  • Contents of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in the sediments of Ulsan Bay were investigated by the sequential extraction methods that classifies heavy metals into five types of chemical forms: exchangeable, bound to carbonates, bound to Fe-Mn oxides, bound to organic matter and residual. The analyses were determined by using an ICP-MS. Total Cr concentrations in the sediments were in the range of 41.6-96.4, Cu 60.7-680, Zn 189-1954, Cd 33.1-83.4, and Pb 138-567 mg/kg. Results of sequential fractionation indicates that relatively high proportion ( ~44%) of Cu is associated with organic matter. A large proportion of Pb is associated with three types of chemical forms: Fe-Mn oxides, organic matter, and residual. There were significant correlation in concentrations between the exchangeable components and total organic carbons. The heavy metals In the residual phase cannot be easily released to the environment since these are bound to the crystal lattice. But, reducible and organic Phases con a significant amount of most heavy metals. Therefore, there is Potential dancer of a substantial amount of metals becoming chemically mobile with environmental changes.

  • This experimental study proposes a multi-document summarization method that produces optimal summaries in which users can find answers to their queries. In order to identify the most effective method for this purpose, the performance of the three summarization methods were compared. The investigated methods are sentence clustering, passage extraction through spreading activation, and clustering-passage extraction hybrid methods. The effectiveness of each summarizing method was evaluated by two criteria used to measure the accuracy and the redundancy of a summary. The passage extraction method using the sequential bnb search algorithm proved to be most effective in summarizing multiple documents with regard to summarization precision. This study proposes the passage extraction method as the optimal multi-document summarization method.

  • The purpose of this study is to illustrate the characteristics of soil organic matter (SOM) and partition coefficient $(K_{DOC})$. Humic substances (HS) from eight soils of varying properties were extracted by two different methods. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration was stabilized in 22hrs. The ratio of UV absorbance at 465nm and 665nm (E4/E6 ratio) for HS were similar pattern for 8 soils. The extraction with increasing pH increased dissolution of SON. The ratio of organic carbon (OC) associated with HA and FA (the HA:FA ratio) was varied widely in accordance with the soils and was highly correlated to OC $content(\%)$ of the soils. in modeling metal speciation in soils and soil solutions, assumptions that all DOC in soil solution is associated with FA and that HA:FA ratio in SOM is constant have been made. The results of this study indicate that the validity of these assumptions is questionable. By sequential pH extraction, the $K_{DOC}$ showed in a linear correlation with pH.

  • In this study , we have investigated leaching characteristics of heavy metals and alkalinity centering around steel mill slags by several extraction methods, for the purpose of risk assessment that exert influence on environment and offer of the foundation data of reuse by slags. Korean standard method, U.S.EPA Extraction Procedure, alkalinity extraction test and 9 step sequential fractionation experiment by Miller et al. were carried out for investigating teachability of steel mill slags. As a result of this experiment, heavy metals were little detected and it was considered that alkalinity does not exert a bad effect around environment in slabs with large particle size. By the result of 9 step fractionation experiment, heavy metal contents in slags were not plentiful, in addition, even comparatively plentiful contended heavy metals, for the most part, were likely to detained or bonded in silica matrix. Therefore, in case of slags with large particle size, it seems that teachability of heavy metals were next to impossible that is existed as a safety condition.

  • In pattern recognition and machine learning society, classification has been a classical problem and the most widely researched area. Adaptive boosting also known as Adaboost has been successfully applied to binary classification problems. It is a kind of boosting algorithm capable of constructing a strong classifier through a weighted combination of weak classifiers. On the other hand, the PCA and LDA algorithms are the most popular linear feature extraction methods used mainly for dimensionality reduction. In this paper, the combination of Adaboost and feature extraction methods is proposed for efficient classification of two class data. Conventionally, in classification problems, the roles of feature extraction and classification have been distinct, i.e., a feature extraction method and a classifier are applied sequentially to classify input variable into several categories. In this paper, these two steps are combined into one resulting in a good classification performance. More specifically, each projection vector is treated as a weak classifier in Adaboost algorithm to constitute a strong classifier for binary classification problems. The proposed algorithm is applied to UCI dataset and FRGC dataset and showed better recognition rates than sequential application of feature extraction and classification methods.

  • Purpose: Alveolar bone develops with tooth eruption and is absorbed following tooth extraction. Various ridge preservation techniques have sought to prevent ridge atrophy, with no superior technique evident. Collagen has a long history as a biocompatible material. Its usefulness and safety have been amply verified. The related compound, atelocollagen, is also safe and displays reduced antigenicity since telopeptides are not present. Materials and Methods: The current study evaluated whether the $Rapiderm^{(R)}$ atelocollagen plug (Dalim Tissen, Seoul, Korea) improves tissue healing of extraction sockets and assessed the sequential pattern of bone regeneration using histology and microcomputed tomography in six beagle dogs. To assess the change of extraction socket, hard tissues were examined 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after tooth extraction. Result: The experimental groups showed better bone fill with slow remodeling process compared to the control groups although there was no statistical difference between groups. Conclusion: The atelocollagen seems to have a tendency to slow bone remodeling in the early phase of healing period and maintain remodeling capacity until late phase of remodeling. Also, use of atelocollagen increased the bone-to-tissue ratio compared to healing of untreated extraction socket.

  • BACKGROUND: Mining activities, smelter discharges, and sludges are the major sources of heavy metal contamination to soils. The objective of this study was to determine the efficiency of magnetite and bottom ash derived from coal ash in remediating As-contaminated soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: An incubation experiment was conducted for 10 weeks. Magnetite and bottom ash at different rates and ratios were applied to each plastic bottle repacked with 1,000 g of dried As-contaminated soil. After 3-weeks of incubation, the concentrations of available As were measured by using Mehlich-3, SBET, and sequential extraction methods. All of the subjected soil amendments resulted in significant decreases in available As concentration compared to the controls. The addition of magnetite at the highest rate was the best to stabilize As in the soils; however, the values of As concentration varied with the extraction methods. CONCLUSION(S): To ensure the stabilization accuracy of heavy metals in soil, both single and sequential extractions are recommended. The magnetite derived from fly coal ash can also be applicable as a heavy metal stabilizer for the As-contaminated soil.

  • This study examines the design and utilization of video storyboard surrogates in the digital video libraries. To do this, first we constructed the arrangement model of key-frames for storyboard based on the FRBR model, image communication and PRECIS Indexing theories and evaluated the model using 6 sample videos and 26 participants. The study results show that the video storyboard surrogates based on the arrangement model has a higher accuracy value in terms of summary extraction than that of the sequential video storyboard. Moreover, watching both types of video storyboard one after another, especially browsing the sequential video storyboard first and then the arrangement model-based one, produces a remarkable increase in accuracy value of summary extraction. The study proposes two methods of utilizing the video storyboard surrogates in the digital video libraries: Designing a video browsing interface where users can use the sequential storyboard as a default and then the arrangement model-based one for re-watching; and utilizing the arrangement model-based storyboard as structured match sources of image-based queries.

  • Since most program execution time is spent in the loop structure, extracting parallelism from sequential loop programs hale been focused. But, most programs hare implicit parallelism of interprocedure. This paper presents a generalized Parallelism extraction in loop\ulcorner with procedure calls. Most parallelization of loops with Procedure calls just focus on the uniform code which data dependency distance is constant. We presents algorithms which can be applied with uniform code, nonuniform code, and complex code. The proposed algorithm, loop extraction, loop embedding and procedure cloning transformation methods evaluate using CRAY-T3E. The result of performance evaluation is that proposed algorithm is an effect.
