Unsteady Aerodynamic Characteristics depending on Reduced Frequency for a Pitching NACA0012 Airfoil at Rec=2.3×104

  • Most of small air vehicles with moving wing fly at low Reynolds number condition and the reduced frequency of the moving wing ranges from 0.0 to 1.0. The physical phenomena over the wing dramatically vary with the reduced frequency. This study examines experimentally the effect of the reduced frequency at low Reynolds number. The NACA0012 airfoil performs sinusoidal pitching motion with respect to the quarter chord with the four reduced frequencies of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.76 at the Reynolds number $2.3{\times}10^4$. Smoke-wire flow visualization, unsteady surface pressure measurement, and unsteady force calculation are conducted. At the reduced frequency of 0.1 and 0.2, various boundary layer events such as reverse flow, discrete vortices, separation and reattachment change the amplitude and the rotation direction of the unsteady force hysteresis. However, the boundary layer events abruptly disappear at the reduced frequency of 0.4 and 0.76. Especially at the reduced frequency of 0.76, the local variation of the unsteady force with respect to the angle of attack completely vanishes. These results lead us to the conclusion that the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the reduced frequency of 0.2 and 0.4 are clearly distinguishable and the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics below the reduced frequency of 0.2 are governed by the boundary layer events.

  • As a communications system and using the wireless devices is increased at the world, the interference among devices at 2.4GHz band become issue. New complex content technology as education, concert, broadcast, thema-park are developed between Virtual Reality technology and tradition. That is expect an annual growth rate of more than 14%. Almost Virtual Reality devices use motion sense or a wireless joystick. Therefore it is necessarily to analyze the coexistence between Virtual Reality devices and Wi-Fi in the ISM band. The interference scenario and propagation of the Extended Hata Model was established to analyze the interference from WLAN into Virtual Reality devices. Through simulation results based on Monte-Carlo principle, separation frequency was obtained to protect WLAN interference from Virtual Reality devices.

The investigation of ship maneuvering with hydrodynamic effects between ships in curved narrow channel

  • The hydrodynamic interaction between two large vessels can't be neglected when two large vessels are closed to each other in restricted waterways such as in a harbor or narrow channel. This paper is mainly concerned with the ship maneuvering motion based on the hydrodynamic interaction effects between two large vessels moving each other in curved narrow channel. In this research, the characteristic features of the hydrodynamic interaction forces between two large vessels are described and illustrated, and the effects of velocity ratio and the spacing between two vessels are summarized and discussed. Also, the Inchon outer harbor area through the PALMI island channel in Korea was selected, and the ship maneuvering simulation was carried out to propose an appropriate safe speed and distance between two ships, which is required to avoid sea accident in confined waters. From the inspection of this investigation, it indicates the following result. Under the condition of $SP_{12}{\leq}0:5L$, it may encounter a dangerous tendency of grounding or collision due to the combined effect of the interaction between ships and external forces. Also considering the interaction and wind effect as a parameter, an overtaken and overtaking vessel in narrow channel can navigate while keeping its own original course under the following conditions; the lateral separation between two ships is about kept at 0.6 times of ship length and 15 degrees of range in maximum rudder angle. On the other hand, two ships while overtaking in curved narrow channel such as Inchon outer harbor in Korea should be navigated under the following conditions; $SP_{12}$ is about kept at 1.0 times of ship length and the wind velocity should not be stronger than 10 m/s.

Percolation Approach to the Morphology of Rigid-Flexible Block Copolymer on Gas Permeability

  • Polyimides and related polymers, when synthesized from aromatic monomers, have generally rigid chain structures resulting in a low gas permeability. The rigidity of polymer chains reduces the segmental motion of chains and works as a good barrier against gas transport. To overcome the limit of use as materials of gas separation membranes due to low gas permeability, block copolymers with the incorporation of flexible segments like siloxane linkage and ether linkage have been studied. These block copolymers have microphase-separated structures composed of microdomains of flexible poly(dimethylsiloxane) or polyether segments and of rigid polyimides segments. In case of rigid-flexible block copolymers, the characteristics of both phases for gas permeation are of great difference. The permeation of gas molecules occurs favorably through microdomains of flexible segments, whereas those of rigid segments hinder the permeation of gas molecules. Accordingly the increase of content of flexible segments in a rigid polymer matrix will increase the gas permeability of the membrane linearly. However, this prediction does not satisfy enough many experimental results and in particular the drastic increase of the permeability is observed in a certain volume fraction. It was proposed that the gas transport mechanism is dominated by diffusion rather than gas solubility in a certain content of flexible phase if solution-diffusion mechanism is adopted. However, the transition from solubility-dependent to diffusion-dependent cannot be explained by the understanding of mechanism itself. Therefore, we consider an effective chemical path which permeable phase can form in a microheterogenous medium, and percolation concept is introduced to describe the permeability transition at near threshold where for the first time a percolation path occurs. The volume fraction of both phases is defined as V$_{\alpha}$ and V$_{\beta}$ in block copolymers, and the volume of $\beta$ phase in the threshold forming geometrically a traversing channel is defined as V$_{\betac}$. On-Line Recognition of Cursive Hangeul by Extended DP Matching Method (擴張된 DP 매칭법에 依한 흘림체 한글 온라인 認識)

  • This paper presents an application of the extended DP matching method to the on-line recognition of cursive Hangeul (Korean characters). We decrease the number of matching's objects by performing rough classification matching which makes the best use of features in the first and the last segment of Hangeul. By adding the extraction function of the basic character patterns to DP matching method, we try to calculate precisely the difference among Hangeul. The extraction of the basic character patterns is done by examining the features of segments in character. Applying the extended DP matching method to the on-line recognition of cursive Hangeul, absorption of writing motion and stable separation of strokes can be performed with flexibility.

Application of the V2-F Turbulence Model for Flow Analysis of Turbomachinery (V2-F 난류 모델의 터보기계 유동 해석 적용)

  • Since a turbomachine has complex flow characteristics, which are caused by adverse pressure gradient and high speed motion, an elaborate turbulence model is needed to accurately predict the flow. Some turbulence models such as an algebraic or a two-equation eddy viscosity model have been used for in-house RANS-code, but it is difficult to obtain good result for several complex flows. In this study, Durbin's V2-F turbulence model, which has been known for better prediction for severe flow separation, is applied to T-Flow. It was validated for simple cases such as channel and compressor cascade, and its applicability to turbomachinery was shown by analyzing internal flow of a single rotor. As a result, the V2-F turbulence model shows better blade surface pressure distribution than the one-and-two equation turbulence model.

An Optical Surfacing Technique of the Best-fitted Spherical Surface of the Large Optics Mirror with Ultra Precision Polishing Machine (대형 광학계 연마 장비에 의한 대구경 반사경의 최적 근사 구면 제조 방법에 관한 연구)

  • This paper describes a novel method to surface large optics mirror with an extremely high hardness, which could replace the high cost of the repetitive off-line measurement steps and the large ultra-precision grinding machine with ultra-positioning control of 10 nm resolution. A lot of diamond pellet to be attached on the convex aluminum base consists of a grinding tool for the concave large mirror, and the tool was pressured down on the large mirror blank. The tool motion at an interval on the spiral path was controlled with each feed rate as the dwell time in the conventional computer-controlled polishing. The shape to be surfaced was measured directly by a touch probe on the machine without any separation of the mirror blank. Total 40 iterative steps of the surfacing and measurement could demonstrate the form error of RMS $7.8{\mu}m$, surface roughness of Ra $0.2{\mu}m$ for the mirror blank with diameter of 1 m and spherical radius of curvature of 5400 mm.

Effect of the Inner Material and Pipe Geometry on the Flow and Induced Radiated Noise (파이프 내 흡음재 및 형상에 따른 유동 및 방사소음에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • Noise and vibration, which occur in a pipe, are usually caused by the interaction between the turbulent flow and nearby wall. Although it can be estimated by a simple case of expanded pipes having complex turbulent flow, the radiated noise is highly dependent upon the size, shape, and thickness of the given model. In addition, the radiated noise propagates and has serious interference and destabilization effects on the surrounding systems, which can lead to fatigue fracture and failure. This study took advantage of the variety of commercial programs, such as FLUENT (flow solver), NASTRAN (dynamic motion solver of complex structures) and VIRTUAL LAB (radiated noise solver) based on the boundary element method (BEM), to understand the underlying physics of flow noise. The expanded pipe has separation and a high pressure drop because of the abrupt change in the cross-section. Based on the radiated noise calculations, the noise level was reduced to around 20 dB in the range of 100-500 Hz.

Investigation of dynamic response of "bridge girder-telpher-load" crane system due to telpher motion

  • The moving load causes the occurrence of vibrations in civil engineering structures such as bridges, railway lines, bridge cranes and others. A novel engineering method for separation of the variables in the differential equation of the elastic line of Bernoulli-Euler beam has been developed. The method can be utilized in engineering structures, leading to "a beam under moving load model" with generalized boundary conditions. This method has been implemented for analytical study of the dynamic response of the metal structure of a single girder bridge crane due to the telpher movement along the bridge girder. The modeled system includes: a crane bridge girder; a telpher, moving with a constant horizontal velocity; a load, elastically fixed to the telpher. The forced vibrations with their own frequencies and with a forced frequency, due to the telpher movement, have been analyzed. The loading resulting from the telpher uniform movement along the bridge girder is cyclical, which is a prerequisite for nucleation and propagation of fatigue cracks. The concept of "dynamic coefficient" has been introduced, which is defined as a ratio of the dynamic deflection of the bridge girder due to forced vibrations, to the static one. This ratio has been compared with the known from the literature empirical dynamic coefficient, which is due to the telpher track unevenness. The introduced dynamic coefficient shows larger values and has to be taken into account for engineering calculations of the bridge crane metal structure. In order to verify the degree of approximation, the obtained results have been compared with FEM outcomes. An additional comparison has been made with the exact solution, proposed by Timoshenko, for the case of simply supported beam subjected to a moving force. The comparisons show a good agreement.

A Plight Test Method for the System Identification of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (무인항공기의 시스템 식별을 위한 비행시험기법)

  • In this paper, a flight test method is described for the system identification of the unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with an automatic flight control system. Multistep inputs are applied for both longitudinal mode and lateral/directional excitation. Optimal time step for excitation is sought to provide the broad input bandwidth. A programmed mode flight test method provides high-quality flight data for system identification using the flight control computer with the longitudinal and lateral/directional autopilot which enables the separation of each motion during the flight test. In addition, exact actuating input that is almost equivalent to the designed one guarantees the highest input frequency attainable. Several repetitive flight tests were implemented in the calm air in order to extract the consistent system model for the air vehicle. The enhanced airborne data acquisition system endowed the high-quality flight data for the system identification. The flight data were effectively used to the system identification of the unmanned aerial vehicle.
