  • The 3-dimensional flow field has been investigated by numerical analysis in a 2.5MW wind turbine blade. Complicated and separated flaw phenomena in the wind turbine blade were captured by the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) steady flaw simulation using general-purpose code, CFX and the mechanism of vortex structure behavior is elucidated. The vortical flow field in a wind turbine rotor is dominated by the tip vortex and hub separation vortex. The tip vortex starts to be formed near the blade tip leading edge. As the tip vortex develops in the tangential direction, interacting with boundary layer from the blade tip trailing edge. The hub separation vortex is generated near the blade hub leading edge and develops nearly in the span-wise direction. Furthermore, 3-dimensional blade tip shape has been designed for increasing shrift power and reducing thrust force on the wind turbine blade. It is expected that the behavior of the tip vortex and hub separation vortex plays a major role in aerodynamic and aeroacoustic characteristics.

  • The shape optimization of blade sweep in a transonic axial compressor rotor of NASA Rotor 37 has been performed using response surface method and the three-dimensional Wavier-Stokes analysis. Two shape variables of the rotor blade, which are used to define the rotor sweep, are introduced to increase the adiabatic efficiency of the compressor. Throughout the optimization, optimal shape having a backward sweep is obtained. Adiabatic efficiency, which is the objective function of the present optimization, is successfully increased. Separation line due to the interference between a shock and surface boundary layer on the blade suction surface is moved downstream for the optimized blade compared to the reference one. The increase in adiabatic efficiency for the optimized blade is caused by suppression of the separation due to a shock on the blade suction surface.

  • Around the world, fossil fuel energy is being replaced with renewable energy due to environmental problems and sharp price increases. Many countries are making a change in the direction of moving toward eco-friendliness by reducing carbon emissions. Among renewable energies, the wind energy is eco-friendly because it produces electricity by wind power without carbon emissions, and it attracts attention worldwide as a great alternative to the exhausted fuel energy. To improve the efficiency of wind turbines, large and extra-large wind turbines have been developed all over the world by increasing install and diameter. These wind turbines have difficulty in transport after manufacture because of their size and height. Since the height of wind turbine blades is higher than the existing tunnel height, it is impossible to transport them. In this study, therefore, a 5 MW class large blade was separated for transport easiness as wind power generators became larger globally. Aerodynamic design and analysis was carried out for the blade. After performing structural design and analysis with the model designed, the stress concentration of the analyzed model and the various factors for consideration when separating were considered to conduct the study of selecting the optimal blade separation positions.

  • Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted for an internal flow in an axial flow stator of a diagonal flow fan. A corner separation near the hub surface and the suction surface of a stator blade was focused on, and further, three-dimensional vortices in separated flow were investigated by the numerical analysis. At low flow rate of 80% of the design flow rate, a corner separation of the stator between the suction surface and the hub surface can be found in both experimental and calculated results. Separation vortices are observed in the limiting streamline patterns both on the blade suction and on the hub surfaces at 80% of the design flow rate in the calculated results. It also can be observed in the streamline pattern that both vortices from the blade suction surface and from the hub surface keep vortex structures up to far locations from these wall surfaces. An attempt to explain the vortices within a three-dimensional separation is introduced by using vortex filaments.

  • In this study, the effect of relative position of the blade for the fixed vane has been investigated on blade surface heat transfer. The experiments were conducted in a low speed stationary annular cascade, and heat transfer of blade was examined for six positions within a pitch. Turbine test section has one stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length of the tested blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade having flat tip is about $2.5\%$ of the blade chord. For the detailed mass transfer measurements on the blade surfaces, a naphthalene sublimation technique was used. The inlet flow Reynolds number is fixed to $1.5{\times}10^5$. Complex heat transfer characteristics are observed on the blade surface due to various flow characteristics, such as separation bubble, relaminarization, transition to turbulence and leakage vortices. The distributions of velocity and turbulence intensity change significantly with the relative position due to the blockage effect of the blade. This causes the variation of heat transfer patterns on the blade surface. The results show that the flow near the leading edge get highly disturbed and deflected toward the either side of the blade when the blade leading edge is positioned close to the trailing edge of the vane. Therefore, separation bubble disappears on the pressure side and overall heat transfer on the relaminarization region is increased. But, due to reduced tip gap flow at the upstream region, the effect of leakage flow on the upstream region of the blade surface is weakened. Thus, the heat transfer characteristics significantly change with the blade positions.

  • In this study, aeroelastic response analyses have been conducted for a 3D wind turbine blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics(CSD) has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responsed of wind turbine blade. Vibration analyses of rotating wind-turbine blade have been conducted using the general nonlinear finite element program, SAMCEF (Ver.6.3). Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)equations with spalart-allmaras turbulence model are solved for unsteady flow problems of the rotating turbine blade model. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D turbine blade for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. Detailed dynamic responses and instantaneous Mach contour on the blade surfaces considering flow-separation effects are presented to show the multi-physical phenomenon of the rotating wind-turbine blade model.

  • The present study investigated the effect of relative position of the blade on blade surface heat transfer. The experiments were conducted in a low speed wind tunnel with a stationary annular turbine cascade. The test section has a single turbine stage composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length of the blade is 150 mm and the mean tip clearance of the blade is $2.5\%$ of the blade chord. The Reynolds number based on blade inlet velocity and chord length is $1.5{\times}105$ and mean turbulence intensity is about $3\%$. To investigate the effect of relative position of blade, the blade at six different positions in a pitch was examined. For the detailed mass transfer measurements, a naphthalene sublimation technique was used. In general, complex heat transfer characteristics are observed on the blade surface due to various flow characteristics, such as a laminar flow separation, relaminarization, flow acceleration, transition to turbulence and tip leakage vortices. The results show that the blade relative position affects those heat transfer characteristics because the distributions of incoming flow velocity and turbulence intensity are changed. Especially, the heat transfer pattern on the near-tip region is significantly affected by the relative position of the blade because the effect of tip leakage vortex is strongly dependent on the blade position. On the pressure side, the effect of blade position is not so significant as on the suction side surface although the position and the size of the separation bubble are changed.

  • It is important requirement to properly evaluate the aerodynamic performance and characteristics during preliminary design of a centrifugal compressor. In this study the centrifugal compressor was calculated for variations of mass flow and blade Mach number by means of single passage steady state. A lot of quantitative performance values were obtained and through the obtained values the aerodynamic performance characteristics of designed impeller and vaned diffuser were investigated. The results were classified by blade Mach number to analyze characteristics and the aerodynamic performance was examined at choke of impeller, diffuser and separation of diffuser.

  • It is addressed that the turbulent broadband sound power from a sirocco fan can be modeled by the trailing edge noise. The trailing edge noise is usually influenced by inflow turbulence, separation, and boundary layer on the blade. The design parameters such as solidity(c/s) and stagger angle are specified to predict performance and noise level because the separation and slip velocity are strong1y affected by them along with the flow coefficient. • In order to obtain high efficiency and low resistance droplet separation apparatus, axial vane type gas-liquid separators with different guide vanes were designed, and the RNG $k-{\varepsilon}$ model as well as discrete phase model (DPM) were used to investigate the flow pattern inside the separators. It was shown that the tangential velocity distribution under different guide vanes have Rankine vortex characteristics, pressure distribution exhibits a high similarity which value becomes big as the increase of the blade outlet angle and the decrease of the guide vane numbers. The increase of the guide vane numbers and the decrease of the blade outlet angle could make separation improve significantly. The separation efficiency is almost 100% when the droplet diameter is bigger than $40{\mu}m$.
