  • Recently, there has been the gradual growth of the public in rural amenities, hobby farming works, much more urbanities, and especially near-retires. However, in spite of popular preference to ruralities, little has been known about their demand on retired rural life. Therefore, this study examined urbanites' attitude to preparatory works for out-migration, preferred residential site condition and life styles in the countryside. For the purpose, data were collected from the survey with the sample of 62 urban trainees who were studying farming technology in department of training on agricultural technology of Korea National Agricultural College, RDA. We carried out the experience farming to candidate with using the abandoned sericultural facilities which are the silkworm rearing house and mulberry fields. The 71% of urban trainees, who answered in this survey, hoped to move into countryside after retirement and to make a monthly income of $1,000 from agriculture. The age distribution of sericulural farmers is about 79% more than that of 60 years old. In the experience farming works. The two candidates made 1,977$ with net income through 32 days worked in spring season. In autumn season, the couple candidates made 1,317$ with net income through 23 days worked. Knowledge of these results will be important to policy-makers and to understand the role that retirement in-migration play in stimulating economic growth of rural agricultural farmers.

  • Earlier breeding experiments undertaken at Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute, Mysore, India since a decade had resulted in the development of many productive and qualitatively superior bivoltine hybrids. However, the hot climatic conditions of tropics prevailing particularly in summer are not conducive to rear these high yielding bivoltine hybrids. This has necessitated breeding of compatible bivoltine hybrids for year-round rearing. Accordingly, the Japanese hybrid, B2Ol ${\times}$ BCS12 which was found to be tolerant to high temperature was used as breeding resource material. Following hybridization and selection rearing of silkworms was taken up in SERICATRON (Environmental chamber with precise and automatic control facilities for uniform maintenance of temperature and humidity) at high temperature of $36{\times}1^{\circ}C$ and 85${\times}$5% RH in fifth instar and the control batches at $25{\times}1^{\circ}C$ and 65{\times}$5% RH. Directional selection was resorted to the batches reared at 36$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ till F$_{5}$ keeping pupation rate as important selection criteria. From $F_{2}% onwards the experiment was modified in such a way as to conduct normal rearing every alternate generation to regain the lost vitality due to continuous exposure to high temperature and high humidity stress. At $F_{2}$ , Oval and dumb-bell cocoons were separated out and designated as CSR18 and CSR19, respectively. By utilizing these lines at $F_{12}$, the hybrid CSR18$\times$CSR19 was prepared and studied for the thermotolerance by subjecting to stress condition at high temperature of 36$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ and 85$\pm$5% RH in fifth instar and the control batches at $25{\times}1^{\circ}C$ and 65${\times}$5% RH. The better performance of CSR18${\times}$CSR19 (survival > 88%) at $36{\times}1^{\circ}C$ clearly indicates the general superiority of CSR18${\times}$CSR19 with regard to high temperature tolerance over the productive hybrids and CSR18$\times$CSR19 can perform well in varied agro-climatic conditions of the tropics with optimum qualitative and quantitative characteristics.s.

  • Present experiment designed for the review of theoretical basis for the inspection system of infected insects by Nosema bombycis. A microporidian N. bombycis, known as the high virulence, produced at the average of 7$\times$108 spores per female moth of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, enabled transovarial tranmission. Detectability of N. bombycis spores in the mass inspection was varied by dillution level, the higher limit of dillution with healthy moths was 1:140 for 100% detection, 1:160 for 99.5%, 1:200 for 99.0%. For an efficient inspection under the microscopic observation (600$\times$), the lower limit of spore concentration was determined as 1, 000, 000 spores/ml, 60-80 moths could be applicable for a maximum sample unit of a lot. Following the present inspection unit conditioned 35 to 40 moths for a lot. N. bombycis spores were easily detectable from the preparation of crude homogenate with 2% KOH, even the step of contrifuge was omitted. The results suggested a new basis of rational mass inspection system of silkworm female moths to save the facilities, labor, and time.

  • The development of cDNA microarray has permitted the analysis of thousands of genes simultaneously. cDNA microarray has been used to analyze gene expression profiles during developmental stage in both single and multicellular organisms. Two significant factors contributing to the limitation of the development of cDNA microarray in the Bombyx mori are the shortage of accessible repositories of cDNA clones and ESTs and the relative scarcity of facilities to produce microarrays and analyze the data generated. • Silkworms are very sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, and unless it is a suitable temperature and humidity to grow, the productivity and quality of silkworms are greatly reduced. Therefore, it is very important to manage temperature and humidity for silkworm feeding facilities. In particular, it is essential to install heating facilities in Asian countries with distinct seasonal changes. During the feeding period, many farms manage the temperature and humidity of feeding facilities by installing and using electric heaters inside the facilities. However, it is very difficult to manage the room temperature stably by the heaters. In addition, unlike the temperature inside the facility, silkworms could undergo severe temperature changes as the inside of the rearing tray could not be warm enough. In this study, in order to improve the previous heating method, the new rearing method that directly heats the bottom of the rearing tray was developed. Compared to the previous room-heating system, the novel heater-installed tray (HIT) system significantly reduced the change in temperature during the experimental period. In addition, the number of days of silkworm growth up to harvest was shortened, which was effective in growth performance, and it was also found that silkworms grew more uniformly in HIT system than in previous system. Moreover, as the heater tubes were installed directly under the rearing tray, it quickly dried mulberry leaves and silkworm feces after feeding, and as a result, the environment in the tray was greatly improved with decrease the labor of breeder. In conclusion, these results suggest that the heater-installed rearing tray method greatly improves silkworm quality, increases weight of silkworms, and final profits compared to the previous room heating system with electric heaters.

  • Mulberry fruit is common to keep a frozen storage because of the very high water content. Because freezing-storing cost is generated before the processing or sales, farmers of mulberry fruit production are weighted in financial burden. In addition, mulberry fruit has difficulty in expanding consumption by made in the simple processed products like the mulberry jam, mulberry juice, mulberry enzyme, alcohol, etc. Recent, frozen fruits including frozen blueberries, frozen strawberries, frozen mango, frozen rich, frozen mulberry fruit has been started to sell in the large discount stores and convenience stores. However, there is restricted sales in only special place that have the frozen distribution facilities. So, for the income improvement and consumption promotion of mulberry farmers facing these difficult situations, we developed the processing method of semi-dried mulberry fruit using the vacuum freezing dryer. The frozen mulberry fruit which was stored below $-40^{\circ}C$ is to dry in a vacuum freeze dryer, at $30{\sim}35^{\circ}C$, 23 ~ 24 hours. Semi-dried mulberry fruit seperated respectively. It had soft texture, and maintained shape, size and flavor. In particular, semi-dried mulberry fruit can be stored at room temperature.

  • In this study, we investigated the developmental characteristics and genetic diversity of seven populations of two-spotted crickets (Gryllus bimaculatus De Geer, 1773 (Orthoptera: Gryllidae)) raised in South Korea. Regarding the developmental characteristics of the species, we observed no statistically significant difference in the weight of the nymphs in the six populations we tested. After molting, although weight differences were observed between the populations in each stage of the developmental period, the average weight for each developmental stage was constant. We also analyzed mitochondrial COI gene sequences (DNA barcoding region) of the reared crickets collected from five insect farms and two national insect rearing facilities and the resultant sequences were analyzed together with the 12 sequences from foreign countries specimens obtained from public data. We detected six haplotypes from 111 specimens, indicating a low intraspecific genetic distance (~1.8%). The most dominant haplotype was overwhelmingly haplotype 1, which was found in all South Korean specimens and four specimens from China, Indonesia, and Germany. These findings indicate that the low genetic diversity of South Korean specimens can be explained by the fact that the G. bimaculatus population imported for feed from Japan in the early 2000s became a maternal group that spread throughout cricket farms in South Korea. In order to breed healthy cricket strains, it is necessary to increase genetic diversity by importing them from other countries through appropriate quarantine procedures.

  • The Studies were conducted to provide the state of mulberry cultivation and it's development in Banguet province (high land) of Philippines. Philippines initiated the sericulture industry with the technical asistance of Japan in 1974 and established mulberry field and sericultural facilities with technical asistance of Korea in 1990 and 1995. The required average of 100 to 150mm per month is not available during the dry season from December to March. Therefore mulching with grass which is available abundantly in the Philippines should be established to conserve moisture, to control soil erosion, surface ran-off and also to increase the humus content in the soil. In chemical properties of mulberry field, the pH value of soil is 4.7, organic matter 1.6%, and available phosphorus 6ppm. Therefore, all fields should do liming and be applied compost. To improve leaf yield for mulberry planted under partial shade area of pine trees, more pruning of pine tree should be done for good sunshining of mulberry, more liming and compost should be applied to improve acidic soil. To control the leaf roller, DDVP and KAFIL are able to be used. When spraying insecticides to control mulberry insect pests, care should be taken to consider the residual effects of chemicals on the leaf. Leaf should be fed to silkworms only after the leaves are free of any residual effects.
