  • Six serpentine mines are found in South Korea. We investigated occurrence, characteristics and origin of constituent minerals of Bibong serpentine mine in Chungcheongnam-do. We also analyzed the properties of serpentine minerals using XRD, XRF, SEM/EDS, FT-IR, EPMA and polarized microscope. The serpentinite of Bibong mine occurs as intruded body within the Precambrian metasedimentary rocks. Various minerals such as serpentine, forsterite, pyroxene, tremolite, magnetite, chlorite, mica, talc and dolomite are occurre. Five distinctive mineral assemblage types are observed in the serpentinite: (A) serpentine-forsterite, (B) serpentine, (C) serpentine-chlorite (vermiculite), (D) serpentine-tremolite, (E) tremolite-chlorite. Lizardite and antigorite are mainly occurred as serpentine minerals and chrysotile is partly included. From the study of mineral compositions and occurrence of serpentinite body, serpentine formed by hydrothermal alteration of ultramafic rock consisting mainly of forsterite, and altered minerals such as chlorite and tremolite subsequently formed by secondary hydrothermal alteration.

  • The precious serpentine, referring to a rare and highly valuable gem variety of serpentine group minerals, is found to occur in serpentinite from Booyo Gren Jade Mine which is located in Oesan-myun, Booyo-gun of Chungchungnam-do. Geommological properties of the precious serpentine have been investigated by use of polarizing microscope, specific gravity balance, refractometer, hardness pencils, X-ray diffractometer, XRF, ICP-MS analyser, and infrared absorption spectroscope. The precious serpentine from Booyo is colored deep green with oily luster and semi-transparent. It is highly tough and Mohs's scale of hardness is measured to be 5-6. Specific gravity is determined to be 2.67, and a single refractive index ND=1.56 is observed by a spot method, using sodium light source. X-ray powder diffraction data is represented by the reflection lines at 7.40(100), 4.64(25), 3.68(68), 2.757(69), 2.530(49), 2.549(32), and 1.710(21${\AA}$), which compares very well with that of antigorite of serpentine group minerals. The major chemical compositions of the precious serpentine group minerals. The major chemical compositions of the precious serpentine are SiO2 42.49%, MgO 39.08%, Fe2O3 3.85%, and H2O 11.87%. Besides, trace elements such as Cr(2188), Ni(1110ppm), Co(58ppm), and Ta (108ppm) are relatively spectrum shows peaks at 3670, 1190, 1070, 980 and 610cm-1. Strong absorption at 3670cm-1 is due to OH stretching, and 1190, 1070 and 980cm-1 due to SiO stretching. The absorption 610cm-1 is formed by alteration of pre-existing ultramafic rock, namely peridotite, with an introduction of fluid with very little content of CO2, under 400$^{\circ}C$ environment. Magnetite inclusions, finely disseminated in the precious serpentine, may be a result of Fe precipitation, during serpentinization of olivine-bearing country rock.

  • Mechanical, physical and petrographic properties of seventeen marble specimens collected from ten marble mines in Korea were investigated. Studied marbles were mainly composed of calcite, dolomite, and various amounts of serpentine, tremolite, olivine, quartz and opaque minerals. Complete and sutured textures were dominant. Compressive strength measured normal to the bedding plane is larger almost two times than that measured parallel to the bedding plane. From the results of Shore hardness test on marbles, water content was an important factor to decrease Shore hardness values. Engineering geological properties, especially, compressive strength, Young's modulus, wear resistance and water absorption could be controlled by the presence of quartz, and the type of marble texture. Water absorption-porosity, compressive strength-Young's modulus, and impact strength index-Los Angeles abrasion couples show good correlation. According to the comparative utility as commercial stone, it could be concluded that marbles from the Banglim mine, Songbo mine, Kwangdeok mine and Bongjeong mine were superior to that of other studied marbles.

  • Asbestos minerals are found at rocks and soils of the Hongseong and Bibong serpentine mines, western part of Chungnam. The area consists of and metasediment, and Mesozoic igneous intrusives with minor age-known gneiss complexes and Mesozoic sediments. With detailed geological investigations, rock samples for the serpentinite and amphibolite areas are collected at sites containing asbestos. Representative asbestos and rock samples are analysed by PLM, XRD, SEM and EPMA. Serpentinites are found as steeply dipping faults with adjacent gneiss complex to the NNE direction. Repeated alteration, including serpenitization and talcification, is found at the emplacement direction for the serpentinite body. Amphibollites occur as intrusives and stratiforms within the Precambrian gneiss complex. Serpentinite and amphibolite (or amphibole schist) contain amphiboles either as asbestiform or non-asbestiform. Varying amounts of asbestos minerals, including chrysotile, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos, are found within the serpentinites. The asbestos minerals are found near the cracks or fractures and along the bedding plane. They occur as cross fiber, slip fiber and mass fiber types. Varying amounts of amphibole asbestos minerals, such as tremolite and actinolite asbestos, are found within amphibolites and as a mass fiber type. Overall results suggest that rocks of the serpentine mines contain serpentine and amphibole type asbestos minerals originated from the hydrothermal alteration. Considering construction nearby the mines and environmental risks by the asbestos, additional land management plans are required.

  • Serpentinite rocks which are composed mainly of olivine, serpentine and clinopyroxene, cropped out in the anorogenic Kyongsang sedimentary basin of South Korea. The serpentinites contain high content of MgO (36.87~41.99%) and 47~67 ppm Co, 1185~2042 ppm Ni and 979~3582 ppm Cr, which are quite similar to those of ultrabasic rocks such as peridotite and dunite. Isotopic compositions of serpentinites range from -95.5 to -105.7‰ in ${\delta}D$ and +1.7 to 7.1‰ in ${\delta}^{18}O$ corresponding to the continental antigorite type. A wide variation of oxygen isotopic values and $H_2O^+$ content of serpentinites reflect the different water/rock ratios during serpentinization processes. Formation temperature of serpentine minerals are estimated to be unusually high temperature of $488{\sim}646^{\circ}C$ by serpentine-magnetite isotopic fractionation, which belong to continental antigorite type. Calculated ${\delta}^{18}O$ value of serpentinized fluid during serpentinization is suggested that the hydrothermal fluid responsible for serpentinization be originated from the magmatic fluid with a minor influx of paleo-meteoric water in this area.

  • The first Mg-skarn minerals are found from magnetite ore deposits of the Janggun mine, Korea. The skarn minerals are composed of mostly chondrodite, olivine, chlorite, serpentine, phlogophite, talc, apatite, magnesite, dolomite, siderite and trace amount of clinopyroxene, amphibole, garnet, wollastonite associated with magnetite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. The skarn zone is developed in the magnetite deposits at the contact of the Mg-rich Janggun Limestone Formation and the Chunyang granite. The chondrodites are columnar and radial shapes and some of them show twins. The chemical compositions of twinning-type chondrodites have high FeO (4.63 to 5.6 wt%), MnO (0.26 to 0.46 wt%) and low MgO (55.02 to 56.18 wt%) relative to the radial-type chondrodites. Twinning in chondrodite has been formed in close relation to substitution between Mg and Fe + Mn in humite solid solution. Temperature, $-logfo_2$ and $X_{CO2}$ during the skarn stage of magnetite deposits from the Janggun mine range from 395 to $430^{\circ}C$, from 30.5 to 31.2 atm and from 0.06 to 0.09, respectively.
