{\circ}C$/$20^{\circ}C$(14hr/10hr) and their germination were not increased by light. All of 3 species exhibited similar responses to cycloxydim, sethoxydim and primisulfuron in greenhouse experiment. In contrast, SETVI and SETFA were relatively susceptible to fenoxapropethyl, SETFA to fluazifop-butyl, SETGL and SETFA to clorimuron-ethyl, and SETGL to EK-2612. The difference in herbicidal response among 3 species was the highest in the treatment of EK-2612. These results suggest that there is no a consistent tendency in responses of 3 species to herbicides which have the same target site. And the relationship between germination characteristics and differential responses to herbicides was not found.
A total of 480 live buffaloes and 180 visceral samples from Dhaka, Mymensingh, Bogura and Rajshahi were examined for the presence of parasites of water buffaloes in Bangladesh during September, 1988 to August, 1989. The recorded parasites were eight trematodes, two cestodes, fourteen nematodes, two protozoa and two arthropods. The trematodes were Fasciola gigantica (18.9%-46.4%). Paramphistomes (Gigantocotyl explanatum, Ceylonocotyl scoliocoelium, Cotylophoron cotylophorum and Gastrothylax crumenifer (29.5%-48.3%). Schistosoma indicum (1.6%-31.6%), S. spindale (13.9%-27.7%) and S. nasalis (4.6%-8.3%). The cestodes were Hydatid cyst (24.4%), Cysticercus tenuicollis (11.1%). The nematodes were Strongyloides papillosus (14.8%-21.6%), Capillaria spp. (C. bilobata, C. bovis) (8.5%-20.0%), Setaria digitata (7.2%), Onchocerca armillata (27.2%), Thelazia rhodesii (2.3%), Gongylonema pulchrum (3.9%), Oesophagostomum radiatum (6.6%-41.6%), Hookworms (Agriostomum vryburgi, Bunostomum phlebotomum) (8.1%-17.2%), Trichostrongylus axei (11.2%-21.6%), Mecistocirrus digitatus & Haemonchus contortus (15.2%-25.5%) and Toxocara vitulorum (1.1%-9.8%). The protozoa were Eimeria zuerni (2.3%) and Trypanosoma theileri (0.4%). The arthropods were Haemaphysalis bispinosa (8.1%) and Haematopinus tuberculatus (34.6%).
This study was conducted to identify the possibility of paddy weeds served as the host plant of bacterial leaf blight, using various bacterial groups and inoculation methods. The results obtained can be summarized as follows. 1. Alopecurns spp., Setaria viridis P. Beauv., and Leersia juponica Makino were identified the most susceptible to bacterial leaf blight, similar to Milyang 23 which was used as a susceptible check variety. The others such as Digitaria adscendens Hem., Eleusine indic aGaertin., Cyperns serotinus Rottb, Cyperns difformis L. showed slight infection but most of broadleaf weeds were resistant to bacterial leaf blight. 2. Weed species showing early susceptibility maintained their susceptibility throughout the growth stages. Group I of bacterial leaf blight was the most effective to develop infection symptom to weeds. 3. Pin and scissor inoculation methods were more effective mean for infection than spray method which was used without wound.
