Effects of Integrated Nursing Practice Simulation-based Training on Stress, Interest in Learning, and Problem-Solving Ability of Nursing Students (통합적 간호실무 시뮬레이션 기반 훈련이 간호대학생의 스트레스, 학습흥미, 문제해결능력에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: In this study the time point of effects that repeat exposure to simulation-based nursing training has on stress, interest in learning, and problem-solving abilities were identified. Methods: Participants for this study were 75 nursing college students in Seoul. In a preliminary survey data were collected and measured for the general characteristics, stress, interest in learning, and problem-solving abilities of the students. Then, stress was assessed before performance of each of four-rounds of simulation training scenarios. After each simulation round, interest in learning and problem-solving abilities were assessed. Results: With respect to stress, no significant differences were found when comparing the results of the preliminary survey to those of each of the simulation-based training exercises. For the sub-items of interest in learning, interest in nursing knowledge and interest in clinical training significantly increased between the preliminary survey and the $4^{th}$ survey. Interest in lab training increased significantly at the $1^{st}$ survey. Problem solving abilities showed a significant increase from the preliminary at each of the survey points. Conclusion: Increasing the exposure of nursing students to simulation-based training enhances their interest in learning and problem-solving abilities. Therefore it is necessary to have education strategies that includes various simulation experiences for students.

Isolation of ten unrecorded yeasts from soil in Korea

  • In 2020, as a subset study to discover indigenous yeast species in Korea, a total of 22 yeast species were isolated from soil samples collected in Gwangju-si, Gyeonggi-do. Among them, 10 strains were unreported species. From the high 26S rRNA gene sequence similarity and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with the closest species, it was determined that each strain belonged independent and predefined yeast species. The 22 strains were assigned to the genera Dothiora (1 strain), Sarocladium (1 strain), Tetrapisispora (1 strain) and Torulaspora (2 strains) of the phylum Ascomycota; the genera Erythrobasidium (1 strain), Leucosporidium (4 strains), Ustilentyloma (2 strains), Fellozyma (1 strain), Sampaiozyma (2 strains), Filobasidium (1 strain), Solicoccozyma (2 strains) and Vishniacozyma (4 strains) of the phylum Basidiomycota. This is the first official report of the following species in Korea: Dothiora cannabinae (1 strain), Sarocladium strictum (1 strain), Fellozyma inositophila (1 strain), Filobasidium magnum (1 strain), Solicoccozyma phenolicus (1 strain), Solicoccozyma terreus(1 strain), Vishniacozyma tephrensis(1 strain) and Vishniacozyma victoriae (3 strains). Cell morphology, phenotypic features and biochemical features are described in the Species Description section.

A Comparative Study on Deepfake Detection using Gray Channel Analysis (Gray 채널 분석을 사용한 딥페이크 탐지 성능 비교 연구)

  • Recent development of deep learning techniques for image generation has led to straightforward generation of sophisticated deepfakes. However, as a result, privacy violations through deepfakes has also became increased. To solve this issue, a number of techniques for deepfake detection have been proposed, which are mainly focused on RGB channel-based analysis. Although existing studies have suggested the effectiveness of other color model-based analysis (i.e., Grayscale), their effectiveness has not been quantitatively validated yet. Thus, in this paper, we compare the effectiveness of Grayscale channel-based analysis with RGB channel-based analysis in deepfake detection. Based on the selected CNN-based models and deepfake datasets, we measured the performance of each color model-based analysis in terms of accuracy and time. The evaluation results confirmed that Grayscale channel-based analysis performs better than RGB-channel analysis in several cases.

  • Pregnancy and delivery are the God's blessing as well as the right of all married women. But, these are agonizing events for the infertile women. Therefore, supportive nursing care for the infertile women is crucial in the process of diagnosis and treatment of infertility. The introduction of In Vitro Fertilization is a solution for infertility. But we take it serious that such socio-cultural factors as patriarchism, sex role, and motherhood are negatively influencing infertility women's experiences. Thus, nurses who take care of the infertile women need to have feministic perspectives as well as medical information, and expertise so that they could reach a comprehensive understanding on infertile women's experiences.

Lipid Polysaccharides have a Detrimental Effect on the Function of the Ovaries and Uterus in Mice through Increased Pro-Inflammatory Cytokines

  • As the number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccinations increases, various side effects are being reported, and menstrual abnormalities have been reported as a side effect in women. However, it is still unclear whether the COVID-19 vaccine has detrimental effects on the female reproductive system. Therefore, we investigated the effect of excessive immune response on reproductive function by administering Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) instead of the COVID-19 vaccine. The immune response in mice was induced by injection of LPS. Mice injected with saline 5 times were used as a control group, and mice injected with LPS 5 times were used as an experimental group. Repeated administration of LPS significantly reduced the number of corpus luteum (CL). On the other hand, the injection of LPS did not affect the development of follicles leading before the CL. The expression of the apoptosis-related genes Fas and Fas-L increased in the experimental group. In addition, the expression of the inflammation-related genes increased in the experimental group. In this study, we confirmed that LPS had detrimental effects on the uterus and ovaries in mice. These results suggest that injection of LPS can cause immune reactions within the uterus and ovaries and cause hormonal changes, which can have adverse effects such as abnormal operation or bleeding of the menstrual cycle. These results are expected to help determine the cause of decreased reproductive function, infertility, or physiological disorders caused by the COVID-19 vaccine.

A report of unrecorded bacterial species of Korea isolated in 2016, belonging to the family Deinococcaceae and Planctomycetaceae

  • In 2016, as part of a larger effort to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea, we isolated the family Deinococcaceae and Planctomycetaceae as unrecorded bacterial species. From the high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (>98.5%) and formation of a robust phylogenetic clade with known species, it was determined that each strain was a distinct bacterial species. There are no official reports that these two species have been described in Korea; therefore, the bacterial strains of Deinococcus and Blastopirellula are described for the first time in Korea. Gram reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, and isolation sources are also described in the species description section.

Isolation and characterization of two unrecorded yeast species in the phylum Basidiomycota

  • The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil samples collected in Seoul and Daejeon, Republic of Korea. To identify wild yeast strains, pairwise sequence comparisons of D1/D2 region of the 26S rRNA gene sequence were done using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The cell morphologies were observed by phase contrast microscope and carbon source assimilation test were done using API 20C AUX kit. Among the 13 isolated strains, 11 strains were previously reported, but two strains have never been reported from Republic of Korea. The 13 strains were assigned to the phylum Basidiomycota. The two unrecorded yeast strains B2UV-201 and DJ1-5-B-10C belong to the genera Rhodotorula and Rhodosporidiobolus, respectively. The two unrecorded yeast strains are oval shaped and polar budding cells. This research focuses on the morphological and biochemical properties of the two unreported yeast species that have not officially been reported in Korea.

Expression of Nesfatin-1/NUCB2 and Its Binding Site in Mouse Testis and Epididymis

  • Nesfatin-1/NUCB2, which is secreted from the brain, is known to control appetite and energy metabolism. Recent studies have been shown that nesfatin-1/NUCB2 was expressed not only in the brain, but it was also expressed in the gastric organs and adipose tissue. However, little is known about the expression of nesfatin-1/NUCB2 in the male reproductive system. Therefore, we examined whether the nesfatin-1/NUCB2 and its binding site exists in the male reproductive organs. Nesfatin-1/NUCB2 mRNA and protein were detected in the mouse testis and epididymis by PCR and Western blot analysis. As a result of the immunohistochemistry staining, the nesfatin-1 protein was localized at the interstitial cells and Leydig cells in the testis. Nesfatin-1 binding sites were also displayed at boundary cells in the tunica albuginea. Furthermore, in order to examine if the expression of nesfatin-1/NUCB2 mRNA in the testis and epididymis were affected by gonadotropin, its mRNA expression was analyzed after PMSG administration into mice. NUCB2 mRNA expression levels were increased in both of the testis and epididymis after PMSG administration. These results demonstrated for the first time that nesfatin-1 and its binding site were expressed in the mouse testis and epididymis. In addition, nesfatin-1/NUCB2 mRNA expression was controlled by gonadotropin, suggesting a possible role of nesfatin-1 in the male reproductive organs as a local regulator. Due to this, further study is needed to elucidate the functions of nesfatin-1 on the male reproductive system.
