  • A study was conducted in order to remove PVC from the waste plastic film mixture. The fittings of Air Table was modified to increase the separation efficiency of PVC. By using the improved air table, the PE and PVC was successfully separated from PVC-PE film mixture with the yield of PE 90% or more and with the content of PVC in PE 1% or less. The detail of the separation condition and result will be discussed in this paper.

  • Research for renewable energy is being performed since it has the merits of little pollution of the environment and sustainable energy resources. Microalgae is attractive as a renewable energy resource. Biomass of the microalgae can be produced by mass culturing, and bulk harvest technology of is needed to produce biomass continuously. Recently, ultrasonic waves were used to harvest the cultivated microalgae continuously. In this study, the separation process using ultrasonic waves was performed to effectively harvest the microalgae. An ultrasonic wave separation resonator was designed and manufactured based on the acoustic field analysis. Separation experiments using design of experiment were carried out, and the influence of experimental variables from the ultrasonic wave separation process was investigated. Mixing conditions of variables were estimated to obtain high separation efficiency and a large microalgae harvest. Experimental results for suitable mixing conditions were compared with simulation results calculated from the state equation.

  • Government efforts on membrane technology started in early 1980 with Membrane Development Program supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Several independent research projects on liquid separation, gas separation, hollow fiber producing program etc. were carried out during the 1980s. The RaCER was commissioned by MOCI for the general management of the project which had its aims in establishing the base for developing membranes, modules and systems for liquid separation in August 1993. More recently, in June 1995, a program for developing membranes for oxygen separation, nitrogen separation and hydrogen separation was initiated. This paper outlines the brief history of membrane technology development in Korea from the introduction of membrane filtration technology during the late 1960s to present.

  • In response to the industrial needs for automated handling of very thin solar cell wafers, this paper presents the design concept for the individual wafer separation from the stacked wafers by utilizing continuous water jet. The experimental apparatus for automated wafer separation was constructed and it includes the water jet system and the microprocessor controlled wafer stack advancing system. Through a series of tests, the performance of the proposed design is quantified into the success rate of single wafer separation and the rapidity of processing wafer stack. Also, the inclination angle of wafer equipped cartridge and the water jet flowrate are found to be important parameters to be considered for process optimization. The proposed design shows the concept for fast and efficient processing of wafer separation and can be implemented in the automated manufacturing of silicon based solar cell wafers.

  • The main objective was to evaluate the efficiencies of different separation techniques, such as gravity separation, magnetic separation, and aerial separation. Zinc and cadmium removal efficiencies by gravity separation and magnetic separation were 28.3~29.3% and 19.1%, respectively, and were higher than the efficiency obtained by aerial separation. Results showed that the combination of gravity separation and magnetic separation in series which was to maximize the removal efficiencies gave removal efficiency of 21.5~38.7% for zinc and 22.1~23.4% for cadmium. The mass of soil meeting the regulation standards for zinc and cadmium after retrieval from the combined separation process accounted for approximately 80% of the treated soil that would be reusable without the pre-treatment procedure as the neutralization process using in the soil washing method. Physical separation techniques utilizing heavy metal properties are the alternative method to remediate heavy-metal contaminated soils in environmental and economic aspects.
