The material-based homogenization design method generates arbitrary topologies of initial structural design as well as reinforcement structural design by controlling the amount of material available. However, if a small volume constraint is specified in the design of Lightweight structures, thin and slender structures are usually obtained. For these structures stability becomes one of the most important requirements. Thus, to prevent overall buckling (that is, to increase stability), the objective of the design is to maximize the buckling load of a structure. In this paper, the buckling analysis is restricted to the linear buckling behavior of a structure. The global stability requirement is defined as a stiffness constraint, and determined by solving the eigenvalue problem. The optimality conditions to update the design variables are derived based on the sequential convex approximation method and the dual method. Illustrated examples are presented to validate the feasibility of this method in the design of structures.
A bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil in Korea was evaluated for the optimization of enhanced biodegradation and the minimization of effects of seasonal variations, The short-term bioremediation in combination of biopile pretreatment and landfarming was performed by lowering contaminated levels and overcoming the inhibiting factors in the rainy and winter seasons. A microbial density was maintained with indigenous microbial addition for bioaugmentation and with fertilizers for biostimulation. A lesser volatile and biodegradable fraction due to their abiotic removals following the biopile pretreatment was effectively removed by the laterally applied landfarming. The optimal temperature in greenhouse was maintained by buffering of the soil temperature even with slight decreases in removal rates during the winter and extensive leaching of nutrients and contaminants was restricted with adjusting the water contents during the Korean rainy season. Although the tilling process was effective for biodegradation with aeration only, the simultaneous treatment due to apparent mixing of nutrients and microbes more favorably degraded the petroleum than the sequential treatment.
The main obstacle to high track density in HDD id the structural resonances of the suspension. The most critical mode is sway mode and second torsion mode, when a data is read and written. It is common fact that the effect of two modes is smaller when a thickness is bulky. But the stiffness of suspension is smaller, the slider can follow a disk better. Because these two fact are reciprocal, a compromise is needed. So we investigated another method to improve band width without changing of the thickness of suspension but with changing of the shape. A novel system has been developed to produce ${\delta}-aminolevulinic$ acid (ALA) using the intact cells of late logarithmic phase of Rhodocyclus gelatinosus KUP-74. The system was shown optimum yield of extracellular ALA under a condition of anaerobic light irradiation (4 Klux) at $30^{\circ}C$ with no variation in cell mass. The rate of extracellular ALA formation was stimulated by low doses of either $C_4\;or\;C_5$ ALA biosynthetic precursors, where 5 mM ($C_4) and 3 mM ($C_5) of each precursors were appeared to generate the maximum rates of 3.3 and 4.0 nmoles of ALA per 0.35 mg cells per hr, respectively. Half-life of the system was 10 hr in a sense of an ability of portage transport of L-glutamate, and sequential dose of this compound was resulted in promising recovery of the ALA.

In mixture experiments with process variables, we consider the case that some of process variables are either uncontrollable or hard to control, which are called noise variables. Given the such mixture experimental data with process variables, first we study how to search for candidate models. Good candidate models are screened by the sequential variables selection method and checking the residual plots for the validity of the model assumption. Two methods, which use numerical optimization methods proposed by Derringer and Suich (1980) and minimization of the weighted expected loss, are proposed to find a cost-effective robust optimal condition in which the performance of the mean as well as the variance of the response for each of the candidate models is well-behaved under the cost restriction of the mixture. The proposed methods are illustrated with the well known fish patties texture example described by Cornell (2002).
To develop a new fish cage which is required for offshore or moving cage culturing system has been gradually increased against being closely dense of fish cage in shallow water. Though submersible fish cage culturing system is essential technology for converting from shallow water into the offshore, it was pointed out the serious problem about stability of which are sinking and floating state. This study is presented conceptual design of submersible fish cage centered with a mooring steel pile to acquire stability and faculty. Design of mooring steel pile for submersible fish cage culturing system needs to carry out optimal design of mooring steel pile for which much efforts are required. Formulation and optimal design process of submersible fish cage are organized into using Sequential Quadratic Programming method of numerical optimization. For submersible fish cage system centered with a mooring steel pile, process of the optimal design is proposed and the optimal solutions are obtained.
A two-step method is presented for the optimum design of trusses with available sections under stress and Euler buckling constraints. The shape design of the truss is used as a means to convert the discrete solution into a continuous one. In the first step of the method, a continuous solution is obtained by sizing and shape design using an approximate polynomial expression for the buckling coefficients. In the second step, the member sizes obtained are changed to the nearest available sections and the truss is reconfigured by using the exact values for the buckling coefficients. The optimizer used is based on the sequential quadratic programming and the gradients are evaluated in closed form. The method is illustrated by two numerical examples.
According to NERC definition, Available Transfer Capability (ATC) is a measure of the transfer capability remaining in the physical transmission network for the future commercial activity. To calculate Available Transfer Capability, accurate and defensible Total Transfer Capability, Capacity Benefit Margin and Transmission Reliability Margin should be calculated in advance. This paper proposes a method to quantify time varying Available Transfer Capability based on probabilistic approach. The uncertainties of power system and market are considered as complex random variables. Total Transfer Capability is determined by optimization technique such as SQP(Sequential Quadratic Programming). Transmission Reliability Margin with the desired probabilistic margin is calculated based on Probabilistic Load Flow analysis, and Capacity Benefit Margin is evaluated using LOLE of the system. Suggested Available Transfer Capability quantification method is verified using IEEE RTS with 72 bus. The proposed method shows efficiency and flexibility for the quantification of Available Transfer Capability.
This paper is concerned with an optimum design study of containerships in preliminary stage by applying economic criteria. The Net Present Value Index (NPVI) and the Required Freight Rate(RFR) are used as measures of merit. Hooke & Jeeves direct search method and External Penalty Function method of Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Techniques(SUMT) are used for solving constrained nonlinear optimization problem. Sensitivity analysis is carried out to investigate the effect on the optimum solution due to change of values in some parameters such as crane capacity, load factor, oil price, ship speed and the ratio between loaded FEU and TEU.
Resolving of memory access latency is one of the most important problems in modern embedded system design. Recently, tons of studies are presented to reduce and hide the access latency. Burst/page data transfer modes are representative hardware techniques for achieving such purpose. The burst data transfer capability offers an average access time reduction of more than 65 percent for an eight-word sequential transfer. However, solution of utilizing such burst data transfer to improve memory performance has not been accomplished at commercial level. Therefore, this paper presents a new technique that provides the maximum utilization of burst transfer for memory accesses with local variables in code by reorganizing variables placement.
