  • The present study focuses on the characteristics of a supersonic jet flowing from a rectangular nozzle exit on a flat plate. Flow visualization techniques using schlieren and kerosene-lampblack tracing are utilized to investigate shock reflection structures and boundary-layer separations over a flat plate. Wall pressure measurements are also carried out to quantitatively analyze the flow structures. All observations are repeated for multiple jet flow boundary conditions by varying the flap length and nozzle pressure ratio. The experimental results show that the jet flow structures over the flat plate are highly three-dimensional with strong bleeding flows from the plate sides, and that they are sensitive to plate length and nozzle pressure ratio. A multi-component force measurement device is also utilized to observe the characteristics of the jet flow thrust vectoring over the plate. The maximum thrust deflection angle of the jet is about $8^{\circ}$, demonstrating the applicability of thrust vector control via a flat plate installed at the nozzle exit.

  • The in-plane vibration response of a clamped circular plate should be predicted in many applications. Up to now, papers on the in-plane vibration of rectangular plate are published. However, analytical derivation on the in-plane vibration of the clamped circular plate is not carried out. Therefore, the in-plane vibration of the clamped circular plate is the concern of this paper. In order to derive the equations of motion for the clamped circular plate in the cylindrical coordinate, the kinetic energy and potential energy for the in-plane behavior are obtained by us ing the stress-strain-displacement expressions. Application of Hamilton's principle leads to two sets of differential equations. These displacement equations were highly coupled. It is possible to obtain a simpler set of equations by introducing Helmholtz decomposition. Substituting them into the coupled differential equations, we obtain the uncoupled equations of motion. In order to solve them, we assume that the solutions are harmonic. Then, they lead to the wave equations. Using the separation of variable, we obtain the general solutions for the equations. Based on the solutions, the displacements for r and $\theta$ direction are assumed. Finally we obtain the frequency equation for the clamped circular plate by the application of boundary conditions. The derived equation is compared with the finite element analysis for validation by using the some numerical examples.

  • In this paper, we analyzed weak points of press process with the rolled thin flexible plate. The problems which are caused by the adhesion of blank on the surface of die and the separation of blank from scrap during its transportation after blanking were solved by the redesign of the structure of die and the development of special equipment for material handling. It is our purpose to make better the automation of blanking process and the safety for worker by the improvement of flexible material handling.

  • DNA structure studies attract many interests in pharmaceutical, biochemical and medical disciplines. Among them, base pairs play a vital role in biological information transfer. Therefore, they need to be analyzed in various ways and the pair of guaninine and cytosine is the present analytical object. Separation of guanine and cytosine was researched by Aspen chromatography simulator and HPLC(High Performance Liquid Chromatography) experiments. Aspen chromatography simulation resulted in various chromatograms with changes of sample concentration, eluent flow rate and number of plate. The resolutions and yields of guanine and cytosine were calculated to obtain a best separation condition. $C_{18}$ HPLC column and water/methanol/acetic acid mixture(90/10/0.2) were used for separation of guanine and cytosine. HPLC parameters(resolution and number of theoretical plate) were calculated under different flow rates and sample concentrations. Aspen chromatography simulation and HPLC experimental results were compared with fair agreement.

  • Experimental research was conducted to investigate the characteristic of various CFRP strengthening methods. A total of 4 specimens of 3.3m length were tested in four point bending after strengthening them with externally bonded CFRP plates. The CFRP plates were bonded without prestress or with prestress levels of CFRP plate strain $0.5\%$. The non-prestressed specimen without anchor plate failed by separation of the plate from the beam due to premature debonding while the non-prestressed specimen with anchor plate failed by CFRP fracture and showed the significant increase of ductility capacity. In addition, the prestressed specimens failed by concrete compression failure. The maximum load and ductility capacity were most significantly increased.

  • Plate-fin heat exchanger is a kind of compact heat exchangers with a good performance in heat transfer. It is widely used in various engineering fields such as aerospace, chemical and biomedical industries. Quantitative and qualitative flow visualization study were performed using the water model of commercial plate-fin heat exchanger with header angles of $30^{\circ}$. The Reynolds number was 100. Conventional digital particle image velocimetry was used to measure the instantaneous velocity fields of the header region and the flow visualization using dye injection and hydrogen bubble method were applied to capture the qualitative flow characteristics. The results showed the existence of separation flow region at the junction area and the bottom wall of the exit region.

  • The method of moments is applied to numerically compute the electrostatic capacitance of a parallel-plate rectangular capacitor of finite area. Each plate is discretized into 900 patches per unit area to ensure a high accuracy of computation. To further enhance computational results, the impedance matrix elements are additionally evaluated in the case that the observation patch is located above or below the source patch in the vertical direction. To examine the fringing effect at the edges of the capacitor, the normalized capacitances are computed as a function of separation distance. After these results have been verified by Palmer's formula, this method is extended to the computation of capacitances between two different size plates.

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation of the mechanical behaviour of extended end - plate steel connections including comparison with full size experiments. Contact and friction laws have been taken into account with nonlinear, three dimensional finite element analysis. Material and geometric nonlinearities have been implemented to the model, as well. Results are then compared with experimental tests conducted at the Jordan University of Science and Technology. According to the most significant observation of the analysis, a separation of the column flange from the extended end - plate occurs. Other important structural parameters of the connection, like the impact of some column stiffeners on the overall response, local buckling of the column and friction of the beam to column interface, have been examined as well.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the heat transfer enhancement by the multiple tripping wires installed on a flat plate. Naphthalene sublimation technique is used to measure the local mass transfer coefficients, and then heat transfer coefficients are calculated using heat/mass transfer analogy. Experiments are performed for the developed and developing flow conditions. Local and average heat transfer coefficients from the flat plate with three tripping wires are compared with those of no and one tripping wire. Remarkable heat transfer enhancements are found resulting from the boundary layer separation by the tripping wires, especially in the laminar boundary layer.

  • Recently, STS 301L joints of side panels to frames for stainless steel rolling stock have been made out by using existing welding methods including Resistance Spot Welding, Laser Welding and Arc Welding. Most of the processes were jointed by spot welding because it is faster at welding and comparatively less expensive for investment in welding facilities than other methods. During spot welding, however, indentation of the metal surface was made due to pressure and melting property of welding. Moreover, since the melting metal was forced to periphery of the plate as indentation was made, sheet separation, which cracked apart between jointed sheets, was carried out. A slight deformation which resulted from sheet separation deteriorated the emotional quality of railway vehicles. This paper suggests that by processing conventional spot electrode tip appropriately, melting metal is able to push up around the processed part (Hollow Spot Electrode Tip) and prevent from being dislodged from first place to periphery. Consequently, sheet separation is remarkably decreased. Also, the emotional quality of appearance of stainless steel rolling stock is enhanced considerably.
