  • Objective: Multilocular cystic renal cell carcinoma (MCRCC) is a recently described variety of renal cell carcinoma with characteristic pathologic and clinical features. The purpose of this study was to analyze the imaging findings of MCRCCs. Materials and Methods: Ten adult patients with pathologically proven unilateral MCRCC who underwent renal US and CT were included in this study. The radiologic findings were retrospectively evaluated for cystic content, wall, septum, nodularity, calcification and solid portion by three radiologists who established a consensus. Imaging and postnephrectomy pathologic findings were compared. Results: All patients were adults (six males and four females) and their ages ranged from 33 to 68 years (mean, 46). On US and CT images, all tumors appeared as well-defined multilocular cystic masses composed of serous or complicated fluid. In all patients, unenhanced CT scans revealed hypodense cystic portions, and in four tumors, due to the presence of hemorrhage or gelatinous fluid, some hyperdense areas were also noted. In no tumor was an expansile solid nodule seen in the thin septa, and in only one was there dystrophic calcification in a septum. Small areas of solid portion constituting less than 10% of the entire lesion were found in six of the ten tumors, and these areas were slightly enhanced on enhanced CT scans. In all patients, imaging and pathologic findings correlated closely. Conclusion: On US and CT images, MCRCC appeared as a well-defined multilocular cystic mass with serous, proteinaceous or hemorrhagic fluid, with no expansile solid nodules in the thin septa, and sometimes with small slightly enhanced solid areas. Where radiologic examinations demonstrate a cystic renal mass of this kind in adult males, MCRCC should be included in the differential diagnosis.

  • Pancreatic lymphoepithelial cysts (LECs) are rare pancreatic cysts with squamous epithelial lining surrounded by dense lymphoid tissue. A preoperative diagnosis of LECs is difficult due to imaging diversity and inadequate documentation because of their rarity. We present a case of surgically confirmed pancreatic LEC with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings as heterogeneous signal intensity on T2-weighted images with multiple septa-like structures, slightly hypo-signal intensity on T1-weighted images, and thin-wall enhancement on dynamic contrast images. LECs are benign lesions without any malignant potential. Therefore, the inclusion of LEC in the differential diagnosis of cystic pancreatic lesions may reduce unnecessary surgical procedures.

  • Throughout the studies the followings were obtained and summarized here. 1. Thickenings of plerua were due to the organized fibrin deposition on the pleural surface. 2. Thickenings of plerura were accompanied with increaseness of fibrous connective tissues in the interlobular and alveolar septa. 3. Eosinophilic inclusions seemed to LCL bodies were observed in the cytoplasms of epithelial cells of bronchi, bronchial glands and in the cytoplasms of mononuclear cells. 4. Histo-pathologically, there were some evidences influenced by viruses and the organisms of Psittacosis-Lymphogranuloma Venereum Group.

  • Lipoma is a benign neoplasm composed of mature fat cells and usually circumscribed by a fibrous capsule. The fat cells are arranged in irregular lobules, partitioned by fibrous septa with supportive vascular channels. Lipoma of the oral cavity is uncommon, and has been reported to be infrequent in the literature in the world so far. An oral lipoma mainly occurs in the cheek and tongue. Surgical excision is the only treatment recommended, and prognosis is uniformly excellent. Recently we experienced two cases of lipoma of the oral cavity and removed the tumor completely by surgical excision.

  • Two scleractinian species are newly recorded in Korea: Leptoseris mycetoseroides Wells, 1954 and Phyllangia hayamaensis (Eguchi, 1968). The two genera Leptoseris Milne Edwards and Haime, 1849 and Phyllangia Milne Edwards and Haime, 1848 are also newly recorded in Korea. The specimens were collected from the subtidal zones of Jeju-do Island, Korea by SCUBA diving from 1991 to 2007. Leptoseris mycetoseroides is characterized by its platelike growth form, intratentacular budding, irregularly developed collines, single styliform columella, and even septa and septocostae. Phyllangia hayamaensis is distinguished by its encrusting and plocoid growth form of corallites basally united with common coenosteum, trabecular columella, and irregular septal arrangements and paliform lobes.

  • An 8-month-old male orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) housed in Everland Zoo-logical Gardens died after having 10 day history of depression, anorexia and acute respiratory distress. On necropsy, the lung failed to collapse and showed diffuse red consolidation. Microscopically, the alveoli were filled with large amounts of red blood cells, fibrin and varing number of hemosiderin-laden macrophages. The alveolar septa were thickened due to infiltrated mononuclear cells and congestion and are occasionally necrotic. Escherichia coli was isolated from the lung, spleen and kidney. The result of antibiotic sensitivity test of the isolated organism was also described.

  • Pneumocystis (P.) carinii is an opportunistic fungal pathogen of many animal species and human, which can cause fatal pneumonia in immunocompromised individuals. Three 100-day-old pigs with progressive atrophy, anorexia and respiratory distress were submitted to the Cheju National University for diagnosis. Grossly, the lungs were enlarged with rubbery consistency. Histopathologically, the lungs were characterized by diffuse interstitial pneumonia with thickening of alveolar septa due to infiltration of macrophages and lymphocytes. Alveolar lumens were filled with a foamy eosinophilic proteinaceous material in which numerous punctiform organisms. The organisms were demonstrated as P. carinii by Grocott-methenamine-silver staining and immunohistochemistry in lungs of two pigs. In our best knowledge, this is believed to be the first report of P. carinii pneumonia in pigs in Korea.

  • A small-spored Alternaria was found from black spots of storaged Koerle pear (Pyrus sinkiangensis), one of the economically important fruit in Xinjiang province, China. The morphology is similar to A. limoniasperae but obviously different in secondary conidiophores and conidial septa. A phylogenetic analysis using sequence datasets of ITS, GAPDH, TEF1, RPB2, Alt a1, OPA10-2, and EndoPG genes revealed that it belonged to the Alternaria alternata complex group. Pathogenicity tests illustrated that the fungus was the causal pathogen of black spot on Koerle pear fruit.

  • Capillary hemangiomas are common soft tissue tumors on the skin or mucosa of the head and neck in the early childhood, but very rare in the neuraxis. A 47-year-old man presented with one month history of back pain on the lower thoracic area, radiating pain to both legs, and hypesthesia below 17 dermatome. Thoracic spine MRI showed $1{\times}1.3{\times}1.5\;cm$, well-defined intradural mass at T6-7 disc space level, which showed isointensity to spinal cord on T1, heterogeneous isointensity on T2-weighted images, and homogeneous strong enhancement. The patient underwent T6-7 total laminotomy, complete tumor removal and laminoplasty. Histologically, the mass showed a capsulated nodular lesion composed of capillary-sized vascular channels, which were tightly packed into nodules separated by fibrous septa. These features were consistent with capillary hemangioma.
