  • Many plants have been improved to adapt the target of the biological treatment processes changed from organics to nutrients since the water quality criteria of effluent was reinforced and included T-N and T-P for the municipal wastewater treatment plant. To meet the criteria of T-N and T-P, the conventional biological reactor such as aeration tank in activated sludge system is changed to the BNR (biological nutrient removal) processes, which are typically divided into three units as anaerobic, anoxic and oxic tank. Therefore, the solid separation process should be redesigned to fit the BNR processes in case of the application of the DAF (dissolved air flotation) process as an alternatives because the solid-liquid separation characteristics of microbial flocs produced in the BNR processes are also different from that of activated sludge system as well. The results of this study revealed that the microbial floc of the anaerobic tank was the hardest to be separated among the three steps of the unit tanks for the BNR processes. On the contrary, the oxic tank was best for the removal efficiency of nutrients as well as suspended solid. In addition, the removal efficiency of nutrients was much improved under the chemical coagulation treatment though coagulation was not indispensable with a respect to the solid separation. On the other hand, in spited that the separation time for the microbial floc from the BNR processes were similar to the typical particles like clay flocs, over $2.32{\times}10^3$ ppm of air volume concentration was required to keep back the break-up of the bubble-floc agglomerates.

  • Performances and internal behaviors of the upflow hybrid anaerobic filters treating a dairy wastewater were analyzed to identify the functions and roles of the modular crossflow media and sludge bed layer and to discover their interrelationship in the filter. The media could perform independent biological and physical separation role without buildup of sludge bed, while the role of sludge bed was dependent on the function of the media. The filter packed with the crossflow media did not necessarily require the formation of sludge bed when treating a dairy wastewater. Biological contribution of the media was controlled by that of biologically active sludge bed complementing mutually each other. The gas-liquid-solid separation capability of the media was indispensible to ensure the active biological role of sludge bed, since sludge bed buildup without the media had no independently effective biological function. It was believed that the filter in itself could also function as a selector for physical gas-liquid-solid separation resulting in selectively concentrating particles with superior settleability in sludge bed. The sludge bed in the filter played a key role in the physical solids capture from influent as well as biological organics removal.

  • It was evaluated whether magnetic beads able to add the functionality of environment purification can be employed in processing soil pollutants. In this study, the micro scale magnetic beads containing carboxyl groups were mixed with water and the soil $(<0.025{\cal}mm) filtered through a sieve, and then it was agitated before isolating the magnetic substances by the use of outer magnetic force. The factors considered at this step were the ratio of soil to magnetic beads, ratio of soil to water, size of the tube where the reaction occur, and intensity of the magnetic force. From the separation experiment between soil and magnetic beads, it was concluded that the magnetic beads and water quantity have an impact on the degree of separation, yet the size of the tube and magnetic force does not have a considerable effect upon that in this small-scaled experiment. Through this experiment, the reaction conditions were optimized to achieve $90\~100\%$ of separation. Therefore, it was concluded that when the functionalized magnetic beads is introduced to environmental processing, it is able to be adopted to the soil processing as well as the water processing.

  • Degree of separation and adhesion of dye and stain particles has been measured usually by the rate of reflection of light. However, it could be proved that the relation between the quantity of stain and the rate of reflection greatly varied with kinds of stain and states of adhesion. For this study, several pieces of cotton and polyester having different states of stain adhesion were prepared by staining them with two kinds of artificial stain different in color: Ferric Oxide and Ferric Oxynate. Every piece went through soilremoval test which employed two surfactants: Anionic LAS and Cationic M2-100. After the operation, relations between quantity of pre-soilremoval stain and rate of reflection were measured, as well as those between quantity of post-soilremoval stain and rate of reflection. Rate of reflection and quantity of stain were not proportional in measurement to the pieces stained with Ferric Oxide and Ferric Oxynate. The consequence was also the same with cotton and polyester. That held true of the fat-stained textile. With the same quantity of stain, rate of reflection varied according to the magnitude of stain particles, and the state of adhesion influenced the magnitude of stain particles a great deal.

  • The influences of fluorescence, scattering, and flocculation in turbid material by light scattering were interpreted for the scattered fluorescence intensity and wavelength, it has been studied the molecular properties by the spectroscopy of laser induced fluorescence (LIF). The effects of optical properties in scattering media have been found by the optical $parameters({\mu}_s,\;{\mu}_a,\;{\mu}_t)$. Flocculation is an important step in many solid-liquid separation processes and is widely used. When two particles approach each other, interactions of several colloid particles can come into play which may have major effect on the flocculation and LIF process, The value of scattering coefficient ${\mu}_s$ is large by means of the increasing particles of scatterer it has been found that the slope decays exponentially as a function of distance from laser source to detector. It may also aid in designing the best model for oil chemistry, biopharmaceutical products, laser medicine and application of medical engineering on LIF and coagulation in particle transport mode.

  • Recently the Government has announced updated water quality standards for wastewater treatment effluent (become effective in 2012). That includes highly enforced regulations for T-P, BOD and COD, and a large budget, in particular for phosphorus removal, was set by the Ministry of environment. Chemical coagulation destabilizes colloidal particles so that particles grow to larger flocs, and solid particles are removed by solid-liquid separation. The efficiency of chemical coagulation depends on a various factors, including coagulant types and costs, construction and operation costs for the treatment facilities and so on. The proper selection should be based on the treatment efficiency of coagulants and underlying costs. The current research was to evaluate the treatment efficiencies of coagulants on a variety of wastewater influents and to develop saturation curves for several water quality parameters. Typical $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $FeCl_3$ were tested under a range of coagulant concentrations. The pollutant removal efficiencies of chemical treatment both for the $Al_2(SO_4)_3$ and $FeCl_3$ were especially high for T-P, followed by SS, BOD and COD. Correlation test also proved the highest relationship between SS and T-P.

  • A three-electrode type reflective display (electronic paper) is designed to apply an independent electric field to each three electrodes of the cell including two electric-type of particles and electrically neutral color fluid, so single color realization is possible. In particular, the movement of particles and optical properties are decided by the electric field between two electrodes on the lower substrate. So, the effect of electric field by the distance between two electrodes on the lower substrate is studied with electrode spacing with $10{\mu}m$, $15{\mu}m$, $20{\mu}m$, and $25{\mu}m$. By our experimentation, the driving voltage induces more reliable movement of charged particles and the optical properties as compared with the threshold voltage. We ascertain the single color realization and non-inverted particle separation is possible. So the more desirable optical properties are observed in case of the short electrode like $10{\mu}m$.

  • In this study, a hydrocyclone operated by centrifugal force was examined as a part of dredge system of lake sediments. It does not help dehydration of the sediments, but also enables the classification of fine particles in the stable and sanitary treatment. Several experiments were performed focusing on the separation efficiency under the condition of room temperature with virtual sediment samples and simulated particles. As a result of the experiment, it was found that the apex size of the cyclone greatly affected the cut diameter(d$_{50}$), and high density particles were separated more effectively.y.

  • Carbon micro particles with dimple patterns were produced by electro-spraying a solution of pitch in tetrahydrofuran. Particle formation depended on separation in an electrical field and volatilization of the solvent. More than 80% of the obtained carbon exhibited an average particle size of less than 50 μm. X-ray diffraction analysis suggests that the carbon with dimple patterns has increased crystallinity after heat treatment.
