In Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR), the removal efficiencies if nutrient materials such as nitrogen and phosphate depend highly on quantity and quality of organic carbon source. Food waste thai contains abundant organic materials has been produced in ship. The applicability if anaerobically fermented if food waste (AFFW) as an external carbon source was examined in the lab-scale SBR process operated at $25^{\circ}C$. With the addition if AFFW increased, average removal efficiencies if $COD_cr$, T-N, T-P changed to $98.5\%,\;95\%,\;93\%$, respectively. Denitrification rate is 0.30g $NO_3-N/g\;VSS{\cdot}day$. In summary, it was suggested tint AFFW sould be used as an economical and effective carbon source for the biological nitrogen and phosphate removal.

Lab scale experiment was carried out to study applicability of BM (Beneficial Microorganisms) to the conventional SBR system for the shipboard sewage treatment. BM has been successfully applied to the wastewater treatment by the SBR process and hence this system maintained a stable effluent quality together with an increased treatment efficiency, meeting the requirements of IMO regulations. The SBR system facilitated by BM would be a suitable process for cruise ships in terms of the malodor control, treatment efficiency and operation conveniences.
This study was carried out for advanced treatment development on shipboard sewage. We employed SBR process using Bacillus sp. to remove Organic compounds, Nitrogen and Phosphorus simultaneously. Based on Res. MEPC.159(55) the system was qualified. From the results it was suggested that SBR system might be suitable process for shipboard sewage treatment in terms of pollutant removal efficiency, maintenance and special environmental conditions of ship. More than 90% of COD and BOD were removed. In addition, aover 50% of T-N and T-P were reduced.
Various analytical methods such as electron microscopy, quinone analysis, and 16S rDNA sequencing studies were used to investigate the microbial communities and to identify the microorganisms responsible for enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) in an anaerobic/aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) fed with acetate. Electron photomicrographs showed that oval-shaped microorganisms of about $0.7\;{\sim}\;1\;{\mu}m$ in diameter dominated the microbial sludge. These microorganisms contained polyphosphate granules and glycogen inclusions, which suggests that they are a kind of phosphorus accumulating organism. Quinone and 16S rRNA sequence analyses showed that the members of Proteobacteria beta subclass were the most abundant species, which were affiliated with the Rhodocyclus-likes group. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the two dominating clones of the beta subclass were most distantly related to Propionivibrio dicarboxylicus DSM 5885 and Rhodocyclus tenuis DSM 109 with about 95% and 96% sequence similarity, respectively. Therefore, it was concluded that the oval-shaped organisms related to the Rhodocyclus-likes group are likely to be responsible for biological phosphorus removal in SBR operation supplied with acetate.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) is one of the most effective organizations in evolving international law for the protection and conservation of the marine environment. The IMO, MARPOL(Marine Pollution) 73/78 contains six Annexes that provide an overarching framework for the objectives of the international marine pollution. Annex IV was regulated by 64 th resolution in 2012 to control sea pollution from sewage. In 2014 large-scale wastewater treatment and nutrient removal device was developed with a grant from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. A combined new process of Sequence Batch Reactor (SBR) and Membrane Bioreactor(MBR) was developed to overcome the pollution caused by shipboard sewage. In the present study, shipboard sewage wastewater was treated by mixing and aeration cycle in the newly developed SBR process. Furthermore, during analysis by NGS technique(Macrogen Co., Ltd.), dominant species of bacteria were found in the aeration tank of the Bench-scale wastewater treatment facility. Bacteroidetes and Gammaproteobacteria accounted for 27.1 % of the aerobicbacteria and 16.8 % of the anaerobicbacteria, respectively. Microorganisms play a vital role in shipboard wastewater treatment. A further detailed study is required to understand the precise role of the microorganisms in the wastewater treatment.
To understand the efficient process of biological nitrogen removal (BNR) system, the structure of bacterial communities in nitrification reactors was analyzed using PCR and terminal restriction fragment length poly morphism (I-RFLP) methods. In this study, we used an advanced treatment system with plotting media, Nutrient Removal Laboratory system, or the rumination type sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system. The terminal restriction fragments of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and other $\beta-proteobacteria$ were observed in all of three BNR systems. The nucleotide sequence analysis of terminal restriction fragments showed that Nitrosomonas and Nitrosolobus were major populations of AOB in SBR system, whereas uncultured $\beta-proteobacteria$ and Cardococcus australiensis were the predominant groups in other two BNR systems. Also the SBR system may be more efficient to enrich AOB. These results indicate that the different structure of bacterial community may be developed depending on the wastewater treatment systems, although the same influent is used.
In the treatment of wastewater or sewage plant sludge with high solid concentration, high rate digestion process in which heating and mixing occur at a time is mainly used, and in the case of wastewater containing solid matter below 1000mg/ℓ the recently developed AF or UASB is developed Recently and commonly utilized. But these processes have weakpoints such as clogging of packing media and need of long period of trial run after microorganism granulation. In this point of view, there are active researches on the ASBR( anaerobic sequence batch reaction ) that is capable of treating of organic matter with reactor that has no packing materials and controlling the inflow time, reaction time sedimentation time and outflow time by time control without loss of microorganisms. The objectives of this study are to evaluate the efficiency of ASBR process according to the reaction time, change of treated water quality and gas output rate in the treatment of wheat plant wastewater.
Recently, an innovative method for wastewater treatment and nutrient removal was developed by combining the sequence batch reactor and membrane bioreactor to overcome pollution caused by shipboard sewage. This system is a modified form of the activated sludge process and involves repeated cycles of mixing and aeration. In the present study, the bacterial diversity and dominant microbial community in this wastewater treatment system were studied using the MACROGEN next generation sequencing technique. A high diversity of bacteria was observed in anaerobic and aerobic bioreactors, with approximately 486 species. Microbial diversity and the presence of beneficial species are crucial for an effective biological shipboard wastewater treatment system. The Arcobacter genus was dominant in the anaerobic tank, which mainly contained Arcobacter lanthieri (8.24%), followed by Acinetobacter jahnsonii (5.81%). However, the dominant bacterial species in the aerobic bioreactor were Terrimonas lutea (7.24%) and Rubrivivax gelatinosus (4.95%).

The overall goal of this study was to characterize and quantify ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in four different full-scale sequence batch reactor (SBR) wastewater treatment plants. Also, this study focused on assessing the occurrence of the alternative ammonia-oxidizing microbes such as anammox (anaerobic ammonia oxidation) bacteria (AMX) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) in these systems. Based on total AOB numbers and the estimated cell density in the mixed liquor samples, AOB constituted 0.3 - 1.8% of the total bacterial population in the four WWTPs. Based on clone library, Nitrosomonas ureae-like AOB were dominant in plant A and B, while plant C and D had Nitrosomonas nitrosa-like AOB as major AOB group. The four different AMX primer sets targeting AMX 16S rRNA gene produced PCR amplicons distantly related to Chlamydia and Planctomycetales group bacteria. However, it was not clear these groups of bacteria perform anammox reaction in the SBR plants. Also, molecular evidence of AOA was found in one of the SBR plants, with a sequence located in the deep branch of the sediment creanarchaeota group.

Lab scale experimental study was carried out for SBR process, to investigate the effects of influent ship sewage organic compound removal and Bacillus sp. state on design parameters. This process was able to remove nitrogen and phosphorus as well as organic matter efficiently. More than 95% of chemical oxygen demand(COD) were removed. In addition, about 97% of total nitrogen (T-N) was reduced. The total phosphorus(T-P) reduction averaged 93%. The performance load of SBR process was shown to be 0.095kg ${\cdot}$ TOC/$m^{3}$${\cdot}$ day. The pH was decreased from 8.1 to 7.0 within 30 min and increased to 7.3 at the end of anoxic stage, and these phenomena were explained. The sluge produced in the SBR process is characterized by low generation rate (about 0.36kg ${\cdot}$ MLSS/kg ${\cdot}$ TOC) and excellent settleability. The number of Bacillus sp. in the SBR was 24.2%, indicating that Bacillus sp. was a predominant species in the reactor.
