The cbb3 cytochrome c oxidase has the dual function as a terminal oxidase and oxygen sensor in the photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodobacter sphaeroides. The cbb3 oxidase forms a signal transduction pathway together with the PrrBA two-component system that controls photosynthesis gene expression in response to changes in oxygen tension in the environment. Under aerobic conditions the cbb3 oxidase generates an inhibitory signal, which shifts the equilibrium of PrrB kinase/phosphatase activities towards the phosphatase mode. Photosynthesis genes are thereby turned off under aerobic conditions. The catalytic subunit (CcoN) of the R. sphaeroides cbb3 oxidase contains five histidine residues (H2l4, B233, H303, H320, and H444) that are conserved in all CcoN subunits of the cbb3 oxidase, but not in the catalytic subunits of other members of copper-heme superfamily oxidases. H214A mutation of CcoN affected neither catalytic activity nor sensory (signaling) function of the cbb3 oxidase, whereas H320A mutation led to almost complete loss of both catalytic activity and sensory function of the cbb3 oxidase. H233V and H444A mutations brought about the partial loss of catalytic activity and sensory function of the cbb3 oxidase. Interestingly, the H303A mutant form of the cbb3 oxidase retains the catalytic function as a cytochrome c oxidase as compared to the wild-type oxidase, while it is defective in signaling function as an oxygen sensor. H303 appears to be implicated in either signal sensing or generation of the inhibitory signal to the PrrBA two-component system.
This study examined the correlation between a handle evaluation of cosmetic puff textile and a sensory evaluation. The KES-F system was used to analyze the main mechanical factors for the handle evaluation and a statistical method was used for the sensory evaluation. The results revealed different mechanical properties and handle values of the tested cosmetic puff textiles. A material type and structure of the cosmetic textile affected the handle property of the material which is the most important factor for a cosmetic purpose. Particularly, the physical properties of textile material are likely to be important factors for the sensory property of cosmetic material. In addition, the sensory evaluation also revealed different sensory characteristics of the cosmetic efficiency according to the cosmetic puff textile. No close relationship was observed between the mechanical properties and sensory evaluation on the cosmetic puff textiles. The sensory evaluation of a cosmetic efficiency is not only decided by the physical and mechanical characteristics of the cosmetic textile material. Overall, when using textiles used for the cosmetic purposes, it is important to consider not only the proper mechanical properties of the textiles but also the use and sensory satisfaction. Development and selection of the cosmetic textiles should be focused on both the material function and consumer satisfaction.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference and relationship between sensory processing abilities, gross motor and fine motor capabilities in children with cerebral palsy. METHODS: 104 children with cerebral palsy participated in the study. Sensory processing abilities of the subjects were measured by Short Sensory Profile (SSP). Gross and fine motor abilities were each measured using the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and Manual Ability Classification System (MACS), respectively. RESULTS: There were significant correlations between SSP level and GMFCS (R=.72, p<.00) or MACS (R=.77, p<.00) levels. Significant differences were showed each gross motor (p=.01) and fine motor level (p=.00) among sensory processing level of children. In addition, sub-items of sensory processing as Tactile sensitivity, Movement sensitivity, Auditory filtering and Low energy/Weak were significantly were showed significant correlations gross motor and fine motor level (p=.01). Also, multiple regression result was showed that as MACS level and GMFCS level were higher, the SSP total score was higher all of participants (adjusted $R^2=.62$). CONCLUSION: Sensory processing abilities of children with cerebral palsy were related with gross motor and fine motor capabilities. Also gross motor and fine motor capabilities are as higher, the sensory processing skill was well of cerebral palsy.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between sensory function and performances in the activities of daily living in chronic CVA patients. One-hundred and thirty-eight CVA patients, who experienced their CVA more than 6 months ago, were recruited. Their sensory, motor and cognitive functions, as well as performances in activities of daily living were assessed and analysed. The results indicated that Graphesthesia and proprioception of the affected hand of patients with right hemiplegia showed statistically significant correlation with personal hygiene. The motor functions of the unaffected side in patients with left hemiplegia showed statistically meaningful correlation with ADL performances. The correlation between the motor function of upper limb of the unaffected side and the activities of daily living showed statistical significance in both right and left hemiplegia.

Photosynthetic microbes possess a wealth of photoactive proteins including chlorophyll-based pigments, phototropin-related blue light receptors, phytochromes, and cryptochromes. Surprisingly, recent genome sequencing projects discovered additional photoactive proteins, retinal-based rhodopsins, in cyanobacterial and algal genera. Most of these newly found rhodopsin genes and retinal synthase have not been expressed and their functions are unknown. Analysis of the Anabaena and Chlamyrhodopsin with retinal synthase revealed that they have sensory functions, which, based on our work with haloarchaeal rhodopsins, may use a variety of signaling mechanisms. Anabaena rhodopsin is believed to be sensory, shown to interact with a soluble transducer and the putative function is either chromatic adaptation or circadian rhythm. Chlamydomonas rhodopsins are involved in phototaxis and photophobic responses based on electrical measurements by RNAi experiment. In order to analyze the protein, we developed a sensory rhodopsin expression system in E. coli. The opsin in E. coil bound endogenous all-trans retinal to form a pigment and can be observed on the plate. Using this system we could identify retinal synthase in Anabaena PCC 7120. We conclude that Anabaena D475 dioxygenase functions as a retinal synthase to the Anabaena rhodopsin in the cell.
The fine structural characteristics of the antennal sensory organs of a female millipede, Orthomorphella pekuensis, were observed with field emission scanning electron microscopy. On the surface of the antenna, four basic types of sensory receptor with the function of either mechanical or olfactory reception are identified in this female millipede. Of these, chaetiform sensilla (CS) and trichoid sensilla (TS) are related to mechanical reception, and four large apical cone sensilla (AS) and three subtypes of basiconic sensilla ($BS_1,\;BS_2,\;BS_3$) are likely to function in olfactory reception, as these receptors have porous structure commonly. Although this millipede also possess a number of primary or secondary sexual characters to improve the efficiency of reproduction, we could not observe their prominent sexually dimorphic characters in the antennal sensilla with the exception of minor structural and numerical differences.
In this study, rice candy was produced with mulberry leaf and its effect on the lowering blood glucose level was assessed. The results were as follows: The recovery rate of mulberry leaf powder was 32.7%. The contents of crude protein, lipid, ash and crude fiber of mulberry leaf were 19.54%, 4.82%, 12.80%, and 11.27%, respectively. The sensory evaluation revealed that the rice candy added with 1% mulberry leaf powder showed slightly hi인or palatability score than that of 2%, but we decided that 2% addition of mulberry leaf powder would be preferred over 1% if considering both the physiological function and the sensory acceptability. The blood glucose level after ingesting the rice candy with mulberry leaf lowered by 31%, more than that of control.
The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of a nursing intervention using sensory stimulation in dysphagic patients. Quasi-experimental with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. 15 patients of each group were assigned for this study, who were hospitalized in the oriental medicine hospital of K. University. Specific stimulation plans were devised based on a dysfunctional area of the subjects. For each modality, subjects were systematically stimulated for 30 minutes, in the experimental group prior to each meal and 3 times per day for a week. The data were analyzed by SPSS PC program using $X^2$-test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank test and Mann-Whitney U test. The results of this study are as follows : 1. The tongue control score of the experimental group is greater than that of the control group(u=52.0, p=.007). 2. The score of chewing ability, lip control, swallowing ability of the experimental group is greater than that of the control group. But no difference is statistically seen between the experimental group and control group. Therefore, this study shows that sensory stimulation using icing, quick stretch, etc., was effective in improving or oropharyngeal function in patients with dysphagia.
Purpose: This study was to identify the effects of oropharyngeal sensory stimulation on a functional oral intake scale, ore-pharyngeal swallowing functions, and aspiration pneumonia symptoms with nasogastric tube insertion in stroke patients. Method: This study was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The subjects or the study were 32 patients who were hospitalized in Kosin Gaspel hospital. The experimental subjects were stimulated for $10{\sim}20$ minutes, 1 time per day. The intervention was implemented for 2 weeks. Result: Participants in the experimental group significantly received a higher score in ore-pharyngeal swallowing function than those in the control group. However the participants in the experimental group only got a high score in the function oralintake scale which doesn't imply a statistical significance. In addition, they didn't geta remarkably higher score in aspiration pneumonia symptoms than those in the control group. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that oropharyngeal sensory stimulation is effective in promoting recovery oro-pharyngeal swallowing function of nasogastric tube insertions in stroke patients.
In this study, oral sensory function in the osseointegrated root form implant-supported prostheses wearers was estimated by measuring occlusal tactile perception threshold of thickness and sensibility threshold against lateral static loading, and comparing with normal dentition subjects and complete denture wearers group. Osseointegrated root form implants seemed to be restored in the sensation to some extent, and so, dental implants restored edentulous patients in a wide meaning. Conclusions were summarized as following. 1. Occlusal tactile perception threshold of thickness was highest in complete denture wearers group, following by implant-supported prostheses wearers group, normal dentition subjects group. 2. In the implant-supported prostheses wearers group, occlusal tactile perception threshold of opposing artificial teeth case was higher than of opposing natural or opposing implantsupported teeth case. 3. Sensibility threshold against lateral loading of complete denture wearers and implantsupported prostheses wearers group was higher than that of normal dentition subject group. 4. In the implant-supported prostheses group, sensibility threshold against lateral loading was not significantly different between upper and lower jaws. 5. In occlusal tactile perception threshold of thickness and sensibility threshold against lateral loading test, there was no regularity among values of each tooth, and no significant difference between anterior and posterior teeth as well.
