Many products today tend to adopt a convergence approach by adding new features or functionalities to the existing products. The convergence, however, results in both positive and negative effects on usage of products, and thus demonstrates the characteristics called "paradox of technology." On the one hand, the added functionalities or features will increase the usefulness of the products. On the other hand, the convergence increases complexity of learning and usage of products and may decrease satisfaction or user evaluations. This study provides an empirical evidence of this paradox through investigation of telematics, one of the exemplary products of convergence services. Our research model is designed to test the existence of the "paradox of technology" and includes variables such as variety of functions, complexity of usage, perceived usefulness, service evaluation, and service fit. The proposed research model and subsequent hypotheses are empirically tested using 149 survey responses from telematics users. We have found that the variety of functions is positively associated with perceived usefulness, but is negatively associated with the complexity of usage. The data analysis reveals that the perceived usefulness has more significant impacts on service evaluation than the complexity of usage does. Furthermore, the strength of causal relationships among these variables is partially moderated by the degree of service fit. This study thus highlights the paradox of technology in explaining user attitudes and beliefs associated with convergence services.

Recently, as personal information utilization devices such as IoT, artificial intelligence, and wearable devices that focus on the individual have spread, privacy violations are also increasing. However, the privacy paradox of providing personal information to enjoy services while worrying is getting stronger. However, there are still preliminary studies on this. In this study, an intelligent home camera based on IoT technology was selected as a research object, and whether privacy paradox exists in the IoT environment, including smart home camera, was studied. To this end, the effect of perceived usefulness, a benefit factor of smart home camera use, and privacy concern, a risk factor, on intention to use was verified. In addition, it was investigated whether the relationship between privacy concerns and intention to use differs according to the presence or absence of use experience. In order to verify the research model, a survey was conducted with people with and without experience in using smart home cameras, and a total of 298 data samples were used for statistical analysis. As a result of the analysis, it was found that both perceived usefulness and privacy concerns had a positive effect on the intention to use, proving that privacy paradox exists in the IoT-based smart home camera environment. In addition, by analyzing the fact that privacy concerns have different effects on usage intentions depending on the user experience, it was verified that those with experience have a strong privacy paradox and those without experience have a weak privacy paradox. This study is meaningful because it seeks strategic implications to improve service and business performance by understanding the relationship between privacy attitudes and behaviors of IoT service providers, including smart home cameras.
This study investigated the effect of service provider's recovery effort and pre-failure customer-employee rapport on post-recovery consumer response such as satisfaction, purchase intention, and positive Word-of-Mouth communication. First, this study explored the interaction effect of recovery effort and customer-employee rapport on post-recovery consumer response. The result shows when the level of pre-failure customer-employee rapport is high, customer's positive responses decreased slightly even though they perceived low recovery effort. However, when the level of pre-failure customer-employee rapport is low, customer's responses were decreased considerably in case of low recovery effort. Second, this study examined 'service recovery paradox' which is post-recovery consumer's satisfaction is greater than the case of no service failure. The result shows recovery paradox was not supported in all samples regardless of the level of recovery effort and customer-employee rapport. Synthetically, customer-employee rapport took a buffering role in customer response after service failure although it's not the same as error-free state.

This study is to estimate the learning curve based on the consequences of reduced voice of customer from each telecommunication service products. We used Exponential Decay Model, which is the most popular among the learning curve models. We attempted to add how VOC changes in accordance with seasonal factors, human resource input, application of software, and the investment. The results of the empirical analysis of each service product as follows: First, as learning curve, customer complaints decreased. Second, human resource input, Network fault make increase or decrease customer complaints(VOC). Third, even though increasing the customer's quality of experience, VOC would not decrease due to service paradox.
With regard to the diffusion of mobile Internet service and generational differences for Internet use, this study aims to explore the relationship between the Internet activities and privacy concern based on the media dependency theory. Using the Korea Media Panel data produced by KISDI in 2018, this study analysed 8,988 nation-wide samples to test the difference of Internet use in personal privacy concern among generations. The results of the study showed that there was statistically significant difference for privacy concern among generations. This study has an implication to reveal the phenomenon of 'privacy paradox' by showing that SNS use negatively influenced users' privacy concern.

The economic value of personal information has its importance as an objective measure of valuation in commercial, legal, and policy areas. Until recently, however, personal information subjects have not properly recognized the economic value of personal information, which has led to the inability to exercise the right to self-determination of personal information by unconsciously agreeing to the terms and conditions of personal information service without recognizing the value of personal information provided to the service provider when subscribing to a specific service. Therefore, we will examine the methodologies for calculating the economic value of personal information and the practical guarantee of the right to self-determination of personal information and analyze the economic value of personal information through a survey. Also, we would like to propose various ways for the subject of personal information with limited cognitive resources to visually accept the economic value of personal information required by the terms and conditions and suggest the optimal visualization of personal information economic value to exercise the right to self-determination of personal information. To do so, in this paper, we have conducted two survey experiments to estimate the economic value of personal information. Based on the price of personal information by category retrieved from surveys, we have visualized the price of personal information in various forms and asked respondents to choose the optimal infographic that best represents the value of personal information visually. As a result, we have proposed an optimal usage of the infographic to 'nudge' information subjects about their right to self-determination of personal information, therefore opening the possibility of diminishing privacy paradox.
As service industry became more important, many of studies have been done on the role of service. Such studies has been researched focusing on the relationship between the service intensity in the economy and a country's productivity. Baumal(1967) suggested that service growth in economy would bring about decrease in productivity. However, the economy of developed countries encounter with the productivity growth as their economy grows, which phenomenon called Baumol's paradox. Oulton (1999, 2001) find out the reason of Baumol's paradox in a forward and backward chain effects. So, this paper is aimed at verifying the theory of Oulton (1999, 2001) for 13 OECD countries using panel data analysis. We find out that the intermediate knowledge-intensive service inputs cause a multifactor productivity growth.
Because services are delivered through the behaviors of people, it is very difficult to do the quality control and services failures are often happened. If services failures are not recovered by appropriate methods, customers make the negative word-of-mouth communications and have the negative intention to repurchase. The service recovery paradox demonstrates the importance of service recovery after the service failures. The purpose of this study is to investigate the antecedents of customer satisfaction of service recovery(CS), and its consequences of the CS. Independent variables of CS are distributive justice, procedural justice, and interactional justice, and dependent variables of CS are negative word of mouth communication and intention to repurchase. Data are collected using the scenario method. Research model and hypotheses are tested empirically using the statistical packages such as SPSS and AMOS.
This paper primarily intends to explore whether smartphones accelerate the customer education paradox. Smartphone usage is becoming a mainstream habit, and it is changing people's shopping experience and conventional practices, hence presenting new challenges to the market. A smartphone affects customers strongly when they are trying to choose a product/service among a variety of options, and making purchase decisions. With smartphones bringing such changes and challenges to the market, especially to the companies and stores, it is important to understand market trends in order to retain the loyalty of existing customers as well as to attract new buyers. Therefore, companies and stores should offer enhanced and better technical service quality, along with the use of tools such as QR codes. Further, mobile based websites would offer a suitable approach in assisting customers using smartphones to obtain better information of greater value. The results of this study imply that there is an opportunity for organizations to design various methods of imparting customer education by using smartphones, such as loading applications on a smartphone that lead to more information with good quality and present real benefits regarding the products/services.
With the development of information technology, social network services (SNS) such as Facebook and Twitter became popular and many users disclose their personal and sensitive information like private story, photographs and location information through posting and sharing. Despite the privacy concerns in SNSs, individuals continue to disclose their identity online. This phenomenon is called 'privacy paradox'. The purpose of this study is to examine the role of collective efficacy on self-disclosure in SNS context and to explain privacy paradox phenomenon. Drawing upon the communication privacy management theory, research model was developed and empirically tested with cross-sectional data from 306 individuals. Results revealed that collective efficacy has a direct positive effect on self-disclosure while privacy risk is negatively related to self-disclosure. However, privacy concern is not directly related to self-disclosure. The relationship between privacy concern and self-disclosure was moderated by collective efficacy.
